Looks Like Lauletta Is Odd Man Out

clatterbuck : 8/9/2019 9:18 am
even if he continues to play well. Interesting question, though, is whether Giants invest a roster spot on a third QB. Tanney showed why Giants re-signed him and gave him a decent contract. And Davis Webb showed why he probably won't make the Jets roster.
It's
AcidTest : 8/9/2019 9:20 am : link
too early to make any decision between Tanney and Lauletta. We need to see the whole preseason. The Giants liked Tanney enough to resign him, but Lauletta was a fourth round pick made by the current regime just last year. The both played well last night.
Too early to make anything definitive
George from PA : 8/9/2019 9:21 am : link
Would also hate to hand the Eagle a decent backup....
I doubt that
Now Mike in MD : 8/9/2019 9:23 am : link
if Jones continues to play well, the team will see him as a viable backup, which is the only role Tanney would have. And if Lauletta continues to play well, the team will see him as the future backup to Jones next year after Eli retires
The irony..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/9/2019 9:23 am : link
of the Jets cutting Webb to sign Lauletta if he is cut would be outstanding!!
Jones is the clear #2, so the question becomes what do you want
PatersonPlank : 8/9/2019 9:25 am : link
in your #3 (if there is a #3). Tanney gives you vet experience just in case something bad happens. Lauletta doesn't, and with Jones here Lauletta doesn't give you the youth/future thing either. I agree he is the odd man out.

Didn't Shurmur say he likes 3 in the QB room? I think he sees Tanney as good in the room QB.
To me the question is
JonC : 8/9/2019 9:28 am : link
is Lauletta a prospect they can develop and flip for a draft pick. If yes, I keep him over Tanney.
...
christian : 8/9/2019 9:34 am : link
Regardless, it's absolutely obvious the difference between Jones and the prospects the last 2 pre seasons.

The two characters drafted before couldn't do the things Jones did last night after many more chances.

3 QBs on the 53. The Giants see something in Tanney long term that

Fans can’t see. He is a good mentor. He is still eligible for the practice squad and the Giants May cut him to allow him to try to latch on somewhere else but put him on the practice squad if he isn’t picked up. They can pay him more than the minimum and still keep Lauletta.

Tanney will end up as a good coach at the pro or college level.

I agree with this actually. I think that's why Tanney played as long as he did (and when he did). I would not count out Lauletta at all as the backup to Jones. He looked pretty good and he was playing with the bottom feeders.

Not sure about the PS analysis, but I agree with you on the mentor thing.

During OTAs, and again last night with Bruce Beck, the question was put to DJ, "Have you been benefitting from Eli and his experience?" On BOTH occasions, DJ answered with Alex Tanney first, adding in Eli in the 'room' as almost an after thought. I think it's partly Eli not buying in to a last season.
I still think that Tanney has no place on this team
Bill L : 8/9/2019 10:27 am : link
Last year they needed a vet number 2 to step in if Eli got hurt. That's not the case this year. If Eli got hurt, they would accelerate DJ's development. Jones will never not be #2 (unless he moves up to #1). If Eli is hurt long-term and they feel the need to bring someone in, someone like Tanney will always be around. Lauletta still has developmental potential.

Thats the way I look at it Lauletta could garner a decent
pick especially if he improves o what he did last night .
You know what you got with Tanney who is 32 Kyle has
youth on his side .
Shurmur
mittenedman : 8/9/2019 10:35 am : link
has all 4 of his QBs playing well. Speaks to his reputation as a QB Whisperer.
The Tanney vs. Lauletta comparison is apples and oranges.
Big Blue Blogger : 8/9/2019 10:38 am : link
Assuming the team likes both, the reasons to keep each are very different. So, if both continue to perform well, the decision to keep one or the other (or neither) will say more about the team's strategy for the #3 QB spot (and their guess about whether each would find employment elsewhere) than about their respective talent.

The ideal outcome would be Lauletta on the practice squad, perhaps being paid something close to his full salary as an inducement to stick around and move up to #2 in 2020. Of course, the path to that outcome goes through the waiver wire, and I doubt Lauletta would make it unless his play drops off the next three weeks.

This.

Plus...you never know what the future holds........
Tanney may do a much better job
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 8/9/2019 10:56 am : link
of running the scout team and mimicking other QBs. That is a significant consideration in your third QB.
FWIW, I don't think the 53rd roster spot is that important.
Big Blue Blogger : 8/9/2019 10:57 am : link
Until injuries hit hard, you're going to have a bunch of healthy scratches anyway. It doesn't really matter whether the healthy scratch is a QB or something else.

Let's face it - the guy that a thin team like the Giants bumps to carry a third QB is likely to clear waivers and make it to the practice squad. When that player is needed, they can promote him.
If you are starting your 3rd string QB
Vanzetti : 8/9/2019 11:28 am : link
You are probably not having a good year anyway

So, you keep the guy who is the best value

Tanney was playing against guys who may not even be in the NFL. The only way you keep him is if you think Lauretta is not an NFL QB

This is the right way to look at it.

Right now, I would guess Lauletta has very little appeal around the NFL. But he's a lot younger than Taney and there is still a chance he could have some market value.

Webb
RenierWolfcastle : 8/9/2019 1:23 pm : link
Watching him last night, I couldn't believe that I believed in him at one point in time. So glad we've moved on.
I’m still a huge fan of Eli ... he the best Giant QB ever ...
Spider56 : 8/9/2019 2:40 pm : link
But if all 4 QBs look good, maybe Eli is odd man out ... ouch.
But the best scenario is KL continues to look good ...
Spider56 : 8/9/2019 2:42 pm : link
and is traded to an AFC team.
