do the giants have to win thursday? It’s a preseason and

plato : 8/7/2019 12:29 am
therefore a meaningless game right? I say NO, Giants must learn how to win and that starts ASAP.

there is much involved in learning how to win. i remember when Coach Parcells put the Giants first team back in the 4th Quarter of a “meaningless” preseason game so the Giant team of that time would remember how important winning is. it will be interesting to see how this coach approaches this. it will tell a lot about him and this team.

whether the jets makes it different i think is irrelevant. but we should be watching closely, there is more learning than just positional awareness going on.

It's not about winning, it's about the players knowing their job and executing it correctly.
totally agree
Pork Chop : 8/7/2019 12:50 am : link
if they lose Thursday, or even win by a small margin (fewer than 17 points), write off the season and play for the #1 pick. it's the only logical position.

pork chop”,perfect, if this team doesn’t learn how to win in the NFL,
plato : 8/7/2019 1:55 am : link
then the drag ass seasons of 4th qtr losses continues. for a team learning how to win is what it takes an army to learn, and individuals. almost winning and close games or just missed just produces a culture of “almost good enough” which is never good enough.

better start early so habits and drive is ingrained.

we’ll see how the HC deals with it. it will tell a lot.
Ummm, no

It is always better to win, but do they have to win...no.

Want to see the guys take some snaps and develop.

Hopefully no one gets hurt.

how many preseasons have you been around again?

Here's what you want to see: the first team coming out sharp and producing while they are on the field; and Daniel Jones not being overwhelmed facing an NFL team with the second team or whatever snaps he gets. Players making plays. The defense stopping the run and the pass, and maybe even penetrating the front line and pressuring the Jets QB.

Shurmur is not playing everyone this game, he's already said that. So I think your expectations of a must win don't match with the goals of the first preseason game.
I always feel it is
joeinpa : 8/7/2019 6:39 am : link
Significant to some extent how the 1’s and others destined to make the roster “perform”!

But there is little to no significance to wins or losses because I don’t think the games are approached with winning as the main objective.

However I disagree with those that dismiss sloppy and inefficient performances throughout the preseason as meaningless.
More important..

Pre-season folks. Wins mean absolutely nothing.
What matters is that the starters play well. And since some starters aren't playing, then it's just about seeing the younger guys.
I would like to see the first team offense

Largely meaningless from a score perspective, but how nice

why a preseason game is NOT meaningless and also, why winning is NOT the most important purpose of the game (although the most satisfying for the general fan).

This is a pretty big night for Jones.

Important to Win....No, But
varco : 8/7/2019 8:13 am : link
Looking back to last season's first preseason game, I recall being very disappointed in that the team's historical weaknesses were on full display...opposing tight ends and WR's running wild, poor offensive line play, no pass rush, etc. Would I like to see a win ....sure, but to me, it's much more important to see improved play by the defense and decent blocking by the reconstructed offensive line. I would rather see the team displaying a core set of competencies to build upon vs. having to start from scratch. I know there is no real game planning or scheming in the first preseason game, but being outclassed, talent-wise, like we were last year, would not be a good sign.

This team is so young they're still learning the fundamentals of the systems. At this stage, you basically want to see them demonstrate grasp of their assignments and a low number of mental errors. You want to see them compete and bust their ass.

Real basic.
All I want is for...
dep026 : 8/7/2019 8:43 am : link
Eli to checkdown on 3rd and 8 for five yards...
The OL to whiff on a stunt
Barkley to be hit as soon as he touches it
The defense to give up a 3rd and 11 to a guy wide open

Then I’ll know we are in mid season form :)

And BBI will be a joy to read.
Of course they don't need to win
Mike from Ohio : 8/7/2019 8:44 am : link
These guys have played and coached football most of their lives and have had success doing so or they wouldn't have made it this far. Nobody on that roster is some high school freshman who doesn't understand what is expected of him.

Get out of this game with no significant injuries and it will have been a good game.

Agree but Jones is going to face the Eli issue. With the 2nd team OL in shambles due to injury he going to have a very shaky unit in front of him. Hopefully the Jets 2nd team D is equally inept.
No injuries and see the rookies play well
Matt in SGS : 8/7/2019 8:48 am : link
that's all I've cared about in watching pre-season games for the past 30+ years.

Now, I will grant that with the changes in the CBA and training camp hitting, that pre-season means more now as far as the physical aspect to get into "football shape" and be ready for live hitting. So that part is much different than in the past.

But any game in which you don't actually game plan for the opponent (and in this case, playing the Jets in the season means you should show less), similar to spring training baseball when the game is going on as guys are jogging around the warning track, I could care less about wins and losses.
I don't think it's a very important night for Jones
NBGblue : 8/7/2019 8:56 am : link
but every snap is big for Lauletta and Tanney. One of them isn't going to make the team and this is their chance to make their case for staying or possibly getting picked up by another team.

The hell with the regular season. I want that preseason trophy.

Why work on assigments? Keep the first team in for the entire game. They should be able to beat rookies with no preplaning on either side.

I don't give a shit if we lose all preseason games as long as we get the needed work in.

BBI often dismisses poor pre-season play...
EricJ : 8/7/2019 9:07 am : link
we make excuses for the team. Well it does not count. Or.. it was a vanilla game plan (HATE THAT).

Meanwhile, we get physically beaten by our opponents. The offensive line getting pushed back into our QB is not related to play calling. It is an indication that the people in those positions are out matched.

Same on the defensive side of the ball. I am more concerned about the point of attack versus what happens on the back end. If we cannot control the line of scrimmage in pre-season, then we will struggle during the regular season.

We should expect the secondary to struggle. There, you rely a lot on the mental part of the game and scheme. Players out of position giving up big plays can be corrected.
I get your point about building a winning culture
Rudy5757 : 8/7/2019 9:07 am : link
but preseason is just that, a warm up to the regular season. You want to see guys progress from game 1 to game 4. Teams play a lot of basic O and D so its about executing even though you may not be in the correct O or D for the situation.

This is a great time to evaluate the O and D lines where you really cant do as much in camp. The O in general should look sharp, run the right routes and pick up the assignments.

Its evaluation, the score is meaningless. If we win but our top O and D play like shit its a loss. You can also lose the game and see some players shine and be able to evaluate them better. This is a big game for the 2nd and 3 teamers and any 1st team guys looking to solidify their spot.

Agreed. We can't afford to shoot ourselves in the leg with the first big game of the year. It's do or die.
The 1’s, in recent history, have looked like shit every preseason
The_Boss : 8/7/2019 9:31 am : link
Most of that can be attributed to a shit OL which couldn’t handle vanilla stunts. How many times have we seen the starting OL going about a quarter in preseason game 4? I’ll watch, no doubt. But I do expect to see plenty of mistakes and poor play.

If you are a lousy NFL coach. Just ask Steve Spurrier how it worked out for him after his first preseason 38-7 win vs the 49ers in Japan. He never understood why his offense didn't work in the regular season after he had so much success in that preseason game.

Preseason is for figuring out the depth chart and letting your starters have some game reps to get ready for the season.

I'd like to see the first team O and D look good, and I'd like to see production from the draftees.

And NO INJURIES
