Getting some buzz over how odd it is. I’ve never seen the original, so I don’t know what to think.

yeah it looks brutal. Seeing Derulo's face cheesing in that cat costume sealed its fate. Just a really bad idea.

that article is one man tearing on everything popular but cheesy in his day. Cats. Michael Bolton. Celestine Prophecy. Red Lobster.
Can anyone give me what it's about

From what I have read it's about Cats picking someone to die and go to their cat heaven?
I never saw Cats
crackerjack465 : 7/19/2019 9:39 am : link
and this doesn't really interest me, but the trailer doesn't look bad.

I mean, this is what Cats is, isn't it? It looks pretty accurate to how the Broadway show looked (from short clips I've seen). What did people expect it to look like?

I bet if you're a fan of the broadway show you'll be into it.

I saw it so long ago, it's tough to remember.

These were my impressions that I can recall:

1) Sets were absolutely incredible
2) Costumes/makeup were pretty incredible
3) The show itself was awful. From what I remember it was a number of short stories about different Cat characters. Really tough to follow, no plot at all.

To be fair, I saw it when I was like 22 years old, not sure how much I could have really appreciated it back then. I wasn't really a broadway show and show tune kinda guy (I went with a girlfriend).

Apparently, they are based on some famous poems?

Honestly, I thought the trailer looked pretty good. People that don't know the show probably are baffled by the makeup is my take.

This. It's a movie about people singing and dancing while dressed like cats which is based on a play about people singing and dancing while dressed like cats. What did they expect? Black Panther?

The response has become cliche because it's true. People need to stop going. Though a high-profile adaptation of a Broadway musical is a little different than remakes and reboots, to be fair.

Why is it so critically acclaimed then?
I had to take a bunch of clients to it back in the day

It was magical and awful at the same time. Pretty much consistent with all if Andrew Llyod Webers music. Soaring overplayed stuff that you either liked or hated. Too much for me. Especially Phantom of the Opera. But a lot of people lived it.

Book of Mormon was brilliant- but that is more a parody of the genre.
I would actually go see that.

I like the 1970 album version of Jesus Christ Superstar too. But I generally hate the musical genre.

Dan in the Springs : 7/19/2019 12:19 pm : link
took them to CATS when they were young - the whole live production was amazing for my young girls. Of course we bought a DVD of one of the performances and they watched it ad nauseum.

The music is good, but I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea. For people who didn't like the Broadway production, no surprise - you probably wouldn't enjoy this either.

Having said that, it looks pretty good if you did like it. I know my family will be stoked to see this since it's been like 15 years or so since we last watched it together.

There are plenty of great musicals, but most of them are older classics.

That said, even though I've ragged on most current films, I thought they did a good job with "The Greatest Showman."
If my hatred of musicals makes me dumb

whatever there was a plot was good enough, but indeed it was more of a spectacle. There's themes of loss and redemption. There's good characters and evil characters. It hangs together enough for a youngster.

I tried to show my wife the old recording on Amazon Prime a few months ago, and we didn't make it 30-minutes.

How can you generalize that? To my mind some of the all time great musicals rank with any other form of performing art. West Side Story and Porgy and Bess (OKAY, the latter is really an opera) and light operettas from Gilbert and Sullivan were all tremendous forms of entertainment. MY daughters at about age 10 were crazy about The Lion King and other B'way shows when they saw them. More recently as a teen my older daughter loved All That Jazz.

Hey when I was a teen I thought Opera sucked, but I've changed my tune on that...

Soon I will be taking my gals to a summer rep show of "The Producers" which I saw on B'way as a kid (and don't remember except I thought it was funny) and thought the movie was prolly Mel Brooks finest achievement.

I'm looking forward to it like all heck, even without Zero Mostel or Gene Wilder.

I have seen a lot of musicals and have only enjoyed a handful of them. They're just generally not for me. The one exception is Hadestown. I loved that. But most of the others that I've seen that seen are a hard pass.

Wicked was a tremendous show for my kids, my wife and me.

But yeah it's not everyone's cup of tea.

About half of Shakespeare's plays I find unwatchable, and I studied literature once upon a time.

But I don't trash the Bard for that. He had a living to make, too.
