He is still young and maybe the change of scenery will be good for him. He is obviously not the same player he was before the injury, but at 28, playing home in front of family and friends can be a good thing.
I thought I read somewhere that the Mets were intent to keep McNeil in the OF? If that is the case, this is really a no brainer to bring in Panik. If he sucks, then he can simply be released.
Mets are leaving McNeil in the OF because the OF options are absolutely horrendous. 38 year old Rajai Davis and Aaron Altherr (4 for 53 on the season) shouldn't even be in the discussion for a team trying to make the playoffs and yet here we are.
Davis may be ok as a 5th OF'er the last 2 years he's been a neutral CF Â
but then realized you were talking about Rajai Davis and not JD Davis.
Not related, but cheapest stubhub prices to get into Citifield were $25 last time I looked. Was $12 before the Marlins series. Crowd is going to be amped up tonight. If the Mets roll this weekend, the hype train will really be leaving the station.
his wRC+ those 2 seasons...72 and 50. He's been really, really bad.
I know but how many 5th OF'ers (who can play a decent CF) do you think there are who are also good hitters? Just about any CF who is a league average hitter and solid defender is a starter.
There are exactly 29 total CF'ers this season with a RC 90+. Of those 29, just 15 are also graded as positive defenders. Btw hilariously Cesar Puello is 1 of those 15. CF ranked by RC (minimum 50 PA) - ( New Window )
are speaking as if they have 4 healthy solid OFers. They don't so "5th OF" is a strawman. He's been worth negative .1 fWAR over his last 221 MLB games, so yeah there are plenty of "5th" OFers who could offer that even if I stick with the "5th OF" premise (which I can't with Nimmo ?? and Dom ??).

Should also note that Rajai Davis has been a below average hitter in Triple-A this year. He has .743 OPS, league average is .793.

Not hilarious at all, Puello was touted as a rare 5-tool player and was on the track to putting it all together and reaching the majors in 2013 before Biogenesis.

The top 3 right now are obviously Conforto, Mcneil, JD Davis, but all should ideally be in corners. Lagares is the clear #4 assuming they do intend to keep Mcneil in the OF vs. 2B.
So even without Nimmo & Dom factored in, I still fail to see how Davis is anything more than a 5th OF / backup CF / pinch runner. I wish they had a better option but he's better than Altherr.
If he can still play defense at an above average level, I think this will be a great signing even if he doesn't hit for high average or power.
I would want to get him in the starting lineup tonight vs Strasburg with Stroman a ground ball pitcher on the mound.

I am hoping there will be a new thread for tonight's game?

Sucks for him, but I think this is the right move. LG can back up at SS and Hech couldn't buy a hit for the past month.
