NFT: Jonah Keri arrested on domestic abuse charges

DanMetroMan : 7/19/2019 12:05 pm
Well-known sportswriter Jonah Keri was granted bail Friday following an alleged assault on his wife.

Keri faces four charges including three counts of assault causing bodily harm and uttering death threats.

He was detained Thursday after being arrested at the couple’s Montreal-area home.

Keri was handcuffed and wearing a green sweatshirt when he appeared in court Friday and was granted bail.

As part of his bail conditions he cannot be within 250 metres of his wife and cannot carry weapons, and was given ten days to get his possessions out of his home.

Court documents state the alleged attacks against Keri's wife took place in July 2018, May 2019, and July 2019.

Well-known?? The guy almost exclusively covers Montreal information.
Seems like the allegation is a pattern of abuse

to see how certain writers react to this, given their views on how players charged with similar offenses should be dealt with.
Maybe we were meant to take this tweet literally...

When it comes to domestic disputes, there is no reason to beleive the man or the woman.

I believe the woman. Especially when he was detained.
Support women (& men), take their allegations seriously...

but at least in this country we are innocent until proven guilty
DV courts are the epitome of patriarchal
WideRight : 7/19/2019 3:16 pm : link
They were created to protect innocent women and children in a patriarchal society where men used to just fuck them over at will, because they were dependant and vulnerable.

The courts acheived tremendous success in their mission, creating a whole set of unique (ex parte, etc.) procedures that accomodate heresay and allegation in lieu of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. This in turn has only re-inforced their model in which it is implicit that the male is the transgressor. So today, women get away with some horrendous shit in DV courts, and the many of them know it and exploit it.

So basically they have become Kangaroo courts, and women have lots of reasons to lie, becuase they have so much to gain.

Lets see how bad Jonah really is. I bet he's a whimp whose wife triggered him, but that's just me.
So if he beat his wife of his own volition
Oscar : 7/19/2019 3:26 pm : link
That would make him more bad or hard or something? What?

Also Keri is a very well known baseball writer who has worked for huge publications for years. He's not Peter Gammons but he's pretty high up the chain and about as well known as any other baseball writer out there.
Having tried cases in domestic relations courts at the state level...

I'm very curious what unique hearsay exceptions exist that let DV prosecutions succeed, especially after Crawford? Because I sure as hell didn't find them. There are some that are more useful in DV than elsewhere (excited utterances, statements made for the purpose of medical treatment, etc etc) but they are still universally applicable. If you're talking about tender years that's generally unique to crimes of sexual violence.
His attorney all but admitted Keri threatened his wife...

so there's that.
i'm dumbfounded

by how incompetent his lawyer was in that interview. Dear lord it's impossible to find lawyers that can actually do something other than sit behind a computer and write invoices for finding creative ways to spend their time.
