All this hasn't gone very well for them, has it? One would rather not see this unfortunate team thrashed so utterly and completely. There's a lot of baseball yet to be played this season.
This is pathetic
Stu11 : 8/7/2019 10:07 pm : link
I agree Greg. The O's were always a class orginization growing up. Of course they were a division rival so there wasn't any love there but there was always respect. Even in the late 80's when we sucked and I was in school there and I would go to the old memorial stadium for a ton of games there and they'd abuse me I respected what their orginization stood for. Now they're a joke. Barely a major league team. For us to come in here with this lineup the past 3 nights. They should be as embarrased as you can be.

But I am not looking forward to either Sanchez or Stanton returning. Romine and Higgy have done an incredible job and they don't strike out and have so many terrible at bats like Sanchez. Sanchez has alarmingly looked like the same player as last year(his defense is better)the second half of the season. He has been a hole in the middle of the lineup. I also don't need to see Stanton either. This team has incredible chemistry and either Tauchman or Maybin would be sent down for Stanton which is IMO, a huge mistake. I realize that the Yankees aren't going to sit Stanton with his contract but the team is on a great run this season and Stanton has contributed nothing. Tough decisions are coming up and I am afraid it will not be for the better.

They can't send Maybin down. He's out of options. Stanton isn't coming back until the rosters expand in September probably.

Romine and Higashioka have been fantastic in relief of Gary - but you're falling into a trap of small sample sizes.

Gary can carry a lineup by himself when he's hot. And I think fans are starting to write him off again - short memories.

As noted above, Maybin has no options. The Yankees aren't going to DFA him and lose him. He's been absolutely awesome and he's become a heart and soul player for this team.

Stanton isn't close to returning and Hicks probably isn't that close either. Odds are we're going to hit September or get close before we ever have to worry about who the odd man out is in the OF.

Regardless, worrying about whose place Stanton will take is pointless. He's barely doing anything but light, reduced-impact running right now. He's not close and this decision doesn't have to be made now or anytime soon. This stuff often shakes itself out.
Gary was probably worn out

masked how fundamentally shitty that organization was, top to bottom. They lucked out in large part because they had 6 top-5 picks in a row (and Machado was the only one who became a star). But their approach to IFA was shit, they were anathema to FAs because of their issues with physicals, and the majority of players couldn't wait to leave. Angelos was sitting on a devoted fan base and one of the great modern parks in baseball and he managed to piss that away, such that much of NOVA and even some of Southern MD have been given over to the Nats. Just a textbook case of how not to run a franchise.

They're in better shape going forward with Rutschman and DL Hall and seem to have really hit on Grayson Rodriguez (and they've changed over their pitching development so it is no longer a virtual certainty they'll destroy those arms) and they're starting to play in IFA, but it's still a pretty shallow farm, all things considered. They are years away.

Romine has a two week hot streak and the usual suspects pop up to pretend that this is who he is as a hitter, and not his wretched career stats. He also is inferior to Sanchez behind the plate - rag arm, calls a lousy game

Good morning,

Interested in your thoughts on Yankee righty starter Brian Keller.

He recently threw a no hitter in Trenton, and was rewarded with a promotion to AAA Scranton.

Should Yankees fans consider him as an eventual member of the Yankee rotation?

Sort of random, but passing on Harper looks better and better by the day...

.249/.370/.459/.829

19 HR, 73 RBI

2.6 fWAR

He's barely even a top 50 position player at this point and the Phillies are going nowhere. Not his fault - but that's a lot of scratch to pay for a guy who doesn't appear to be making much of a difference.

Probably not. He dominated AA as a 25 year old, which is good, and it's hard to do better than a sub-1 WHIP and a BB rate around 2, but he's a fly ball pitcher with a (relatively) low K rate. Pitching at Trenton that hasn't meant homeruns, but that is unlikely to carry over to AAA. He has a deep repertoire, a crafty righty of sorts, but unless the needle has moved his velocity is 90-93 for the most part. He's more in that JAG category.
Thanks Dune

Who has a better future as a Yankees starter:

Deivi Garcia

Gil has the frame to keep doing what he's doing. Smart money says that Deivi will eventually break down because virtually everyone that size and with that frame has done so. Pedro is really the only counter-example, maybe Billy Wagner (though Wagner wasn't as slight). But Deivi is younger and has done it at higher levels than Gil, so I wouldn't bet against him.
One last question
YANKEE28 : 8/8/2019 9:11 am : link
The scouts seem pretty unanimous that Luis Medina has the best "arm" in the Yankees minors, but that his control has really held him back.

It seems (including last night), that he is finally getting better with control, but it has taken years to fix.

I believe he is Rule 5 eligible this offseason.

What do the Yankees do with Luis Medina this offseason?

Yes, every year Gary gets hurt, Romine plays well for a while before reality sets in and he gets back to normal.

He does not have Gary's arm and he is nowhere near perfect behind the plate. Romine is a backup catcher not a starter. While I don't agree he is the basket case whom you love to demean, he is not as good as the team states. He is what he paid to do, be a competent backup catcher.

I'd think this is probably Romine's last year with NYY. He's making $1.8M right now, probably wants a raise from there in UFA. NYY can get the same or better production from Higgy, who has years of control left and more upside.

With the way Romine has swung the bat this season (well above his career numbers and well above his long-term ceiling, UFA couldn't be coming at a better time for him. If he can get a 3 year $10-12m deal from someone he should take the money and runnnnnn.

What do the Yankees do with Luis Medina this offseason?

Medina's issues are twofold. One is physical. Consensus is he falls off the mound in his follow-through, which impacts his control and his consistency. The other is mental. He has the unfortunate habit of turning adversity (a BB, a HBP, a fielding error) into catastrophe. This last start he didn't do that, he dealt with three fielding errors and still put up a zero. His BB rate has come down too, though it remains high. These last five starts have been the best month or so of his pro career, so the hope is that he's turned a corner.

IDK about the Rule 5 draft. It'd be tough to risk losing that arm, but the list of teams that could keep him in the bigs for a season is pretty small. Probably Baltimore and Miami, end of list.

I think he wants somewhere he can at least plausibly compete for a job, even if he doesn't go in the favorite. That's probably a less competitive team.

bothers me to see what the Padres did with our catcher Luis Torrens.

Sure, he was horrible in the majors in 2017, but the Padres would not return him to the Yankees under Rule 5 and now have a great future player.

This year Torrens is on their 40 man roster, and is their every day catcher in AA. He is hitting .300 and has thrown out an amazing 48% of runners attempting to steal on him (in about 85 attempts).

I would just hate to see another team get a free pickup of Medina in the offseason.

It's a shitty rule. Torrens lost a full year of development time. For hitters in particular, getting thrown in over your head can devastate progression. It is to his credit that it didn't destroy him as a prospect, but it still creates some shitty incentives that are not player-friendly. It's tough to say for sure, but there's a good chance Torrens would be a full-time big leaguer by now if he had stayed healthy.
Yes, that Torrens thing is very annoying
Greg from LI : 8/8/2019 9:38 am : link
A team that isn't even trying to win games can easily tote a kid around on their big league roster for an entire year and then send him back to the minors to develop. A total abuse of the Rule V system.

Davis is utterly untradeable, just an idiotic contract. He didn't want to be there either, he was begging the Cardinals to get in the same financial wheelhouse, but they (wisely) refused.

Hyde was right to yank Davis from that game. He was really, really dogging it. Wasn't chasing foul balls into foul territory, barely went after the ball that got under his glove on one of Maybin's hits, and even on a routine put out @ 1B, he just lazily flipped his glove up near his body to lazily catch the ball without even reaching for it on a LeMahieu groundout.

That guy is really something else. At least fucking hustle and bust it out there if you're not going to be able to hit. Terrible look for him.
