So what are your expectations going into this season?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 7/18/2019 6:13 pm
Playoffs? 6-7ish wins? Eli's last stand? The beginning of the Jones era?

I'm not sure how I feel, but this season should be interesting, if nothing else.

I have an odd feeling that 9-7 or 10-6 with a wildcard is coming
Bockman : 7/18/2019 6:17 pm : link
I don't think our division is that good and I think we're a better team than last year. Not a "good" team, but better.
Schedule for NFC East is on the easier side....
George from PA : 7/18/2019 6:19 pm : link
So I expect more wins then others might, but so will the Cowboys and Eagles.

So making playoff, will be tough ...unless, we figure out how to beat those guys.
Maybe 5 wins

probably 3 or 4.
This season reminds me of the 2007 season
Captplanet : 7/18/2019 6:29 pm : link
going into training camp, the Giants best player(Tiki) had recently retired(Beckham trade). There was no faith in the coaching staff, QB, GM.... New DC with a bunch of new players. There were so many moving parts and changes that it was tough to say what would happen. I was excited about the season, but I knew if Coughlin had a bad season, the giants would be looking at a total rebuild(Jones era begins). New offensive focus, since Tiki was gone.

So if this offense plays better without Beckham, and the new Def players gel quickly. I'm not saying this team is going to the Superbowl, but if everything falls into place, I can see them going 10-6... If not then, I could see them going 6-10.

I'm in a horrific sports team rut! These past three seasons have just been so bad for my favorite 3 sports teams;
Giant seasons have typically been over by Halloween
Met seasons have been over by Memorial Day
Ranger seasons have been over by MLK day
so right now I'm suffering from losers attitude! Until something good actually happens to one of my teams, I have ZERO faith! I really have no clue what the expectations are but they are quite low. Low enough that I'm not even getting the NFL ticket this year.

Hopefully I'll be surprised and the rut will be over!!
Last place schedule?
madgiantscow009 : 7/18/2019 6:34 pm : link
I'd rather play the schedule at full strength so there are no excuses.

Barkley is a better player to than OBJ. Somehow the Pats. An win without an diva whiny WR. 6-10 to 10-6. Injuries and breaks.

arcarsenal : 7/18/2019 6:58 pm : link
I just want to see a better football team. Less bullshit.

To me, 2020 has always been the spot where I think - depending on our QB situation - the roster should be good enough to really compete for the NFCE.

We're not quite there yet. But, there are ways this team could arrive a little early and surprise people.

But we need to learn about Jones and the only way I'm okay with him not starting is if Eli is winning. And by winning, I don't mean win one, lose one, win one, lose one all year long. We need to be productive on offense and he needs to be playing a part in that.

If he's not, Jones has to be in there. Not when we're "mathematically out"

I want to see Giants football and be a tough team to play against.

Predicting a record just feels pointless because of all the variables that pop up throughout the season. It's throwing a dart blindfolded. But I think this team is going in a better direction now.

If we're still kicking around and are in the mix come December, I'll be satisfied.
4-6 wins

I could see it being either better or worse.
Me thinks Bettcher and the defense hold the keys.
Spider56 : 7/18/2019 7:02 pm : link
The offense is going to control the clock and score but the new guys on the defense need to grow together and grow up fast. I think 8-9 wins is a reasonable expectation, maybe 10 at best.
5-7 wins
Nine-Tails : 7/18/2019 7:05 pm : link
I think the team is gonna start slow out the gates, with Jones coming in later in the year. This will energize the team and see a nice second half run.
Not even bothering making expectations for wins.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 7/18/2019 7:08 pm : link
I expect the defense to be better, but how could it not when they couldn't cover anyone last season due to lack of talent in secondary?

As for the offense, I'm extremely skeptical of the whole "Eli had a good last 4 games without Odell" talking point. I need to see if the Giants can run the ball better when everyone expects them to and if Eli can produce against teams that pay little respect to the passing game.

Honestly, I'm just hoping the positives about Daniel Jones continue and we all feel good about him going into next offseason.
I want to see
dep026 : 7/18/2019 7:14 pm : link
Hill, Carter, Peppers, Baker, Lawrence to show they can be legit players.

I want Shepard to take a big step forward and Engram to be a top 3 receiving TE. I want Barkley to improve and for the OL to Ben legit.

If those things happen... I dont care if we win 0 or the SB. Because thats a successful season.
Six Wins
looie : 7/18/2019 7:22 pm : link
Too many new faces. Will take a long while for things to jell. 2nd half (4-4) will be better than 1st 2-6). Next year, perhaps a wild card.

^This, although I'm slightly more optimistic, so I'll say 7-8 wins.
7 to 9 wins

and maybe a playoff berth, but no farther. Overall a tentative start, but the team gains momentum as it comes together during the season.

Eli starts all year, puts up good numbers, and we only see Jones in a mop-up role, if at all. The OL is much improved. Barkley cements his position as one of the most dynamic offensive threats in the league. Tate has a big year. So do Engram and Sterling Shepard. And somebody else steps up and does a good job as the 3rd WR. Somebody important gets hurt, but somebody else will play well enough to keep it from being a major disaster. One of the rookies really surprises in a good way. But red zone / goal line problems remain and an excessive number of turn-overs cost them at least one game.

The defense starts slow but improves each week, and by the end of the season is playing pretty well in general. Some of the young guys and newcomers step up as pass rushers, but somebody else that they are counting on either gets hurt or is a big bust, and their overall pass rush remains average at best. The run defense continues erratic, and somebody runs the ball down their throat all day costing them a game that they should have won. The DBs, particularly Peppers, are better than most believe they will be, but an early mistake or two will cost them big. The LBs remain a serious weakness in both coverage and run stopping, and that does cost them a game or two.

Special teams are generally a strength, but they don't win any games due to them.

Coaching is solid but don't expect anything really brilliant like you'd occasionally see from Tuna or Little Bill.

And the zebras cost them a game somewhere somehow as NFL officiating continues to be inconsistent and pretty slipshod.

I don't even think about it until I watch the preseason games

scenario as 2004. Eli will start and the Giants schedule is not that hard out the gate. I think the Giants will start off "quick" for them recently, ie- they will go 2-1 or 3-1. But then they will start to stumble. And with a short leash on Eli for the first time in his career, I think the Giants will pull the plug on him and put Jones in at QB sometime after the Patriots game.

Jones will look like a rookie, up/down and by later in the season, will show promise ahead of 2020. All in all, I see them at 6-10 or 7-9.
We are the team that everyone has penciled in as a win
justafan : 7/18/2019 9:24 pm : link
Just remember that. Of course, teams surprise every year. Looking at the schedule though I see this:

@Cowboys: L 0-1
Bills: W 1-1
@Tampa: W 2-1
Wash: W 3-1
Vikes: W 4-1
@Pats: L 4-2
Cards: W 5-2
@Lions: L 5-3
Dallas: W 6-3
@Jets: L 6-4

BYE: Here is where the wheels come off after a dumb loss to the Jets, BBI implodes as the Giants had 2 weeks to prepare for Chicago and lose again. Followed up by a loss to a resurgent Packers and since we can't beat Philly, the flogging continues.

@Bears: L 6-5
Pack: L 6-6
@Philly: L 6-7

Daniel Jones Era begins: Below 500% and all but eliminated from the playoffs the Giants decide to give Jones the start at home and let him finish the season. He manages the game to victor but the Giants close out the season with losses in the division.

Miami: W 7-7
@Wash: L 7-8
Philly: L 7-9

We improve wins by a bit, defense makes some steps forward, and the offense looks better with an improved offensive line. However, the Giants lack of QB pressure and an aging QB cost them a few wins that would have put them in the dance.
we dont have much depth
djm : 7/18/2019 10:30 pm : link
But then again most teams lack depth. One thing weve seen is when the OL doesnt block and theres no running game, Eli is in trouble, which means the offense would be in trouble. As last year progressed the OL got a little better along with the running game. Eli and The offense followed suit. I see no reason to think the offense will be worse than last year. I see reasons why it could be even better. Beckham is getting way too much attention. The giants can produce without him now much more so than they could from 14-17. Much better equipped. Hes also been adequately replaced, this doesnt get enough attention. The OL has finally turned a corner both from within and thanks to the addition of Zeitler. Eli is completely overstated, over analyzed and over regurgitated from just about everyone. Hes the least of our worries. Hes a pro. He wont elevate things if they are broken all around him but He also wont hold this offense back. Jones will wait unless the team has a bad record by late October. I dont see it.

The D is young but theres talent. What it lacks is depth and any real LB presence in the middle. I think edge rusher isnt really a problem at all. Carter is a player on the rise. Golden is a pro. Its the other LBs that bother me. Ogletree shouldnt be your best inside LB. Hes ok but thats really all there is. Secondary and DL are so interesting. Fascinating really. As they go.... we shall see. I see a potentially fun team. Usually teams like this need to win a few early get some juice going some karma... why not. Theres talent all over the roster, dont let the lazy writers fool you, but it has to win games first. I think its a better more prepared team than last year this time and the schedule appears to be more manageable. Thats a recipe for more wins.

'So what are your expectations going into this season?'...
Torrag : 7/19/2019 1:30 am : link
Improvement. Both by the players and the coaching staff. As long as we get that I'll be satisfied this season.

This was always going to take three years to field a roster capable of contending for a championship. Reese and Ross left the cupboard bare and a fractured culture. That takes time to repair.
Not much...
trueblueinpw : 7/19/2019 1:54 am : link
More talent than maybe we think. Not sold on the coaching staff, yet. But I think this is going to be an easier team to watch loose. If that makes sense.

And a competitive team
christian : 7/19/2019 3:43 am : link
I'm very low on the offense.

The offensive line wasn't bad at all down the stretch last year, and personally I think it's better but nowhere as good as many think.

I don't think the gap between Zeitler and Brown is as huge as often stated. Zeitler is good, but he's not a great player, and I think Remmers' health is a big wild card.

I think the WR talent is very thin, and Tate and Shepard are extremely similar, slot receivers.

I don't believe Manning was an innocent victim of bad surroundings, I think his arm is not what it once was, and his pocket presence is frankly bad.

Barkley is a great, great player. But last year showed you can have a RB who nearly lead the league in rushing and still be a bad rushing team.
I learned a long time ago to never have any
David B. : 7/19/2019 4:17 am : link
Why bother? They won the last two SBs on years I didn't expect them to -- especially on 07. And on years I expected them to be good, they crumbled.

In some ways, this is the best time of they year because no one is hurt yet, and they haven't disappointed yet.

What I'd LIKE to see is for them to be entertaining, and competitive enough to keep Jones on the bench.

I'd like them to be PRODUCTIVE on offense and hopefully /i]competent[/i] on defense. I hate when they have trouble scoring points (TDs). I'd be fine with them winning a bunch of games 35-30, know that they'll also be losing some similarly.

Above all, I WANT to see Eli play well behind the improved OL. Have a great season, shove it down his critics throats, and earn another year. I don't care how long Jones sits.

But I don't count on anything and have no expectations.

Concerned about wins than draft status in December.

Having the next franchise quarterback on the roster, makes every game meaningful regardless of record, just like Eli s rookie season.

where we're talking about football instead of soap opera drama. so sick of the attention being on behavior rather than performance.

that said I think this team has some good players on it and we should expect more wins than last year. with so many new players we'll see how good this coaching staff is.

sign me up for 8-9 wins this year.
Just Be Competitive Every Week/Development of Young Players
Rong5611 : 7/19/2019 8:11 am : link
Just want them to be competitive and not a door mat. And, I want to have fun watching the games. With a few breaks, they can be .500 this year, I think.

Most importantly, I want our core of young players to gain experience/skill and position ourselves for 2020 (if they are really bad early, Jones needs to play). We will have a ton of cap space to build a roster around them next year. We need to be in position to truly compete for the division next year and take the Cowboys and Eagles down.

This would be a decent season all things considered - likely a best case scenario.

@Cowboys: L 0-1
Bills: W 1-1
@Tampa: L 1-2
Wash: W 2-2
Vikes: L 2-3
@Pats: L 2-4
Cards: W 3-4
@Lions: W 4-4
Dallas: L 4-5
@Jets: L 4-6
@Bears: L 4-7
Pack: W 5-7 (Eli saves his job)
@Philly: L 5-8
Miami: W 6-8 (Does Jones take over at this point? Maybe.)
@Wash: W 7-8
Philly: W 8-8 (Philly sits starters (Wentz), Giants squeak out a win. Eli's last game, carried off the field by the team. Emotional win. Something to build on)

Somewhere between 6-10 and 9-7, depending on

I expect the Jones era to begin
Rudy5757 : 7/19/2019 9:23 am : link
I want to see the Giants go into the season with just 2 QBs. Tanney and Lauletta need to go. Show some faith that Jones is ready and have him as the #2. I will be very disappointed if we carry more than 2 QBs. No one is picking up the other guys so they will be available if needed.

I expect much improved OL play. There is no excuse. With improved OL play I expect that the O will be more consistent which will have a positive impact on the rest of the team. I expect that Engram is more of a focal point of the O. Hopefully he can stay healthy.

On D its all gonna come down to pass rush. I actually think we will be better than last year. Golden is the key, he should be fully healed and be able to put pressure on the QB. We just need pressure. The LBs are same old same old, I think we will continue to struggle against TEs. I am very excited about the secondary. I think we definitely upgraded and will see improvement week in and week out. Peppers will shine and Baker will look great by mid season.

If I had to guess I would say 7-9 and 8-8 and possibly a glimmer of hope for the playoffs. We'll see a lot of great things happen to set up 2020. We have so many young players we are counting on that inconsistency is bound to hold us back a little.
So many negative wildcards, live by SB - die by SB for example
Bob in Newburgh : 7/19/2019 11:07 am : link
Positives - as a group these receivers are better than given credit for. It is really difficult to shut down multiple #2s on the field at the same time. And I consider GT, SS, and EE to be legitimate floor #2 receivers. Throw in SB as a broken tackle TD on a dump waiting to happen, and we can score enough to win.

Realistic possibility that Carter and Golden can each provide low double digit sacks in 2019. I have little doubt that the final back group that Bettcher settles on will be able to cover, so maybe we get off the field with some regularity.

16-0 Baby!

x meadowlander : 7/19/2019 11:22 am : link
...there is a LOT of optimism heading into this season and I believe that at least initially, that offense is going to give defenses fits.

But this team's Achilles heel is depth. As injuries mount, units will invariably fail.

OL first - Tackle and Center - who's comfortable with Wheeler starting? Pulley at Center?

DL is great, until you lose one of the big 3.

And God forbid if Barkley is hurt.

I'll go so far as to say a 4-2 or 5-2 start, but beyond that is anybody's guess.

If they somehow stay healthy, I will say a 10-6 season is quite possible. But I don't bank on health anymore.
I want Eli to have a great last season
Giants in 07 : 7/19/2019 11:34 am : link
But I also want Jones to get some play so we can hit the ground running next season with a legitimate shot at going deep in the playoffs, which I think with another year of roster building is possible.

The first four games decide the season. If they are 1-3 or 0-4, I think Jones has to play the rest of the way

there is a real shitty 10 bottle of red out there. And there are a few real gems in the same range. Equally, not all seasons and records are created equal.

To that, I think we will be the "gem" of a 10 bottle. We will still have a ceiling on us of about 7-8 wins, but there will be enough positive ingredients to the teams's progression that it will provide optimism for the future, provide evidence that the rebuild is taking form.

An improved Lauletta along with Jones motivates the Giants to enter the season with two rookie contract QBs in a cap-friendly maneuver.

Both split time and are not very good, the Giants go 3-13 and DG and Shurmur are fired.

Because cutting Eli again created such a clusterf%ck, Mara engages in another special executive search to help steer the franchise back in the right direction. He ultimately hires a consultant to help lead this search, someone who has a past history with the Giants and success winning superbowls: Jerry Reese.

After conducting his search, Reese decides he is the right candidate for the GM vacancy.
