NYP Q& A with Bob Papa on the 2019 New York Giants

Bob Papa: Why this Giants team is different - ( New Window )
Giants seem to be moving in the right direction...
M.S. : 7/19/2019 9:15 am : link

...and it would be really nice to see a competitive football team week-in and week-out.

As for wins in 2019?

Who knows?

But it's conceivable the Giants record looks similar to last season's, but that doesn't mean they are moving in the wrong direction.

Q: What is the biggest reason for optimism this season?

A: The biggest factor is they added [Kevin] Zeitler at right guard, they added to the offensive line and they don’t have the cast of characters they had last year in front of Eli. If this line rebuild meets the expectation level — not being great, just functioning — I think Eli Manning can function at a very high level.

Yea this makes me feel pretty good. Bob has seen is all for 30 years

here. I think this year we should be competitive most weeks, I just don't see enough talent for more than 6 wins or so. I'd love to be wrong and teams do surprise so we'll see.

Talent for 6 wins? We won 5 last year and at least 3 games literally could have gone either way. Hell the Panthers had to beat us with a 60+ yard FG.

Giants are going to be competitive this year.
I like what Gettleman and Shurmur are doing, but this is the time for

optimistic predictions for every team and they don't mean much. This team may surprise and may have a winning record or make the playoffs. But, we're in what looks to be the 2nd year of a 3 year rebuild. So if we don't have a great year, I'm not going to be one of the many bbi moaners.
We have the engine

In Barkley and a revamped OL, we have some work still on defense in terms of pass rush and middle of the field coverage. Upside is that Golden reverts to pre injury form, Carter takes off and Ximines finds his NFL feet. Bethea and Peppers shore up the middle and the young CBs find their way. If so, the defense can surprise but it's the teams with the fewer ifs that generally win more than they lose. We have a ton of ifs but it's better than a team of nots as we've had recently. I expect a tougher more physically imposing team than we have seen in years.
Love listening to Bob Papa

He’s never a homer and always insightful and fair. He made some very interesting comments here
joey in VA says it exactly right, too many “ifs” on this improved team
plato : 7/20/2019 6:44 pm : link
and teams with “ifs”don’t always have them answered positively. But it’s a much improved team than recent giant teams of “nots”.

the real problem is that the head of this team, the qb, has an extremely limited life span. the key question is when do we change the head? not this year, but who heads the team for two, three or more years. When does the change occur, in the middle of this season, after this season, in two years, or less. this is the critical question that the franchise is resting on. must have great timing, decision making and skill. lots depend on this crucial move.

Very well put Joey. You don't address them, but I think Tomlinson, Hill and Lawrence can actually be dominant up front, and Macintosh and Pierre might provide key relief minutes and even some pass rush on top of the big 3.

About a month ago, Tomlinson used that exact term, that the Giants' DL group of him, Hill and Lawrence can be "dominant", and he was really looking forward to play alongside of Lawrence. DT doesn't strike me as the type of dude to talk hype either.

But a lot of IFs re Golden and Carter and Xman. Not to mention the love affair with Tae Davis as a starting LB as the "moneybacker." Tae Davis? Really?

Basically all you said plus perhaps real gold level play at DL/DT.

Hmm...could any of the 5 wins gone either way?
