NFT: Police urge criminals to postpone their misdeeds

Jim in Fairfax : 7/21/2019 1:59 pm
Police in Braintree, MA posted the following announcement today:

"Due to the extreme heat, we are asking anyone thinking of doing criminal activity to hold off until Monday," the post said. "Conducting criminal activity, in this extreme heat is next level henchmen status, and also very dangerous.
"Stay home, blast the AC, binge Stranger Things season 3, play with the face app, practice karate in your basement We will all meet again on Monday when it's cooler."
When is crime ever cool?

Bad message...
Don't they have this issue in places with major seasons
Zeke's Alibi : 7/21/2019 2:05 pm : link
that crime skyrockets in the summer? Clearly it is easier to commit crime when the weather isn't brutal, but I think there is something about super hot temps that make people a little crazier. Even down here in Florida it seems the craziest Floridaman stories come out in July/August. Just had a story about a guy that cut off his wife's paramour dick off with scissors.

He said, "when it's cooler."

Meaning, when the temperatures subside.

Well what we know about anger is it causes an increase

I am surprised they did not say all crimes on days above 90 degrees will go unpunished.

I live there and I agree. Maybe that's why Braintree PD wants them to wait until the temp drops (only kidding of course). And of course the whole statement by Braintree PD was said "tongue in cheek" for those that may not understand.
kudos

I think it's pretty funny, and if not taken literally, it actually humanizes the police force.
Certainly a better story

My friend's brother was a cop near San Diego (Chula Vista precisely, which is not a great place to be a cop) and he said the same thing. He left to become a paramedic instead.

Is this a serious post? The chief was clearly being tongue in cheek.
Or at least the police Twitter feed.

This type of stuff is good, it humanizes the police.

of a very popular taco truck I used to frequent that's in a not-so-great (but not exactly hood-ish) part of Oakland. The taco truck employed a security guard during late evenings. I never had cause to think of him one way or the other until I observed him breaking up a fight in a stunningly civil and effective manner. I remember him sitting down with the aggressor -- who was staggeringly hammered -- and talking to him firmly yet sympathetically. Just watching him freaking get through to the guy, to appeal to the guy's better nature instead of making him feel shame or defensiveness -- was remarkable.

I remember thinking vividly, "This guy needs to be a cop."

The profession also attracts a certain personality type.

De-escalation is the word of the day for departments across the US.

And they are using military-grade technology (including vehicles) to deal with civilian protest (and deal with criminals and the odd (literally) citizen who themselves use combat armaments).

Kudos to forces that understand that the majority departments really are peace officers and try to diffuse situations with humor and humanization where possible.

Departments are a mix of employees. Following orders is part of it but police offiecrs for the most part work with very little direct supervision. They have a good deal of discretion.

RE: the military vehicles - lot of departments grab them because military offered them for free and they use them for their SWAT teams. 99% of police officers riding aournd in police cars, on foot, bikes.

The militarization thing has been overstated - it's most relevant re: police use, and sometimes overuse, of paramilitary units being used to serve warrants (e.g., drug searches)
