Right before training camp, the #Giants are bringing in FA safety Tre Boston for a visit today, source said. A potential signing.
I like this a lot

I think Boston is criminally underrated. He may even be a better FS than Bethea.
Gettleman drafted Boston in Carolina.
Klaatu : 7/22/2019 10:18 am : link
He can be a pain-in-the-ass, but he's a damned good Safety.
Boston..
FatMan in Charlotte : 7/22/2019 10:19 am : link
played is a celebrity soccer match in Charlotte over the weekend and scored two goals!!

Guy still has it!
Well, we are down a Safety

they

have a roster spot with Kamrin Moore suspended.
Yes please to Boston
Rjanyg : 7/22/2019 10:23 am : link
I was hoping he would sign in March
Cyprien isn't bad either, but he's more of a in-the-box guy
Anakim : 7/22/2019 10:27 am : link
A trio of Boston, Peppers and Bethea would be fantastic, IMO
Both
Eric from BBI : Admin : 7/22/2019 10:33 am : link
of these guys have played in 70 or more games. Cyprien has started all 70 games he has played in. Boston started 44 of the 72 regular-season games he has played in. Both were relatively high picks and are still young. I'm surprised they are out there.

Cyprien missed all of last year with a torn ACL
Cyprien tore his ACL last year.
Klaatu : 7/22/2019 10:37 am : link
Boston may have priced himself too high. He reportedly turned down a couple of "prove it" deals already.

How is Boston a pain in the ass? If true, would it be a conflict given the team's efforts to change the culture?
I would feel much better about the safety depth with either added
Jay on the Island : 7/22/2019 10:38 am : link
I would prefer Boston as he isn't coming off a torn ACL.

I saw that but you would have thought someone would have signed him to a 1-year deal a couple of months ago.

He's got a big ego and an even bigger mouth. He'd love to sign a long-term deal - he's made no secret about that - but for the past couple of years he's had to settle for one-year deals from teams that then chose not to re-sign him when that deal was up. He's been pretty vocal about how much that bothers him. This year was a buyer's market for Safeties, which hasn't helped his cause, either.
Boston please.
RDJR : 7/22/2019 10:58 am : link
Local kid. Would love to see him in blue. He can still play and in the right situation will perform at a high level.
It's odd that Boston hasn't been able to find a long term deal
Jay on the Island : 7/22/2019 10:59 am : link
The safety position has become more important over the past few years and Boston is a very solid one and relatively young.
Wow, he is still rather young at a just turned 27.
Big Blue '56 : 7/22/2019 11:13 am : link
Wasnt that the approximate age the Rolle was when he came here?

Whats the knock on the guy?

There may be red flags that we're not aware of. When the team that drafted you cuts you loose a year early, and then two teams that sign you as a free agent for a year choose not to re-sign you even after you've played relatively well, that's got to make you stop and think.

As I said, he's damned good on the field, but it's not like his game doesn't have any flaws. He's terrific in coverage, but he isn't the surest of tacklers (his stats notwithstanding), so it's risky if you're going to depend on him to be your last line of defense.
Peppers, Bethea, Thomas, Cyprien or Boston
Biteymax22 : 7/22/2019 11:32 am : link
Not a bad group of safeties actually. Would be interesting to see if Love or Ballentine get any work at the position as well.
Skins fans will go nuts if NYG signs Tre B

So says JP Finlay of NBC Sports DC.

I gather Boston was the object of their desire at FA time to pair with Collins.

He's not going to be more than a backup
BillT : 7/22/2019 11:52 am : link
If he can make the team but shows the FO is still thinking about upgrades.

Don't get why Washington would be upset. He's available so if they wanted him why didn't they sign him or even sign him now?

I'm not so sure about that. He's a better player than Bethea (Who I like). He could also play FS while playing Bethea at SS which would allow Peppers to play the moneybacker role.

It's the fans who will be upset. They think he wasn't signed because Skins don't have the money. Which could be an issue for NYG as well.

I think he could very well start over Bethea on merit and who knows if Bethea can stay healthy at his age.

Also recall this in doing research on Boston back when free agency opened in March:

Dave Gettleman told Boston and others that his wife Joanne's favorite player in Carolina was ... Tre Boston.
Either one would be
Cenotaph : 7/22/2019 12:11 pm : link
a solid, underrated addition to our Safety depth. We seem pretty set at CB, but there are probably still a few spots we could see players added (nothing close to the turnover we had last year though). These guys still being available says something about tough it can be for mid-level vets in the NFL - teams often prefer to go young or with their own vets

Last year Bethea stayed healthy (16 starts) and led all NFL DBs in tackles (121) and solo tackles (100) and had 3 sacks. Seems he probably has at least a little left, no?
Cyprien and Boston are two very different players.
Klaatu : 7/22/2019 12:47 pm : link
Strong Safety as opposed to Free Safety. If you search the archives, you can probably find a couple of threads/posts by me slobbering all over Cyprien during his week at the Senior Bowl in 2013.

I'm wondering, though, if signing one of them would impact next year's comp picks (that 3rd for Collins)? Not that it would prevent me from doing it if I was Gettleman and believed it would help the team this year, I'm just curious.
Whats up with the safety position the past couple years
eli4life : 7/22/2019 12:48 pm : link
Its like the market has just been nonexistent for the position

Good question. The answer is no. The data has expired where players signed count against comp picks.

Thank you.
I believe any player signed this late doesn't effect

the compensation picks. I believe that is one of the reasons why we waited to sign M. Remmers. that and his back surgery.

Not this year. There were quite a few Safeties who did well in free agency.

Not really knocking Bethea. When you're 35 the odds that you will stay the same player you were the year before aren't as good as at age 27.

As suggested in the thread maybe Giants can get them both on the field this season at the same time. And maybe Boston could stick around for a few years if he proves out.
Was hoping for Tre Boston early on ..

brings depth and competition ..
Anyone know if either of them will potentially

The deadline has passed so any player signed has no impact on next years comp pick formula.

Remmers was a different story. He was released therefore he did not count on the comp pick formula. He was signed late because the Giants were waiting for him to get healthy enough to pass a physical.

Did Kamrin Moore do us fans a favor?
rasbutant : 7/22/2019 4:21 pm : link
By getting in trouble? I don't know what skills Moore has, but I've hear good things about these two players more so than i have Moore. However, Moore was on the roster (before getting into trouble) and they weren't. So who is the better player??? I think its one of these two, so maybe that mean this potential signing would have happened even if Moore had not got in trouble?

Who is the better player? It's not even close. Moore wasn't going to make the team, but Boston or Cyprien certainly could.
and we know how Klaatu loves and knows his Safeties
