Giants are buying what their coach, GM are selling

"These guys ain't taking stuff from nobody. You're either buying in, or we're going to do something about it," said center Jon Halapio, who joined the Giants early in the 2016 season. "I think it's coming from everybody is just sick of losing.

"Obviously, something has to change. We have to take control of the locker room. We have to be closer. Not saying the past guys didn't do a good job, but I think that is where the leadership is growing now because everybody is sick of losing. Something has got to change, and that is why the leaders are stepping up now."

The dominant voices in the locker room are Saquon Barkley, Eli Manning, Russell Shepard, Zeitler, Zak DeOssie, Alec Ogletree, Bethea, Michael Thomas and Janoris Jenkins. Only Manning and DeOssie predate Shurmur and Gettleman. They're also the only two players remaining from the Giants' Super Bowl team in 2011.

Beckham, Harrison, Pierre-Paul and Collins were leaders, by choice or organically, in previous years. This season has a different feel.

Culture club: Giants are buying what their coach, GM are selling - ( New Window )
Good article especially for the negative Ranaan

At this point, I like what Gettlemen is trying to do: rebuild both lines, loaded up on CB's, and when in doubt, bring in high character guys.

The Golden Tate situation is concerning though. We really need him in the line up to complete.

Culture is important and I also think that chemistry is very important. Who these players are and how they work together is going to determine their success.
A cold chill goes down my spine

Thinking of OBJ and JPP as our locker room leaders.
Doesn't Jenkins predate Shurmer and Gettleman as well?

?
OBJ
Gman11 : 8/8/2019 11:00 am : link
might be a great receiver, but he was hard guy to root for. With the peeing like a dog TD celebration, proposing to a kicking net and banging his head "to get fired up," it shows that the guy is basically an idiot.

When the TDs didn't happen as much the other stuff was hard to take.
Jenkins is also

From the previous regime. But aside from that little miss, good article!
I am glad to see this change happening in the locker room..

too many people focus solely on "talent" and not on what it truly takes to put a winning team together. If you do not have true leaders and instead have a collection of individuals... then you will get more of what we have seen for the past 7 yrs.

Finally, people here were freaking out over so many of the personnel moves. As if we were breaking up some kind of dynasty or a team that was 1 or two players away from being a contender.
Of course...

this begs the question - are Gettleman and Shurmur the right people to lead the culture change?

Agreed. The roster overhaul is unreal. It is early but I think the 2 main concerns are Edge rusher and deep threat WR. I am hopeful we can get pressure as I am a huge ZO Carter fan and think he can be a star. I wanted Josh Allen but that didn't happen. WR and ER will be priorities in the 2020 offseason.

Obviously, but that would apply to anyone that was hired into the positions.
I'm not 100% sold on PS, but I will say

I like how the team kept fighting down the stretch even after being mathematically eliminated.
Waht do you expect the players to say?
since1925 : 8/8/2019 12:09 pm : link
Players know where their bread is buttered. Actors always praise the director. Players praise the coach and GM.

No player in his right mind is going to come out and say that the coach can't tell the difference between his butt and a hole in the ground.
This group hasn’t lost a game yet. Or several games.
RDJR : 8/8/2019 12:42 pm : link
That’s the real test of leadership and team. I’m sure they will be tested on that front.
guess those "Talk Is Cheap, Play the Game" shirts aren't coming back

That was seriously the dumbest slogan I've ever heard, though I think they won the Super Bowl that season.
Yes they did

The team also played better without the Diva in the lineup

Shockey used to openly criticize Clawfin.
Talent wins games
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/8/2019 2:02 pm : link
Leaders are not always the most talented players. Too often we tend to assume that leaders are also the best players. Or that the most talented players also have to be leaders. That is certainly not the case.
How about these guys win some games first?
shockeyisthebest8056 : 8/8/2019 2:24 pm : link
If "culture" is going to help the left tackle block better or the secondary cover well, then that's great. I have a funny feeling though that when the Giants get more talent, they'll win more, and then all these people can crow about how the "culture" made a difference.
Ah the realists are out in force
Joey in VA : 8/8/2019 2:28 pm : link
To chase out the Pollyannas..errr Optimists. I like what I've seen and heard from this bunch, it's finally a group I can really root for and pull for. I always want them to win obviously, but that last few years we had some tough to stomach guys.
Even talented teams can fracture if they go through a rough patch.
Klaatu : 8/8/2019 3:32 pm : link
No doubt the 2019 Giants will go through their share of rough patches, but effective leadership and a strong, team-first culture can keep them from coming apart at the seams if things go too far south. They need to hang together and avoid any infighting. Odds are this year will be fraught with frustration and disappointment. How they deal with that will tell us a lot about the team going forward.

Yep
they can't win any games yet
UConn4523 : 8/8/2019 3:40 pm : link
there aren't any to play (until tonight). Never understood that stance. They are asked questions, they give answers.

Let the over analysis ensue.
If nothing else
OBJRoyal : 8/8/2019 4:31 pm : link
DG has added more players that seem to love the game and love to get to work. Barkley last year, and Zeitler this year to name a few.

Let's hope it adds up to a few more win and moves the team in the right direction
