Connelly was very impressive

RobCarpenter : 8/8/2019 10:12 pm
And Goodson will be lucky to make the team. He didnít see the field until the second half.

Meanwhile Connelly had 4 solo tackles and was in the mix on nearly every play. Itís only preseason but I havenít seen a Giants LB make plays like that in forever.

He's considerably bigger than Davis

Scratch that, not exactly "considerably", but larger nonetheless

I think he had a ridiculously fast 10 yard time at the combine. Shows his explosiveness. Reminds me a bit of Sean Lee.

the two ILB positions are interchangeable so Connelly very well could push Goodson off the roster as Ogletree's backup.

I was very concern about Goodson.

They looked decent....but still not sure if Davis and/or Connerly.....are ready for prime time.

There is something about Connerly that offers hope

Havenít watched after the delay yet minus a series or 2 but Davis seemed to be around most every play and Connolly didnít banks say his biggest problem was that he tends to get caught in the wash during the plays? Iím guessing that didnít happen much last night

He looked like a football player.

After years of watching the Cowboys trot out good LB after good LB, the Giants may actually have a playmaker at LB.
Connelly's not pushing Goodson off
giants#1 : 8/9/2019 8:16 am : link
If they keep 4 ILB (8 LBs total), there's still room for Goodson. The top 3 ILB right now are Ogletree, Davis, and Connelly.

And, FWIW, Davis and Connelly are listed as $LB on the "official" depth chart, whereas Ogletree and Goodson are ILB.

That said, if they're not as set on 4 ILB and 4 OLB then Carlock definitely took a step towards Goodson's spot (the top 4 OLB spots are likely locks: Carter, Martin, Golden, and Ximines). I thought Jonathan Anderson flashed a few times last night too.
I mentioned in draft review
JonC : 8/9/2019 8:19 am : link
the immediate thing that leaps off the screen with him is his ability to read keys and diagnose plays. He finds the ball very quickly, very few false steps. This alone puts him well ahead of most young players. Coach him up, get him used to the NFL game speed, and get him stronger.
I think that Davis will start with Ogeltree, but Connelly and Davis

I was keying on him and he was timing things very well to get to the ball carrier or at least to get a piece to slow the runner down.

He looks like he has those instincts you can't really teach.

Exactly my take, section. He gets into the mix for sure--and disrupts--but is he stout enough to consistently make plays in the wash of much bigger OL? Love his heart, motor, and head for the game.

He was so quick to the ball a couple times I was trying to figure out if he guessed correctly or picked up on the play by reading formation and snap movement.

Agree both your takes, and to yours, FatMan, I did the same. On play action, he read and very quickly dropped into coverage, usually in the direction where the ball went in medium/underneath routes. On run plays, he read and attacked. Very seldom wrong and always very quick.
Ha!

Why does everyone keep saying he needs to get stronger?

As to Goodson - he is third string now based on snaps last night. And Tauaefa has more upside than him.

Goodson is a poor fit for Bettcher's scheme and I'd be surprised if he makes the team. The fact that he didn't see the field until the second half speaks volumes to me about his likelihood of being on the roster.
Thomas Davis..

was drafted as a safety, moved to linebacker in training camp, then moved back to safety to start the season because of injuries to that unit.

I think either late his rookie year or the following year he was moved to LB full time.

Goodson not seing the playing field until second half may be because coaches already know what they have in him. Might want to give youngsters ample time to show what they have and have learned.

He's a third string player. For a veteran that's not a good place to be.

I can't think of another player in the same boat on the Giants - that is, a veteran they like who they didn't put into the game until the second half. I think he was put in during the second half b/c they are telling him he is on the bubble and he has to impress them to have a job.

Plus, Shurmur wasn't exactly effusive in describing Goodson in his commments today:

Quote:

Q: Where does everything stand with B.J. Goodson? He was a guy that has started for you in the past and yesterday we saw he was running with the 3ís.

He ran a 4.66 40. I'd say that's about average for an inside lb. What sets him apart is that he's so instinctive. He diagnoses a play instantly and just goes.

#Giants need to get that LB Connely out of the game, he's too good to be playing with 2nd string players. He might be the best LB the Giants have had in years. #NFL #preseason

And this is why Boylhart's penchant for hyperbole is bothersome. This should be great feedback, but Boylhart tosses around superlatives with such little restraint that it's impossible to take him seriously.
From what I've read/seen, he seems like

He clearly has run stopping abilities that will work in the NFL.

His run defense reminds me Jasper Brinkley. Hopefully we can get more out of him in pass defense.
