OBJ in GQ: Respect for Mara, not DG; kept brand alive

Defenderdawg : 7/22/2019 9:10 am
Green GQ: Odell Beckham Jr., Unguarded

Are you worried about the OBJ brand shrinking by playing in a smaller market like Cleveland?
I forever will have love for the New York fans. They gave me my first home. But there's this sense of entitlementlike I was made there. And in my head, that was the first place I had the opportunity to show the world what God had set out for me to do. It didn't matter where I was at. Now, did it help that it was Sunday Night Football for the New York Giants versus the Dallas Cowboys? One thousand percent. But The Catch happened around the entire world. I feel like it wouldn't matter where I was atonce you got hooked onto who I was and what I was doing. And who knows? If I was in another place, you don't know if the numbers would've been more or less.

Did you like the added pressure that comes from playing for a New York team?
I loved it. Not for attention purposes. I just loved New Yorkers. They're such a unique group of people. Good or bad. It's both sides. But God made me. You know what I mean? God made me. That's just where he gave me my first opportunity to show where I was at. It was like lightning struck for me. I remember looking on Instagram after the game [with The Catch] and my followers went up, like, 100K. I was like, This is crazy. And then the next week, going into practice, 200K. It was going at a rate that I was like: If you were to ask me five years ago if I would've had 13 million followers on Instagram, I would've told you, Nahno way I would have 13 million followers.

Do you think there's any validity to the criticism that you're not a good teammate?
You can literally ask any one of my teammates. My on-the-field football never gets talked about unless people are talking about antics. They don't talk about numbers. Where's the reel at? People only want to focus on one thing. I feel like I'm one of the only people in the NFL where my personal life and my brand are the only things that get talked about. They'll do a whole segment about the car that I have on ESPN. Why? I've never been arrested. Never have and never will be putting my hands on a woman. I've never done any crimes. I've never done anything but some little petty, dumb stuff that we keep harping on. They asked, how could I have changed if I didn't go to OTAs? I have to be the very best me to help my team. We don't get paid to be at OTAs. If you want players to be there, make it mandatory and pay them. I got traded to a new team, I already paid to live here in L.A. for the entire summer. Are the Giants or Cleveland going to reimburse me for what I've already paid? Are they going to reimburse my trainers, who I've already paid? Are they going to reimburse me for the dogs who I've had to put in kennels? There's a lot of expenses. Are they going to pay for the rehab I was doing? No. They don't do all of that. That stuff is all on our own. So when it gets time for us to have our own life outside of football, they say something. When the game is done with you, they chew you up, spit you out. You're done. You're done. I have to take care of myself and my family. Period. I talk to everybody in the locker room. When someone gives me free stuff, I ask them to send a hundred of them for my teammates. A hundred Sprayground bags They put them in the locker room. I asked for them to send me Casper mattresses. They sent me 100 Casper mattresses for the staff and the team.

It seemed like the general consensus among New Yorkers was that the Giants didn't get enough for you in that trade.
I didn't care what they got for the trade.
Where were you when you got the news?
I was in Paris heading to dinner. I saw the calls and was like, Wow, I wonder where I'm going. They had been talking about trading me. They could never get past my past. There's always that past that whatever happened, I would never be able to outgrow it. That's why I don't try to bring none of this to Cleveland. I don't even care. When I get there, this is a fresh start for me.

But how'd you feel in that exact moment?
My initial reaction was not disappointment. I felt disrespected. Like, after everything I've done for them. This is me being honest: This team has not been good for the last six years. Period. Even the year we went to the playoffs and everyone was talking about this and that. And we went there, and I didn't have a great playoff game. Don't get me wrong, I had a terrible game. But I left the game with seven targets, and I'm supposed to be your number one receiver. I left the game with seven targets. We lost. They scored 40 points. It's just all bad. I felt disrespected, because I felt like I was a main reason at keeping that brand alive. They were getting prime-time games, still, as a 5-and-11 team. Why? Because people want to see the show. You want to see me play. That's just real rap. I'm not sitting here like, It's because of me. But let's just be real. That's why we're still getting prime-time games. I felt disrespected they weren't even man enough to even sit me down to my face and tell me what's going on.

Who, specifically, is they? The G.M.?
The G.M. And I'll forever have respect for [Giants president and CEO] Mr. Mara. Everything he's ever done for me, he's shown nothing but love. Even when we were having our talks, it was coming from a place of love. I could always feel it. So I'll forever have respect for him. But then to be called like that and then be texted by your coach and be like, Oh, yeah, I heard the news. Yeah, you heard the news? It happened because of you. The reason I'm gone is because of you. It was just tough because of the way I initially felt. On the other side of it, I was excited about a new start because I had beenhonestly, I had been praying to God the season before this season for a change.
You felt like you just couldn't play there anymore.
I can't do this anymore. I just can't do it. I wasn't happy. I wasn't in a good place. And like I told you earlier, I feel like everything is about happiness, and I just was not. And even thinking about my car: I had ordered that car in December.

I dont see any winning or losing in the battle. what makes someone win here?
i just read what he said... took no offense to any of it other then highlighting 7 targets more than him playing bad. outside of that... what was offensive? nothing really- its a person answering questions. people doing victory laps as if this interview validates some biased view --- shows they care as much ore more than OBJ---
the guy is the biggest brand in the NFL- that brand is setting he and his family up for the next 3 generations.
the giants have been a dumpster fire for 6 years... hopefully based on better drafting and getting a line and barkley- that changes--- but it wont be because they traded OBJ or didnt- its just all stupid. its a GQ article
Can we move on from this guy...he's not a Giant

Yeah, I've always defended him when he gets grouped together with players who have done actual bad stuff (like he said here - arrest, abuse, etc) and I'll still defend him that way. But he's just so darn immature in some ways, and that's enough for me to be okay with the fact that they moved on from him.

This interview is just more evidence that he might be a good guy and a great player, but he's immature enough that it totally affects his reputation (and seemingly too immature to realize it).

Giants read the situation correctly that he was going to be a problem for Saquon and a new QB. We should thank Antonio Brown for pulling the shit he did, he helped the Giants maximize the return on Odell.

Just to be fair, let's give the full context. He admits first that he had a terrible game. Of course he should have just left it there instead of getting into his targets count or blaming defense too. But I was a bit surprised/relieved to see him at least admit the first part.

is so ludicrous I don't even know how to address it.

They are very close friends and OBJ has presented him with many of those rewards.

You wan't to say that his personality would have been tough for a rookie QB to manage, fine, but he has never been nothing other than ecstatic for his team mates success.

Find me one instance where he had a blow up in a game we won because he didn't get enough targets.

nothing likeable about the guy

spent time with kids with cancer, helps support veterans, when people offered him free things he asked that they send stuff to staff and players. fro all the guys her calling him me-me, the narcissist, - nothing to like - really?

made some reasonable comments about OTAs.

he's gone, wished they had worked things out, based on rumors and some comments he could have handled things better. think his difficulty w/coaching & medical staff were probably the big ticket items that got him shipped out.

but the obsession and dislike some people have for a guy they never even met. unreal. I'm a Giant fan he's no longer a Giant - I'm over it, have been since about a week or so after the trade

New York is always going to get three prime time games for simply being New York. Did Odell give NFL more of a reason to put the Giants on? Sure. But he wasn't THE reason.

Again, if you've been a fan of the team more than five years, you already should know this.

Why is Cleveland getting prime time games this year? Because they are getting good. They would have gotten prime time games this year without Odell. He's just an added draw.

Yes, NY will get 3 min for just being NY. The other 2 are because of him.

The browns may have gotten 1 prime time game over the mandated thurs night without him but no way are they getting 4 games without him.

He is a TV draw, I don't know how you can deny it. Its likely he will either do something spectacular or something crazy. It makes for great television.

that he cares about his teammates, family members, etc. That he also does charitable things, signs autographs and does things for kids. However, his narcissism transcends all that, in my opinion. If you cannot get that from reading this article, then I don't know what to tell you.

I rooted like hell for the guy when he was here, defended some of his stupid stuff and hope he does well in Cleveland. With that being said, I am glad he is off the team. It doesn't matter that Beckham didn't have blow ups in games over his targets. He talks about it enough to let you know what his priorities are and were.

I want the player (Barkley) who says he's not happy with some sort of ludicrous statistical season if the team isn't winning. And doesn't give a shit about his numbers.

Beckham - over and over again, you hear him talk about his "looks" his targets, not getting the ball enough, not getting used like other receivers. It's ME, ME, ME... MY numbers, MY targets, MY brand.

It's really not that hard to learn how to handle the media and answer questions in better ways. But reporters knew that if they had him behind a mic long enough, he'd give them something controversial. He really just never got better at it.

He so rarely wants to take responsibility for anything. It's like pulling teeth for him to just say "I didn't do enough to help my team win today - I need to be better"

It's everyone else's fault but his.

Football more than any other is a team sport.

I rode for Odell for a really long time because he's such a great talent and made watching the Giants offense exciting when he was 100% and putting the offense on his back (2016). I wanted so badly for him to just finally get it and have it click and get his head in the right place... but over and over again, I'd just cringe at the stuff he'd say and it got harder and harder to defend.

By the point of the ESPN / Lil Wayne thing, I realized it was just never going to change. This is who he is.

I won't root against him or spend my Sundays scoreboard watching the Browns every week out of some sort of strange complex where I need to see them do poorly. I don't think this is going to work out for them, but if it does, good for them - it won't bother me.

But, just look at how much play these threads still get here - and he's not even a Giant anymore.

No one is bigger than the team. I don't want this shit here anymore and I'm glad we've moved on.

He's bitching about the lack of touches in a playoff game where he dropped two first quarter TD's?? And that he "kept the brand alive".

I wanted OBJ to stay here, but it is clear it was the best move to ship his ass out - especially to Cleveland.

Don't forget the pitch and catch 4th and 2 on first drive he dropped. Which cost us points and massive momentum.

the thread title made it sound like he has a beef with DG. I am sure that he does. But the quote about "hearing he got traded" that miffed him was (I think) referencing PS. Combining that with people saying the he told PS to eff off on occasions over the season indicated (to me) that he a PS must have really clashed. That, in and of itself, would have made it untenable to retain one or the other party long term.

The other part I don't get was about not getting paid for rehab. He was out for long stretches of nearly every year he was with the team...do players not get paid when they miss games while rehabbing?

Now I don't think there's anything wrong with this. Not everybody plays the game for the same reasons. If Odell wants to be as famous as possible and make as much money as he can, that's his prerogative. He's well on his way to accomplishing this. But...

...at the same time, it's certainly fair to for the Giants to say we're just better off not having someone like that around the team anymore, no matter how talented he is. And we're better off cutting bait now, getting what we can, before the situation really boils over.

I defended him for a long time, I suppose I still do to an extent. But this offseason has only made it more and more clear that the Giants made the right choice to move on. It wasn't going to work, and it was exhausting. And it would seem that Odell still doesn't really understand why they made the decision they did.

I'm fascinated to see how this season goes in Cleveland.
Amazing article. Its long, but a great great interview.
Shecky : 7/22/2019 11:01 am : link

Heres the TL; DR (but still long aka a longer summary)

- I was always the underdog. I wasn't the number one drafted receiver in my class, even though I wanted to be. I said I wanted to be a top-10 pickI wasn't. I said I wanted to win a Heisman in collegeI didn't. At LSU, I wanted to win a national championship. I got there and we got blown out. And then I was like, I have to win Rookie of the Year. There's no ifs, ands, or buts. I have to win Rookie of the Year. I pulled my hamstring, and everyone was like, Oh, he's a bum, he's a bust,
> lol,all I took away from this quote was damn, hes less of a winner than I thought. My thoughts went from possibly best WR in history to a great stats guy who always comes in 2nd or third. Accurate or not, but it did change my perception of him and his successes

- Talks about growing up, and his idols. Vick and AI. One question after his answers involves advising people to be careful what they say...
> not the best role models 😝

Then talks about wanting to retire a couple of years ago, but keeps playing for the money. Yes, flat out says he wanted to quit, but keeps playing to feed his kids...
> I CANT wait for this full story to reveal itself. Safe to say it involves his animosity towards Giants, and the Giants finally being sick of dealing with his BS

- Do you think you'll ever make a catch better than that one?
Yeah. That was just one on that stage. And then you got the haters that are like, Yeah, they still lost that game. That has nothing to do with what we're talking about. I go back and look at my stats and how people talk about me, and it's like, Oh, but you never won anything, and you do this and that. And I go and watch every highlight, and every highlight I'm watching, it's third down. It's making a big play. It's late in the game when we're down, to get us closer. These are game-changing moments.
> game changing, perhaps. But to me it brings me back to him finishing 2nd and 3rd more than I thought about. He considers a game changing play to be a play that made the team lose by less points. Perhaps an ALMOST game changing play. Or momentum changing, but not exactly game changing.

He's won six Super Bowls. I want to win the same way he wants to win. Whether I hit a kicking net or whether I do whatever. I want to win that bad. I care about winning more than anything. I didn't get into this to celebrate and score touchdowns. I didn't get into this for followers for Instagram.
> strange comment, but I think thats projection at its finest. I think he would eat up interview day at the Super Bowl. I think he, more than any other player, would live for the two week buildup. And would want to win, make a game winning play, purely for the fame, money and followers.

- I wake up every day from 6:30 a.m., to then leave the facility at 5 p.m., to then have to go home, do two hours of rehab, to then do whatever, to then need to go to sleep, like I said. I have six hours a day to do what they would call free time. My free time is spent on a table, doing a massage or yoga. There's not enough time in the day.
> did he really consider the hours he sleeps as part of his work day? His job? That his free time is wasted away doing yoga and getting messages? Way to win over the masses

> His whole rant about not getting paid for OTAs. How he should get reimbursed for renting a house in LA, his trainers, dogs kennel. Is he insane? He gets paid an insane amount of money. I assume he knows about OTAs since they happen EVERY year... but wants to be reimbursed because no one told him about OTAs? Then follows it up that hes a good teammate because when someone sends him something for free, he asks for 100 FREE things. So far, its all about money with him, in case it isnt obvious: wont do things he isnt paid to do, loads up on freebies, and almost quit but couldnt pass up the money... never about the team. EVER.

> I love how he considers himself on same level as LeBron. Who at least has won. But is know on for being A Rod like in being misunderstood aka an insincere selfish prick. So Vick, LeBron and AI...

> Heres a doozy: I would be up and down the sidelines saying that, like, Why did you sign me?

> The following back and forth I found hysterical. Reality is, hes keeping his hair because its a money maker, its his brand. Blames it on Im doing it for the kids, but then mocks adults for idolizing him 😂

Have you thought about cutting the hair to punctuate the fresh start?
I'm thinking about it.

Really?!
Yeah. But I would probably grow it back out. I feel like after I cut it I would just get used to not having it. But I know kids all around the world love it.

Do you think the hair is part of your signature in the same way the Catch logo is?
It definitely is, bro. I have a personal attachment to it. Just because it's my hair. It is my hair. I've had grown men come up to me with my haircut.

That must be weird.
It is weird. But it's, like, Aye bruh, if that works for you

> I actually gained a ton of respect for his answer to people questioned him if he is gay pr not. That might have been his only real, honest answer in the whole interview. You could tell it wasnt pre planned, thought out - but genuine.

> Here we go again...

Any chance you'd be a commentator?
No chance. No disrespect to those guys. If you see me on one of those shows, it's because I'm getting a healthy paycheck. It's going to be that.... So after football, I could see the movie thing. I can see some shows. I can see some Hollywood-esque stuff.

because of his injuries anyway, was not worth keeping him here. Great move by DG. Great move, imv.

I'm not sure the jury is in yet re: the "injuries taking their toll" theory.

I was never actually rooting for Odell to be traded

And when I was I got a big sense of relief
Similar to putting my dog down who has been getting old and crippled but u just look for those glimpses for reasons why you dont take her to the vet to put her to sleep
And then when u do your like damn. That was really the best thing to do and I should have done that awhile ago
Nothing bad about Odell
But he is not a leader, clearly is interested in me over team and just isnt the type of guy to push u over the top
Insane talent. Someone can win a Super Bowl with him but it wont be because of him
The distraction just started to outweigh the talent
If d Lawrence balls as I think he can, plus peppers active ss/ rover ,plus throw is 2020 salary cap relief. Well lets just say it benefits both parties

there's an interesting correlation tying together several of the posters who defend OBJ - and I'm sure it isn't lost on you.
