Cespedes on a one year deal is a good thing motivation wise. Give me
Ces - conforto - nimmo in outfield, McNeil at 3b, Rosario at ss, cano at 2nd, polar bear at 1b and Ramos at catcher. Throw in JD Davis and lowrie on bench and to me you have the makings of a pretty impressive roster of its ever healthy.
Resign wheeler get a couple bullpen pieces and tell Wilpons to calm the hell down and sign the checks.
resign Wheeler. Love the super rotation, add a piece to the bullpen, and we're in good shape next year. Not much else to do. I would also like a better back-up catcher, and a defensive first outfielder who can hit more than Keon Broxton/Juan Lagares
for any team let alone this one. His defense was a huge part of his game. By the time he gets back he will have not seen major league pitching in almost 2 years. He will be 2 years older than we last saw him, and probably even heavier from over a year of rehabbing off his feet. Get as much as you can from insurance or a buyout (or voiding the deal) and move on. Let Conforto and Nimmo play in the corners where they belong and find a real CF.

It is tempting. I don't think Cespedes is the starter if he comes back with the Mets next year though. I wouldn't count him out in a contract year though. Either way, you come into camp with Nimmo in CF and Conforto in RF, you basically have three deserving players competing for the LF job in that scenario Dom, JD Davis, and Ces. The losers make super subs along with Lowrie and that is a VERY deep team
I honestly think this could be the easiest Mets offseason ever. 1.) Re-Sign Wheeler (backload the deal a little). 2.) Add a reliever.
Gio has gotten hurt a couple times for the first time in his career. In his 12 innings Kimbrel has a near 6 era. Keuchel went into tonight with a 3.86 era, that's not far off his usual and not bad for missing ST, changing leagues, etc. There's a reason every team has spring training.
I loved pre-injury Joe Panik and always have an affinity for guys who don't strike out and play good d, but it's hard to see how he'll be much of an upgrade over Guillorme or Hech or Lagares (with Mcneil at 2b). But who knows. Especially with Nimmo getting close to rehabbing I'd just put Mcneil at 2B most of the time.
I'm not the least bit excited about adding Panik. He's been one of the worst players in baseball (negative fWar) over his last near 800 ABs. No ability to get on base, no power, solid defense at least, but don't we have a bunch of guys like that?
Would much rather give the playing time to someone who has hit recently for our AAA team rather than a guy who last had a good season at the plate in 2015.
There's been complaining about automatic outs at the bottom of the lineup. Panik has been close to an automatic out for two years.

zero risk unless he's stealing playing from someone who is on fire which is a risk for anyone.
We have limited ABs to go around and are in a tight race Â
every AB matters. The shitty play of Panik is over a much larger sample size than the underwhelming play of Guillorme and the zero sample size of Tejada and Herrera this year.
It just looks like Panik is the option (out of a bunch of sub-optimal options granted) least likely to give us a positive result.

Once and if Lowrie, Cano, or probably Smith come back, if he's still shitty, he's gone.
Panik stealing at-bats from Guillorme or Hechavarria is not something high on my list of concerns down the stretch.
It's not that big of a deal, but it's a move that Â
if they sign Panik I hope it's only as an insurance bat on the bench in the event Guillorme doesn't hit at all. Hech should be a bench player and nothing more.
Also hope Rajai Davis is on his way up for Altherr. That would be a good move for the bench and CF until Nimmo is ready.

If they do sign him, I would hope it's with a pan like this, but I'd suspect Callaway starts him just about every day until Nimmo is back.
Guillorme, Lagares, ect. have had chances over the years. They aren’t good hitters. Panik is a vet that plays good D and has a history of hitting at a high level at points in his career (still only 28). No I don’t think he’s going to turn into a star again, but there’s no downside in giving him a week or two run. When Nimmo returns, McNeil is moving to 2B anyway.
Cabrera has been awful all year too but the Nats made a similar move.
Guillorme only debuted last year and got 10 starts (67 abs) Â
this year he's gotten about 5 starts (31 abs). That is far from "having chances over the years". He is 3 months older than Alonso and has fewer starts than Alonso made in April alone.
Lagares has almost 2000 career at bats and is 6 years older than Guillorme. The 2 could not be in more different positions.
doesn't deserve to be lumped in with guys like Lagares, Herrera and Tejada. He's legit never had a real chance to prove he can hit. Granted, the Mets aren't in position to give him one this year without exploring other options BUT it's another example of why last year was such a disaster. Jose Reyes played over him... Jack Reinheimer!!

Rather than Rajai Davis, I'd give Arismendy Alcantara a shot
I'd have no issue with either, but Davis' defense would lead me to give him first shot. Past 2 years he's been neutral in CF (0 DRS) over almost 1000 innings. Which statistically would even be an upgrade over Lagares this year. He's got 19 steals at AAA this year so presumably he can still move at least a little bit, and we know he's had a ton of experience on winning teams in that bench role.
Good player who was never the same after back injury
I’ve seen him a lot and he is still a plus defender. He also makes contact at the plate. If Mickey picks his spots to start JP, he can potentially be an asset offensively. Also has a WS ring. Never underestimate the importance of a guy like that on young players like Alonso.
Solid pickup.
I like the idea of a contact hitter in the 8 hole Â
He is still young and maybe the change of scenery will be good for him. He is obviously not the same player he was before the injury, but at 28, playing home in front of family and friends can be a good thing.
I thought I read somewhere that the Mets were intent to keep McNeil in the OF? If that is the case, this is really a no brainer to bring in Panik. If he sucks, then he can simply be released.
Mets are leaving McNeil in the OF because the OF options are absolutely horrendous. 38 year old Rajai Davis and Aaron Altherr (4 for 53 on the season) shouldn't even be in the discussion for a team trying to make the playoffs and yet here we are.
Davis may be ok as a 5th OF'er the last 2 years he's been a neutral CF Â
but then realized you were talking about Rajai Davis and not JD Davis.
Not related, but cheapest stubhub prices to get into Citifield were $25 last time I looked. Was $12 before the Marlins series. Crowd is going to be amped up tonight. If the Mets roll this weekend, the hype train will really be leaving the station.
his wRC+ those 2 seasons...72 and 50. He's been really, really bad.
I know but how many 5th OF'ers (who can play a decent CF) do you think there are who are also good hitters? Just about any CF who is a league average hitter and solid defender is a starter.
There are exactly 29 total CF'ers this season with a RC 90+. Of those 29, just 15 are also graded as positive defenders. Btw hilariously Cesar Puello is 1 of those 15. CF ranked by RC (minimum 50 PA) - ( New Window )
are speaking as if they have 4 healthy solid OFers. They don't so "5th OF" is a strawman. He's been worth negative .1 fWAR over his last 221 MLB games, so yeah there are plenty of "5th" OFers who could offer that even if I stick with the "5th OF" premise (which I can't with Nimmo ?? and Dom ??).

Should also note that Rajai Davis has been a below average hitter in Triple-A this year. He has .743 OPS, league average is .793.

Not hilarious at all, Puello was touted as a rare 5-tool player and was on the track to putting it all together and reaching the majors in 2013 before Biogenesis.

The top 3 right now are obviously Conforto, Mcneil, JD Davis, but all should ideally be in corners. Lagares is the clear #4 assuming they do intend to keep Mcneil in the OF vs. 2B.
So even without Nimmo & Dom factored in, I still fail to see how Davis is anything more than a 5th OF / backup CF / pinch runner. I wish they had a better option but he's better than Altherr.
Any hope of any of Nimmo, Lowrie, Dom making it back?
Boom.
2.) McNeil 2B
3.) Alonso 1B
4.) Conforto RF
5.) Davis LF
6.) Rosario SS
7.) Ramos C
8.) Frazier 3B

Offseason over.
Do love that all of the recent signings are local kids. Good vibes.
For all the exhausting Keuchel talk all year.... Guy is 3-5 with an ERA near 5, FIP 5.23
Glad we passed.

But the guy puts the ball in play and can talk a walk so he could be a pesky type of player, even off the bench over what we have.
Braves and Phillies lose.
Daniel Jones?
Best Mets off day ever? lol

If he can still play defense at an above average level, I think this will be a great signing even if he doesn't hit for high average or power.
I would want to get him in the starting lineup tonight vs Strasburg with Stroman a ground ball pitcher on the mound.

Sucks for him, but I think this is the right move. LG can back up at SS and Hech couldn't buy a hit for the past month.
