The cast is all very like-able. Miles Teller plays Goose's grown-up son. It looks like the flight scenes will pretty intense. Even if its's somewhat cheesy it should still be entertaining.
it seems more like they are just rehashing half the scenes & now have an excuse to reuse the props & consumes from back then. I 2 min we see his jacket, the bike, a piano bar scene, even a shot of spinning a volleyball football in the sunset
Tho yeah, even back then it was clearly a theater movie for the combat, flying...that part looks pretty cool
Just bring 'em all back lol. Esp Ironside, for the voice alone
prop bet, does the new 'iceman' do the in your face bite?
What acting. What a movie
Val Kilmer will be in it but probably just a cameo. He had a long battle with throat cancer that changed his voice quite a bit. There were reports that he was doing a lot better recently though.

Good to hear he's improved. Didn't know that, thanks
in Iron Eagle 37. And plan a foreign attack at Slappy's blues bar w/ the pepperoni & olives on his salad
As Spencer Davis Group wails through "Gimme Some Lovin"
I can't agree that Tom Cruise doesn't make bad movies. I will say, however, that Tom Cruise never mails in a performance. He never goes through the motions. You cast Tom Cruise in a movie, you will get TOM CRUISE in your movie. I admire his ability to throw himself 100% into even silly movies.

The only guy at Top Gun who had the guts to stand up to Maverick and get under that skittish midget's skin. Without him, Maverick never bottoms out, doesn't get back in the game, and we'd all be speaking Russian now.
RE: Also funny I was wondering even in the orignal Â
iirc there was a general sense that air combat was a dying art, few had the experience. Now of course w/ drones it actually much less you'd think...
The line here was "only man to shoot down 3 planes in FORTY yrs." I feel like they should have gone w/ a bit more hyperbole there haha
I think they're going with more realism on this one; hence, them saying three planes is pretty dramatic since we haven't fought a sustained air to air warfare since the Korean War.
And there is currently no drone that can conduct air to air combat. Only drones capable of any form of offensive capabilities are all air to ground. We still need a tons of fighter pilots since retention in that community sucks.

Fair enough, I know nothing on this so it's appreciated. I was hoping it would be more realistic, than 'fast & furious' or something
Any idea what fighters they fly? Tho they are not new (nor Navy?) I always wanted to see planes w/ the tech & mobility of raptors (for example) in a more realistic style movie. Obviously there must be much better tech now, but still

From what I can see, they were flying initially the F/A-18F Super Hornets, which is still the premiere fighter in the Navy since the F-35 has been a disaster. However, Cruise wearing some kind of a high altitude suit looks like he's testing some other aircraft...who knows, maybe that's part of the story.
than the current movie's F/A-18 Super Hornets, because they were about 350 mph faster and had swing-wings. It was also a two-seater so you had the buddy aspect to add to the movie drama.
Of course the Super Hornet is cool because it is more versatile as it is both a fighter and ground attack plane and as a single-seater, it's just the pilot alone against the enemy. So there's drama in that.
I believe that Tomcats were really expensive to maintain, so they were phased out and eventually replaced by the Hornets.
If they fly over Iran they might meet up with some F-14 Tomcats since the USA sold a bunch of them to Iran.
And they have some trouble keeping them in the air since they haven't been able to get replacement parts via legitimate means since 1979 and for the most part just cannibalized grounded ones. I think I've read they still have 40 in service but at any given time can get maybe 15-20 in the air.
to see this one. I’ll have to wait and find out if this one’s any better. UA reviews and buzz. I love the idea of the flying sequences, but if it’s anywhere near as cheesy and unrealistic as the first one, I’ll pass.
It didn't make me want to run out and see it any more. I knew going in I'm going to see it because the original was one of my favorite movies of the 80s. The trailer didn't make me feel all that nostalgic, but it also didn't make me not want to see it. It also didn't seem to be the story I expected, with Maverick being a Top Gun instructor or running the school. It's odd that he seems to still be an active fighter pilot at 55. For someone like that to still be a Captain he must really fuck up repeatedly. Why stay active then?
he didn't want promotion because he didn't want to leave the cockpit. Similar ideas found in the Star Trek franchise about leaving behind command of a ship.

I thought the same. I guess we'll have to see the movie and find out. This movie has suck all over it, but I don't care one bit.

Reminds me of the feature I saw in I think NYTimes in the early days of the uprising in Syria. They speculated that Assad would be quickly dispatched, showing the few dozen choppers and jets that the Syrian air force still had access to. It painted a picture of the air force's ineptitude, keeping their sanctions ravaged aircraft in the sky only with popsicle sticks and duct tape.
Well, they've proven just effective enough.
I'm not saying your analysis is bad. Only that it reminds me of a bad analysis I remember seeing.
Anyway, we're talking about TopGunMaverick.

Didn't you see the first one? It's in Pete Mitchell's blood. Lol. Actually that's what Harris' whole first bit is about. "It's one of life's mysteries, sir."
Also as I said b4 I feel like it might suck b/c of nostalgia (jacket, sunset volleyball / football, piano scenes). I find myself asking how many of the things below will be said or happen:
1. Tower Buzz
2. I'm gonna hit the brakes, he'll fly right by
3. Never leaving your wingman, if only to teach to someone else
4. "We were communicating. You know, giving him the bird?"
5. Has to mention Goose. Has to. HAS TO. Maybe via Meg Ryan cameo, if not a vague reference
The guy is riding the SAME DAMN MOTORCYCLE almost 35 yrs later. I mean, Craigslist must have something newer, better, affordable, no?

I read Miles Teller is playing Goose's son, for that reference.
Look, I loved the original and of course Maverick the character. I get that it is who that character was for most of the movie. But, that movie ended with the impression he may have developed a little and was considering being an instructor.
There's many ways you can go from there to get him back to an active fighter pilot (maybe test pilot?). But, someone would have to try really hard to be stuck the way they depict this character. Would he really stick it out for 30 years like that?
nor how bad this one will likely be
I def prefer Connolly to McGills. For obvious reasons

yes, obviously joking. Freaking all these dudes look of course look plenty old
Otherwise I'd be asking for the bald commander / principal from Back to the Future too

+2. Best wishes to him.
James Tolkan! I actually looked it up, he's older than Skerritt but only by 3 years, 88 vs 85.
Marty McFly was right, he never was young. Serpico came out in 1973 and he looked identical in that one to how he looked in BTTF.

Kilmer is in it. He's in rough shape due to the throat cancer.

Damn you! I wanted to "rubber dog shit" this thread!
