In addition to the obvious reasons for him not to play, there're good reasons to give the rest of the backs plenty of touches to help sort out who goes and stays, and if they stay, what their primary roles will be.
It's an interesting group. Does Perkins have a role to play here? What's Gallman's ceiling? Smith and Penny, or Smith OR Penny? Hilliman; practice squad or good bye?
I didn't see this thread when I asked a question in the training camp thread.
I would have Barkley on the AP/Tomlinson "no carries in preseason" schedule. It's pointless to expose him to even one unnecessary play/chance for an injury.
I wouldn’t play any starters on offense this week against the JESTs and that POS defensive coordinator they have.
Let Eli etal including Barkley get a series or 2 against the Bears then sit them ... Eli plays a half in the 3rd game (no Barkley) then no starters again in game 4. At this level, guys only need 2 games max to be ready to go so let it be games 2 and 3. The other 2 games are for roster spots and owners greed.
I'd play him for two series a game and sit him for the last game.
He should see game action to be ready for the Cowboys.
Probably what I'd do. I get the risk involved which is why it's not an easy decision.
I think he needs to see game-action more for the pass blocking than anything. Edge rushers and blitzers in a pre-season game are coming way harder and with more intent than in practice. He's not bad at it but he needs to improve as a pass blocker.
What Saquon sees: The Giants running back breaks down his role Â
you probably want him on the field with Jones, not Manning. I'm thinking:
1) Jones needs more help out there than Manning does, and
2) The competition for backup RB depends more on how Gallman, Smith and Perkins mesh with Manning.
So put the backup RBs out there with Eli, put Barkley out there with Jones for a few snaps, then get both Eli and Saquon off the field and take their helmets away.
Remmers and Zeitler (and Halapio, maybe) need a few series with him at game speed. The running game has to carry the team in September, so it better be ready.
It's ok....SB's special delivery has just been made at the stadium Â
He should see game action to be ready for the Cowboys.
Just not worth the risk, or wear and tear.
And that, to me, is a ton of touches - 400+.
Maybe a series here and there, thats it

There is absolutely nothing to gain by seeing Barkley take hits in meaningless games.
I think Eli would need some live game reps with Tate, especially given Tate's 4-game absence to start the season.

Duggan on The Athletic - ( New Window )
After the preseason game in 2017 against Williams' CLE defense, and OBJ's ankle injury, I want Barkley nowhere near the field Thursday.
I don't think I'd play him in the first game or the last one. I'd just give him a series or two in the middle two games and that's a wrap.
They know what he is. Get Gallman and especially Perkins some work.

I would not play him. Like you said, Eric. Maybe a few series in game three. That's it.
