What did not go well, last night?

George from PA : 8/9/2019 6:36 am
Besides the Jets defense, which I expected more pressure.

I know we are all somewhat giddy, but rather look at the area where the Giant can improve.....

The most concerning was the Giants own pass rush. Carter looks bigger and contained the edge well, but I was not overly impressed by his passrush moves. Xmen, besides a decent bull rush that he took the LT right into the QB, he seemed overmatch and is not ready. I did not see M.Golden? I hope he is our secret weapon.

I did not see any pressure from the inside either. Now, I did not see Hill. I only noticed Lawrence on the run plays and he left quckly.

None of the RBs overly impress. Gallman seemed to secure the backup roll, for now. Barkley did not play, so I am not overly concern.

The Jets TE seemed open on everyplay.

The return guys let the ball touch the ground too much and no one seemed as explosive as Coleman

The Giants definitely lost the battle of the punters
It didn't help the running game that these guys didn't play
ZogZerg : 8/9/2019 6:44 am : link
OT Wheeler(back)
OT Mihalik (burner)
OT Asafo-Adjei (concussion)

I was surprised the passing game went so well.
Noodle leg

Tilley Dixon is still the punter. Cant believe they cant find anyone better.
I am with you. I want a punter when
George from PA : 8/9/2019 6:52 am : link
Stuck by the endzone to boom it out of there.

Right now, the Giants get stuck dowm by their own endzone and forced to punt....they are basiclly giving up a FG.
Too much looking in the backfield
Mike in NY : 8/9/2019 6:57 am : link
Our defenders were getting sucked up too easily leaving players wide open in man coverage. Have to recognize pick plays better. Run blocking by backup OL was awful. Need more pass rush.

Dixon was 10th in average last year and 7th in net average.
I didnt think

Lorenzo Carter did that well, and i have concerns about him. I hope i'm wrong
I only watched the first half so far
Mark from Jersey : 8/9/2019 7:43 am : link
but the pass rush was bad. I knew it would be but I expected at least some flashes. I know they are keeping the defense simple but that was my biggest concern first game. I dont think that is something you can fix like blown assignments. We will have to blitz a lot this year if our front 4 cannot create any pressure at all.
1st string def couldn't get off the field
ron mexico : 8/9/2019 7:51 am : link
I have a feeling we are going to see a lot of third and longs converted against us.
Love was absolutely brutal

didn't fair well against the Jets 1st string - only one series.

Team is a work in progress. One that has a chance to get better as year goes on.
Ballentine

No tackle so good.
No. Pass. Rush.
arniefez : 8/9/2019 8:23 am : link
No NFL defense can function with no pass rush. The Giants are already playing for 2020. This team has no chance of competing this year.
Starters barely played, not much to go on
JonC : 8/9/2019 8:24 am : link
Jones obviously threw clean spirals and tossed accurate passes.

Bright spots on defense in Lawrence, Connelly, Baker, and Ballantine. Ballantine, in particular, while making some glaring mistakes also flashed instincts and plenty of raw tools.

Got three starters from their first round picks this year, and probably more.
Sorry, I forgot the OP

!
Thought Love had a very good overall game.
barens : 8/9/2019 9:28 am : link
He looked like the rookie that he is on the first drive, but he settled down nicely, and ended up making plays all over the field.

Very hard to judge the pass rush right off the bat. Gonna need more sample size, and I'm sure the D will need some time to gel.

Yeah, I hear ya. But to be fair, if Peppers makes the pick that he should have we are all having a different discussion around that today.

I was concerned (am concerned) about the pass rush as well. But I am thinking at this point in time we are taking a look at what our base pass rush looks like without any blitz packages installed yet. I am guessing Bettcher needs to see what he has from a base rush perspective and make adjustments there before he creates his blitz packages. That said, I won't panic yet.
Peppers is much quicker and more active
JonC : 8/9/2019 9:30 am : link
then Collins, it was quickly apparent.

Yes with his rollerball specials he somehow ended up with decent stats but if you actually think he’s a good P I disagree. Just another example of why football isn’t a stats game.
little confusion in the secondary

Mach?
What didn't go well last night and into today...
Canton : 8/9/2019 2:25 pm : link
We're the Daniel Jones detractors, whom had no ammo today, to shoot down the 6th pick of the draft.

Awwww, poo-poo little fuckers.
Really disappointed in the backup RBs.
Brown Recluse : 8/9/2019 2:36 pm : link
Gallman continues to be just a guy. I was hoping Perkins would step up and show something but he looked awful. Rod Smith looks slow and stiff. Hilliman looked pretty decent and then got hurt.
surprised I haven't read more about Connelly
PhilSimms15 : 8/9/2019 2:47 pm : link
I thought he was arguably the best Giants defender last night. Banks said last night that Connelly has a nose for the ball and is always around said ball. I know he doesn't have prototypical size but he seem to overcome this with hustle, speed, and aggressiveness.

Anyone focus on Connelly?

The OP asked what went WRONG with last night (did not go right) so you won’t see Connelly’s name on this thread because he was RIGHT ON!
wouldn't overeact ove rthe blown coverages

Bethea wasn't in there. Love was the culprit. But, he is having to learn several positions - there's a lot on his plate.

RE: comments about Carter - all vanilla last night, just run upfield and try and get past the tackle.
