There’s nothing about the first one that gives me an inclination...

to see this one. I’ll have to wait and find out if this one’s any better. UA reviews and buzz. I love the idea of the flying sequences, but if it’s anywhere near as cheesy and unrealistic as the first one, I’ll pass.

Matt M. : 7/18/2019 5:34 pm : link
It didn't make me want to run out and see it any more. I knew going in I'm going to see it because the original was one of my favorite movies of the 80s. The trailer didn't make me feel all that nostalgic, but it also didn't make me not want to see it. It also didn't seem to be the story I expected, with Maverick being a Top Gun instructor or running the school. It's odd that he seems to still be an active fighter pilot at 55. For someone like that to still be a Captain he must really fuck up repeatedly. Why stay active then?
My guess is that

I thought the same. I guess we'll have to see the movie and find out. This movie has suck all over it, but I don't care one bit.

Reminds me of the feature I saw in I think NYTimes in the early days of the uprising in Syria. They speculated that Assad would be quickly dispatched, showing the few dozen choppers and jets that the Syrian air force still had access to. It painted a picture of the air force's ineptitude, keeping their sanctions ravaged aircraft in the sky only with popsicle sticks and duct tape.
Well, they've proven just effective enough.

I'm not saying your analysis is bad. Only that it reminds me of a bad analysis I remember seeing.
Anyway, we're talking about TopGunMaverick.

Didn't you see the first one? It's in Pete Mitchell's blood. Lol. Actually that's what Harris' whole first bit is about. "It's one of life's mysteries, sir."

Also as I said b4 I feel like it might suck b/c of nostalgia (jacket, sunset volleyball / football, piano scenes). I find myself asking how many of the things below will be said or happen:

1. Tower Buzz
2. I'm gonna hit the brakes, he'll fly right by
3. Never leaving your wingman, if only to teach to someone else
4. "We were communicating. You know, giving him the bird?"
5. Has to mention Goose. Has to. HAS TO. Maybe via Meg Ryan cameo, if not a vague reference

The guy is riding the SAME DAMN MOTORCYCLE almost 35 yrs later. I mean, Craigslist must have something newer, better, affordable, no?

I read Miles Teller is playing Goose's son, for that reference.

Look, I loved the original and of course Maverick the character. I get that it is who that character was for most of the movie. But, that movie ended with the impression he may have developed a little and was considering being an instructor.

There's many ways you can go from there to get him back to an active fighter pilot (maybe test pilot?). But, someone would have to try really hard to be stuck the way they depict this character. Would he really stick it out for 30 years like that?

Tom Cruise demanding that every sailor on the ship not look at him? I find myself questioning the veracity of this account. Cruise is a lunatic, but he is almost universally considered a nice guy to people with whom he interacts around film sets.

According to this it may have been nothing more than some servicemen misinterpreting instructions for behavior on the set.

Quote:
UPDATE: US Navy officials responded to accusations of Tom Cruise’s alleged arrogance on set of Top Gun 2 and denied the claims.

“Tom Cruise and the cast were nothing but gracious and professional during filming to all of the sailors.”

A crew member who asked to remain anonymous previously told NBC 7 that Tom Cruise had allegedly asked servicemembers on USS Theodore Roosevelt not to look at him or touch him either. He said:

“He angered USS Theodore crew while filming [the ‘Top Gun’ sequel]”.

The crew member also said that Cruise’s behavior was:

“Very arrogant.”

The Navy official explained that “some sailors may have misinterpreted guidance from the Navy that told sailors to not approach actors while filming and not use cell phones on the set.”

The Navy official also assured that it “does not tolerate any disrespect to its members” and “wouldn’t allow” staff to be mistreated

ChaChing : 7/18/2019 11:45 pm : link
but I wondered if it might have had something to do with misunderstanding either when they were on set, when he was prepping to go shoot, or even IF he was trying to remain 'in character' while on the boat (meaning, no stopping to sign autographs, or say hello, just business as if he were a sailor)

Again I'm just guessing but wouldn't be surprised this type of thing happens

The original is a great guy movie
Csonka : 7/19/2019 9:45 am : link
I can't comprehend why a guy born in 1965 would avoid this movie his whole life.

As for the homoerotic thoughts ... whoever came up with that just has some things he's trying to work out for himself. Athletic guys at a beach do play beach volleyball without their shirts. Yeah, they're good looking guys. Some eye candy for the girls to swoon over in the slow motion scenes.

But it's only gay if that thought's already in your subconscious.
This is a thing that's kinda followed the movie.
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/19/2019 9:58 am : link
Quentin Tarantino had a whole scene debating the homoeroticism in Top Gun in 'Sleep With Me'.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7IgwDqJhno

Writers have taken it as a talking point
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/thinking-man/how-did-top-gun-become-so-gay/

https://consequenceofsound.net/2016/05/top-gun-and-the-end-of-the-homoerotic-action-movie/

Legitimate film critics have seen it that way, and even the movie's co-writer admits it can be taken that way.

Quote:
But is there more to it? Legendary US film critic Pauline Kael wrote in her review at the time, “the movie is a shiny homoerotic commercial: the pilots strut around the locker room, towels hanging precariously from their waists.”

And the camera certainly gazes longingly as the actors’ ripped bodies – the hilarious topless volleyball game (never mind the locker room scenes) is proof enough of that.

“We didn’t write it as that,” Jack Epps Jr, the movie’s co-writer, tells Yahoo. “[But] I see how you can interpret it that way.”

https://uk.movies.yahoo.com/top-gun-is-it-really-gay-134449518.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAEVR5bbmT34_d78WFk6Zzjls6dLmyVmc--xhM1TCuDKYKkhjNF3h8utZIUIGj0LIjYPQ0um_TMXDmDHRhWsJVS4k-QjfPSy2xp4ByASd_t45q9t3Iv_3jICdYHMbmBH7NS-LiRg0LkxG-8G5eLHcGfcErXDWwKftO5-FJmbIlj3J

And SNL has hit on it a few times, so it's not totally unheard of.

Outside of the volleyball scene, that too because the song
ChaChing : 7/19/2019 7:31 pm : link
"Playin w/ the Boys" (ignoring the next scene is a date w/ the chick but well), this is nonsense

Dudes in a locker room is homoerotic? Real pro athletes smack each other's asses. Making jokes about hard ons? Even Archer or Family Guy do (like most regular guys). Actually it was sedate since they aren't wrestling, towel snapping, just talking...about flying if context matters

Not to mention every dude was in a relationship, chasing tail, even jokes about f-ing on the women's room counter, "take me to be or lose me forever." All that was homoerotic? That's a TON of movie time that completely contradicts the narrative really

Funniest part I know this gossip has been around for ages, how come there's never a mention of it being 'for the ladies?' A big name Hollywood movie, w/ a bunch of pretty boys in uniform? Esp in the 80s? Are they not half the market?

Doesn't bother me, I just find people's judgments so off base so often. Seems like nonsense or homophobia to me
Both stars are gay too...

One of things I’ve always thought about the, there’s zero chemistry between Cruise and McGillis. Anyway, if you watch the movie today, with the gay thing in mind, it’ll make the movie more interesting.
Totally agree.
redwhiteandbigblue : 7/19/2019 10:32 pm : link
The fact that this movie has a gay undertone to some is hilarious. All of the points made about chasing women, flyover the admirals daughter, Meg Ryan saying Maverick gets all the girls,etc.etc.how in the he'll does this get twisted to be a movie with gay undertones. If anything, everything about the movie is spelled TESTOSTERONE.

distracted me right away that Cruise was flying without his flight gloves. That's a pretty big technical mistake. The rest of the movie is a complete stretch, because it took too long to make it to fit a 'real' storyline. There are zero 55 year old Navy Captains flying anything... and very few (if any) on active duty. Also, the high altitude (space suit) indicates he's flying something akin to the U2/SR-71. I'm interested to see how he transitions from the F/A-18 to something the Navy doesn't fly. Since this isn't a documentary, I'm going to try to watch and enjoy the story.

Good post. Cruise looks good for 55. I’m 53 and still train w a lot of guys half my age. The drop in my performance from even 45 to know is what it is. Never mind all the minor injuries I keep getting is a reminder of the aging process. That the premise is he’s still flying is just silly. Zero chance there’s a 55 year old fighter pilot who is physically or mentally capable. Zero

This is a nostalgia money grab. Which is fine IMO. People want to see it and good for them. Don’t think I will but it jumped out at me right away the he was still flying was pretty funny.

This is pretty funny because homoerotic humor and banter are pretty prevalent in the military, even in the hardcore special operations community.

Due respect guys, you’re not wrong per se, but if realism is going to make or break the movie for you, you’re probably not going to like it.

Of course it’s silly, it’s a Tom Cruise vehicle with I’m sure a healthy dose of testosterone, forced nostalgia, silly one liners, a bad love story, lots of cool action sequences enhanced by modern special effects. and no doubt a good measure of the homoeroticism some guys seem to have a sharp radar for.

Realistic portrayal of military operations and how air combat works may be in short supply, however.
