For fun only: Back-up players football “HALL OF FAME.”

Big Blue '56 : 7/21/2019 11:54 am
A fun exercise that can span the entire age of Pro Football. Name a player who you believe was integral to their team(s) as a back up and stopgap. In other words, if there was a HOF back-ups, your choice would make it.

If you believe this is stupid, fine, you can opt not to participate. I hope y’all contribute.

Rotational players who play almost as many minutes as a starter, should not be considered. Also, you can consider those players who at times started, but were never considered starter material.

Ok, my choice for the back-up HOF, is Buffalo’s Frank Reich.

And go.
Reich over Hoss?

It’s not any player over another. Pick whomever you think is back-up HOF worthy. Hoss certainly merits
Gotta put Nick Foles in their obviously.

I hate the Eagles and their fans but could never hate BDN for some reason.
I’m tempted to say Joe Morrison was the best of them all, imo,
Big Blue '56 : 7/21/2019 1:15 pm : link
given that he played so many positions and filled in admirably. Started at times.

Reale01 : 7/21/2019 2:01 pm : link
Earl Morrell (Replaced Unitas)
George Blanda (Replaced Lamonica)
Mercury Morris

1 year back-ups
Tom Brady (Back-up to Bledsoe and led the team to SB win)
Ahmad Bradshaw
Rodger Staubuck
OJ Anderson as a Giant
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 7/21/2019 2:02 pm : link
By the time he got to the Giants, it was definitely on the backside of his career. But when others got hurt he was a beast.

Erik Howard all were considered backups during the 86 season. They all helped that D reach a dominant level of play. Pepper and Howard became starters soon enough. Man those LBs were ridiculous. In 86 they were other worldly.
Yeah,

I assume the intent was for CAREER backups...

Yup, he was my first thought, but then I realized he has started a bunch of games
Somebody remarked on Sirius this
Big Blue '56 : 7/21/2019 4:13 pm : link
morning that Fitz will probably play into his mid-forties and there will still be about 6 teams that will want to sign him as a back-up
Hoss and OJ both came off the bench to fill in for Morris and Simms
Ira : 7/21/2019 4:16 pm : link
and give us our 2nd Super Bowl. For me, that can't be beat.
Giants related... only one answer
Existenz : 7/21/2019 4:22 pm : link
Chase Blackburn.... made some huge and significant plays in both runs
More a situational player

He is a player who actually made the HOF fame! The guy could do it all, and for a lot of years.

I think Chase Blackburn is a good choice also.
TC : 7/21/2019 7:27 pm : link
He did the most with what he had. I would argue that without Blackburn, there'd be no Superbowl XLVI. And not just because of the interception. The Giants run D had been soft all season, and when they brought Blackburn back he became the designated thumper, and the Giants got a lot harder to run on.

Another guy who also featured in a supporting role was early '70's Dolphin RB Jim Kiick. Csonka was a wrecking ball between the 5 yard lines, but could get bogged down trying to score inside the 5. That's when they would bring Kiick in. Despite not being a very big or powerful RB, he would wriggle, crawl, gouge, bite, and I swear, sometimes even tunnel, to get into the end zone.

I know they've been starters and successful as such
ChaChing : 7/21/2019 8:15 pm : link
but I thought of Jeff Garcia & Matt Hasslebeck, often being #2s going into seasons but pretty good off the bench or even longer stretches

The guy always stepped in and there was not a drop off. That holding call on him in Superbowl XLI was a crime. Turned the game around and made it a lot closer than it should have been.
For a few years there
TommytheElephant : 7/21/2019 11:31 pm : link
Ricky Manning JR was a good backup in Carolina

Jim Kiick has to be on there too

Nick Foles 🤮

kenneth davis the RB for the Bills at that time was a good back-up and not a third down back.

Hixon did a great job considering his situation, but that drop in the play-offs against the eagles was a killer.

Besides quarterbacks and the running-backs of yester-year it's a tough one.

Most truly great backups don’t remain backups.
Big Blue Blogger : 7/22/2019 5:08 am : link
Guys like Steve Young, Roger Staubach (unique case) and Ron Stone had to wait for years, but they eventually got their opportunity to shine.

I like the Earl Morrall suggestion, because he stepped in successfully with multiple teams.
Priest Holmes is an interesting case.
Big Blue Blogger : 7/22/2019 5:32 am : link
Good player in Baltimore. Eclipsed by Jamal Lewis in 2000. Went to Kansas City and became an absolute monster for three years.

Marcus Allen was a backup in the middle part of his career, behind Bo Jackson and the recycled remains of Roger Craig and Eric Dickerson.
Morrall is a superb example

More of an undersized fullback than a backup halfback - significantly smaller, in fact, than the star he blocked for. Also a great story - with military service and all, he didn't really play much until he was 28. Once he got on the field, though, it was pretty hard to get him off it.

was the first of the Wellington hat trick QB's in the dark years. A complete wash out with the Wellington Giants and then a Super Bowl QB after they left. Tarkington (was a good player for the Giants unlike the other two) and Craig Morton completed the hat trick.
Andy Headen

74 games played. 12 games started. A big part of the fearsome 3rd down pass rush in 1986.
Does Reyna Thomson count?
Rudy5757 : 7/22/2019 9:26 am : link
Special teams ace but no real position. Was a valuable asset back then.

Brandon Jacobs, never really a starter but always a key player. His blocking in key situations was incredible.

Actually, Morrall, was quite good with us, especially given the dreck he was left to work with

Back up that QB played 21 years in the NFL. I believe he eventually lost his job to both John Elway and Joe Montana. Was the oldest player on a Super Bowl roster in 1999. Has to be first ballot back up HOF'er.

Yeah Griese got injured early in the season and he led them to the Super Bowl. I remember it was a pretty big deal when Shula went back to Griese at that point.

Many of my favs already mentioned
yalebowl : 7/22/2019 10:49 pm : link
Andy Headen
Joe Morrison
David Tyree
Lee Rouson
Tom Matte

But here a few more

Max McGee Packer backup receiver in Super Bowl I who broke curfew night before the big game. He didn’t think he would be starting. But went out on the field with a hangover and had a super game.

Bobby Duhon who married Tucker Frederickson’s sister and was the Lee Rouson of his era.

Jeff Rutledge - backup to Phil Simms when Hoss was the third QB

Brian Kelly - starting ILB before Gary Reasons or Pepper Johnson

Stacey Robinson - always the last WR to be cut but then resigned

Phil McConkey and John Mistler. Similar to Stacey
