Obviously it's VERY early but between the reports from camp and tonight's performance he could really end up being a steal considering where we picked him. Fingers crossed!
It was easy to do because he lined up at LCB for a few drives coming towards our seats, and he returned one KO and accepted a TB for a second KO from our near EZ.
His terrific int was quite close to us, with the play coming towards us as well.
His athleticism jumps off the field in all aspects of his play. He was more impressive than Baker or Love, even though Love also played quite well at nickle corner in the slot the few plays I focused on him.
Ballentine moves suddenly and fluidly and is a full metal jacket NFL player so far as his tools are concerned. It's easy to predict he'll become our best late round pick since Ahmad Bradshaw in 2007. IMO he will be a + starter in this league, sooner rather than later.
Baker I thought struggled, and not just because of his PI penalty. He may be trying too hard right now. Chris Slayton is a very large and powerful interior DL. We might have something with him too. Connelly can close on ball carriers, nice burst to the ball. Carlock might prove to be a UDFA gem. He looks bigger than I thought he'd be.
On offense our backup OL stinks. No holes in the run game, oodles of penalties of all sorts, but they did offer some pass protection. They blocked well on one screen pass play too.
Conrad caught the ball effortlessly, he's a natural hands catcher.
Preseason or not, QB Jones looked like an NFL player. He still worries me that his throws don't have a lot of zip on them, maybe not even enough zip, but he's accurate and just seems remarkably on top.of his reads for a rook.
Again, a larger Joe Montana seems his possible upside and who wouldn't be thrilled with that? Heck, overjoyed and amazed that so many pundits didn't see it in him?
The temp was comfortable, the crowd courteous and we'll behaved, it was a fine atmosphere to introduce my 17 yo daughter to a live game.
But the chatter of the night was about Corey Ballentine for Giants fans and even Jets fans.
I was at the game tonight and focused on the kid. Â

Could be a steal. Greedy Williams looked good and still wonder why the Giants went with Baker over him? Hopefully this picks doesn't come back to haunt them especially since they gave up picks for Baker..

It really is purely about Williams' issue with tackling.

Greedy Williams was beaten badly for a TD in that game.
you'll get from Greedy in a nutshell. On one play, the QB overthrew the man he was covering and he started trash-talking and thumping his chest. Just a couple plays later, he blew a coverage and left his man wide open for an easy TD.
I didn't see him celebrating - but I did see him point to a safety like it was that guy's fault.

How did he look good?
You’re better off just ignoring prdave. Though I know you are aware of his awfulness. Aside from that, he was bizarrely pumping up Greedy for months leading up to the draft. He was obsessed with him. And he still hasn’t stopped shaking his head that the Giants didn’t take him.
I wouldn’t be surprised if prdave reaches out to Greedy and Alex Cora to see if they’d attend his big sweet 16 birthday bash coming up

More than one draft podcast talked about seeing a trend on film of him quitting on the play when he got beat.
Fuck.. Eli Apple. That guy did not belong playing in an NFL secondary and I also think the talent around him at Ohio State covered up for his weaknesses.
5 min after we drafted Apple I started watching as much video of him as I could. You could immediately see that he had no idea how to play the position. Most of his mistakes were made within the first two seconds of the ball being snapped. That says a lot since most people are keyed in on his lack of ball skills at the end of the play.
So, watching Eli Apple right after we drafted him I had that look on my face like the owner of the baseball team had in the movie Trouble With The Curve. You know... when they drafted that prospect and he gets to the practice field and they realize that he actually cant hit major league caliber pitching.

Wow, this is the post of the day for me, Lou. I come here to this site primarily to read insight like this rather than guys whining and wishing life were different. Thanks again.....
Thanks 5BS! I'm pleased you liked the post although I did Â
get away from the thread topic of specifically Ballentine...
Through the generosity of a regular here, I got 2 excellent free tickets in section 129. I took my daughter to her first ever live game and we had a great time.
I did my best to observe as being live at a game allows one to do - to focus on players and not the ball. It's always easier to focus on DBs or WRs, and since we have 3 rookies at DB, that's where I focused. Ballentine was the easiest to focus on by pure chance, but also the one I was most interested in, given the recent camp buzz. After watching enough of him to be "confident" in my flash judgement of his skills, I switched to Baker and Love intermittently.
All three of them were on multiple squads, IE kickoff coverage and/or KR and base and sub package defenses. There was a lot of material to absorb re those 3.
Otherwise, I just got a sense of guys like Chris Slayton. While he doesn't tip the scale like Lawrence (few do) he is still a very imposing figure who is not just massive but also well built. His 315# or so is not fat around the waist, Syracuse must have a very good weight training program there and most importantly it appears Slayton took full advantage of it.
I'd sum that up perhaps by saying at the very least he appears to be a young man seriously committed to playing in the NFL.
We had too little of that under Reese and Ross, I suppose.
His terrific int was quite close to us, with the play coming towards us as well.

I think his PI was a pretty savvy play. He grabbed the wrist and let go, where the BJ couldn't see. He had gotten away with it in real-time.

But if it was anything like the Cora is the best manager alive schtick, I'm glad I missed it!!
smh. Smfh....
is that he has great ball awareness, the other flaws can be worked on
^This. He's very fluid, has long arms, and flips his hips with ease. He can also run with WRs.

two things that hard to teach.
