And Goodson will be lucky to make the team. He didn’t see the field until the second half.
Meanwhile Connelly had 4 solo tackles and was in the mix on nearly every play. It’s only preseason but I haven’t seen a Giants LB make plays like that in forever.
And, FWIW, Davis and Connelly are listed as $LB on the "official" depth chart, whereas Ogletree and Goodson are ILB.
That said, if they're not as set on 4 ILB and 4 OLB then Carlock definitely took a step towards Goodson's spot (the top 4 OLB spots are likely locks: Carter, Martin, Golden, and Ximines). I thought Jonathan Anderson flashed a few times last night too.
Yes, but your assuming they don't cut him and pick up someone else off the waiver wire.
He's a third string player. For a veteran that's not a good place to be.
I can't think of another player in the same boat on the Giants - that is, a veteran they like who they didn't put into the game until the second half. I think he was put in during the second half b/c they are telling him he is on the bubble and he has to impress them to have a job.
Plus, Shurmur wasn't exactly effusive in describing Goodson in his commments today:
Q: Where does everything stand with B.J. Goodson? He was a guy that has started for you in the past and yesterday we saw he was running with the 3’s.
A: Yeah, well, he had a couple days where he wasn’t out in practice and he’s getting back in there and he is in that linebacker crew competing to be on the team.

He ran a 4.66 40. I'd say that's about average for an inside lb. What sets him apart is that he's so instinctive. He diagnoses a play instantly and just goes.
Nine on the roster, two more on the practice squad.

Wonder whether he is fast enough long-term.

Didn't he also have an elite 10 yard split?

#Giants need to get that LB Connely out of the game, he's too good to be playing with 2nd string players. He might be the best LB the Giants have had in years. #NFL #preseason
And this is why Boylhart's penchant for hyperbole is bothersome. This should be great feedback, but Boylhart tosses around superlatives with such little restraint that it's impossible to take him seriously.

Pat Shurmur says #Giants have no clarity yet on the status of Golden Tate’s appeal. Also said rookie LB Ryan Connelly has proven “he belongs on the field,” which is why he is seeing first-team reps now with Ogletree sidelined
His run defense reminds me Jasper Brinkley. Hopefully we can get more out of him in pass defense.
