A fun exercise that can span the entire age of Pro Football. Name a player who you believe was integral to their team(s) as a back up and stopgap. In other words, if there was a HOF back-ups, your choice would make it.
If you believe this is stupid, fine, you can opt not to participate. I hope y’all contribute.
Rotational players who play almost as many minutes as a starter, should not be considered. Also, you can consider those players who at times started, but were never considered starter material.
Ok, my choice for the back-up HOF, is Buffalo’s Frank Reich.
And go.
It’s not any player over another. Pick whomever you think is back-up HOF worthy. Hoss certainly merits
Miss read the question.
My bad
QB: 1.Foles 2.Hos 3. Reich
RB: Timmy Smith
I was thinking of Blackburn
George Blanda (Replaced Lamonica)
Mercury Morris
1 year back-ups
Tom Brady (Back-up to Bledsoe and led the team to SB win)
Ahmad Bradshaw
Rodger Staubuck

Yup, he was my first thought, but then I realized he has started a bunch of games
Yeah, Wikipedia almost ran out of space with all his stat accomplishments..😎
Another guy who also featured in a supporting role was early '70's Dolphin RB Jim Kiick. Csonka was a wrecking ball between the 5 yard lines, but could get bogged down trying to score inside the 5. That's when they would bring Kiick in. Despite not being a very big or powerful RB, he would wriggle, crawl, gouge, bite, and I swear, sometimes even tunnel, to get into the end zone.
Jim Kiick has to be on there too
Nick Foles 🤮
kenneth davis the RB for the Bills at that time was a good back-up and not a third down back.
Hixon did a great job considering his situation, but that drop in the play-offs against the eagles was a killer.
Besides quarterbacks and the running-backs of yester-year it's a tough one.
I like the Earl Morrall suggestion, because he stepped in successfully with multiple teams.
Marcus Allen was a backup in the middle part of his career, behind Bo Jackson and the recycled remains of Roger Craig and Eric Dickerson.
Great one!
Brandon Jacobs, never really a starter but always a key player. His blocking in key situations was incredible.
Actually, Morrall, was quite good with us, especially given the dreck he was left to work with
Yeah Griese got injured early in the season and he led them to the Super Bowl. I remember it was a pretty big deal when Shula went back to Griese at that point.
Joe Morrison
David Tyree
Lee Rouson
Tom Matte
But here a few more
Max McGee Packer backup receiver in Super Bowl I who broke curfew night before the big game. He didn’t think he would be starting. But went out on the field with a hangover and had a super game.
Bobby Duhon who married Tucker Frederickson’s sister and was the Lee Rouson of his era.
Jeff Rutledge - backup to Phil Simms when Hoss was the third QB
Brian Kelly - starting ILB before Gary Reasons or Pepper Johnson
Stacey Robinson - always the last WR to be cut but then resigned
Phil McConkey and John Mistler. Similar to Stacey

Fitzpatrick has gotten 3 chances? 4?
Don Strock should be on they list as QB way before him
