Drive by drive notes...

Dan in the Springs : 8/9/2019 2:40 pm
Watching the game for a bit right now, will try to add my notes as I go through the drives. I tend to focus on line play. I'm no expert, so feel free to correct me on what I'm seeing.

Opening drive

1st and 10 - Carter, Dex, Tomlinson, Golden up front. Dex is doubled and big gap between him and Carter, Ogletree a little slow to the gap and the runner is able to pick up four.

2nd and 6 - Same personnel. Dex is doubled, nobody else gets any push pass defensed (almost picked by Peppers)

3rd and 6 - Dex and DT swapped out for Olson Pierre and BJ Hill. Carter, Golden & Hill get good push, Pierre easily handled, the LT releases him and hits Carter. With the pocket collapsing around Darnold he steps up in front of Pierre who has made no progress against the LT then the LG. 3/4 of the DL had good pressure with Pierre virtually useless.

On the back end, Peppers lets the TE past him as though he expected some sort of help which he doesn't get. Good recovery speed from him but too late.

1st and 10, same personnel, Love blitzing with Bethea and Tae Davis covering underneath. Carter with a good rush, gets skinny and his arm up near Darnold makes him move his feet. Love picked up by the blocker but his presence also makes Darnold adjust. Pierre and Hill try a stunt, Hill (over) is able to release but can't get there in time, Pierre (driver) goes nowhere. Golden stonewalled by the RT. Pierre does a nice job tying up blockers then recognizing the pass gets his hand up and just misses the ball.

Davis and Bethea both appear to be playing zone underneath, but the spacing is weird. Also, Davis caught peeking at Darnold lets Crowder spring right for the big gain. Lack of speed from Bethea is evident as he barely keeps up with much larger Davis.

1st and 10 - same personnel. Carter picked up by TE but gets around him, double teams on the tackles. Pierre is so ineffective that the RT is able to peel away again and refocus on Carter, although the quick release means the ball is off before he can assist. Nothing from Golden or Hill, who at least occupies both his blockers.

Davis covering the targeted receiver, mirrors well and closes quickly limiting the pass to a 4 yd gain.

2nd and 6 - Golden gets inside his blocker (TE), and Carter holds his point adequately, DT's double-teamed, Ogletree steps into the gap but makes tackle falling backward, nice little 4 yard gain for the Jets.

3rd and 2 - six blockers vs. 4 man rush with Darnold rolling right, pick play works and you've all seen the outcome there. Hill is able to get past his blocker but the rest are all running laterally on the line. TD Jets.
Giants first drive...
Dan in the Springs : 8/9/2019 2:58 pm : link
1st and 10, Giants in 12 personnel, Ellison and Simonson outside of Remmers. Latimer in motion to the opposite side. On the snap play-action to Gallman, Eli bootleg right. Line stout. Ellison releases vertically and Simonson picks up edge defender. Simonson unable to hold, as defender gets pressure on Eli he releases and Eli checks down to him. Can't see on TV but read that Ellison was wide open downfield, wondering why Eli checked it down if true.

2nd and 7 same personnel, same alignment, same motion from Latimer. 8 man box (safety on the TE side), 7 blockers. On snap Gallman runs behind Hernandez/Pio double-team defender ends up on the ground drawing a hold on Hernandez (declined). Right side of line gets nice push opening a great cutback lane which Gallman recognizes, but Simonson cannot handle the edge defender again who just misses the tackle. Strong safety (unblocked) cleans up. Loss of 1.

3rd and 8 shotgun, Giants in 11 personnel Gallman in backfield. Draw play. Nice stunt recognition and pickup by Solder and Hernandez. Hernandez very strong picks up the stunting edge rusher and pushes him backwards, Pio & Zeitler double-team effective creating space with nice drive, but Remmers' ineffective blocking allows the inside release of edge defender who closes the inside opportunity. Gain of two as Gallman falls forward.
Jets 2nd drive
Dan in the Springs : 8/9/2019 3:09 pm : link
Dex and Tomlinson again in the middle, Peppers loading up the box (8 defenders in tight) with Bethea high. Tomlinson very quick release beats the defender and Carter is unblocked, nice tackle for loss. Double-team puts Big Dex on ground.

2nd & 11, 3 WR split right. Dex blocked 1 on 1 very nice push into the backfield, Tomlinson doubled, Carter and Golden ineffective, quick dump off underneath, Peppers and Ogletree right there with Peppers showing nice burst and form tackling from behind. Love coming up in support but the tackle already made. 3 yd gain.

3rd & 8 - Pierre and Hill back in. Pierre doubled but quickly released, ineffective against the single blocker. Hill and Golden collapse their side of the pocket pretty well but Darnold gets ball off quickly underneath Tae Davis with nice coverage, close and tackle (Ogletree and Baker also coming up in support but not needed). Short gain.

I named my 1st born son Eli. But if Eli becomes Captain Check down again this year, I will be the 1st to call out Daniel Jones.

Siemian you mean. Darnold was out after the first series.
Giants 2nd drive
Dan in the Springs : 8/9/2019 3:45 pm : link
Daniel Jones in shotgun, Gallman in backfield, Ellison a yard behind the tackle. 3 WR. Jets with 2 DL, edge rushers standing up, 3 more in the box. Gallman picks up right edge with Ellison crossing side to meet the same man, quick release. Front is solid, double-teaming each of the tackles and Remmers taking the right edge defender. Quick completion to Latimer for five yards.

2nd and 5, Jones under center. Same personnel, Ellison now tight on the OL. Gallman runs right between Zeitler and Remmers, nice job running through the tackle of the LB and falling forward good job holding strong onto the ball as safety makes a nice play at a strip. Nice run by Gallman, crease was very small but held up just long enough for WG to get through for a first down.

1st and 10, shotgun play-action, Pio starting to get beat to his left, all other OL locked up one-on-one blocking. Nice quick throw to Tate.

1st and 10, 21 personnel with Gallman in offset I and Penny the FB. Tate/Latimer both close inside. Latimer's man showing blitz making 8 man block with safety high over Latimer. Play-action, Jets send six, Penny recognizes blitz on opposite side and picks up nicely, great pocket, plenty of time, all blocks hold up. Tate runs a vertical route drawing deep defenders and creating space for Latimer who crosses behind the mid-level defenders. Latimer makes catch and breaks a tackle for nice gain.

1st and 10, 12 personnel, Tate outside of Latimer in slot, Ellison & Simonson on other side, 8 in the box, 6 on the line, 2 backers short depth. Gallman runs behind Solder (great block) and Ellison makes decent second-level block, unblocked defender closes on Gallman who has to slow behind Ellison, tackled falling forward for six yard gain. Hernandez to second level whiffs run-blitzing LB and ends up on ground. Right side blocking effective, defense completely collapsed no chance to cross the LOS.

2nd and 4, same formation, Jones under center bad run. Solder beat bad by defender quick inside first step, blows up the play. Gallman's "not Saquon Barkley" tries spin move but two strong side defenders there to clean him up for the loss, Simonson ends up on the ground. Really nice blocking from Remmers and Zeitler, Zeitler in particular with a violent push to turn defender away from the play.

3rd & 7 - Jones in shotgun 11 personnel Ellison opposite slot WR next to Remmers. Jets 2 DL, edge defenders standing, weak-side safety on line, 2 backers close by, single high safety. Jets send 7, Gallman with nice blitz pickup, Jones quick recognition targets Fowler (defender was off) on quick out for first down. All 7 defenders picked up nicely, no pressure.

1st and 10 - shotgun, 11 personnel, Ellison in motion to RT, Jets with light box (2 DL, 2 edge, 2 backers medium depth), Ellison releases on snap, interior pass pro very strong, Remmers anchors after decent push, Solders technique not great, edge rusher has him turned but he's able to shove him, TD. 5 receivers keep the defense honest across the field (Ellison drawing in the safety) allowing Fowler the one-on-one and Jones nails the pass. TD.

Thanks - you are correct.

but it seemed like every time i looked at the Dline it was a 4 man front.

I was hoping to see Dex, DT and BJ on the field together.

Who knows if it was really open. My initial thought watching was that there had to be a target downfield in the play design, why not try a shot downfield there? Later read on BBI a poster who said the TE was 30 yds downfield. NFL GamePass doesn't give all-22 for preseason so I can't see for myself, but it looks like Ellison would have been the guy if true. Would love to hear from anyone else if they actually saw/remember the play.

Giants primarily showed 4 man front last year too. It's all I'm seeing so far, and that's what I would expect. I saw tons of it last year doing this stuff - 2 DL with 2 edge defenders on the line.

So far not liking Olson Pierre in this role and wondering if McIntosh or someone can beat him out. Slayton flashed, looked like he had size and strength on a couple of plays, looking forward to reviewing that part of the game to see if any other DL could do better than Pierre.
Jets 3rd drive
Dan in the Springs : 8/9/2019 4:07 pm : link
And as soon as I post this, the Giants open the third drive with 5 on the line. Hill, Tom, Dex, down, Golden and Carter on edge, Connelly and Davis at backer. I like this personnel only not sold on Golden yet, hoping maybe X-man or someone else can steal that position from him.

Jets have tight formation (9 across the line) QB under center, 1 RB. Dex and Tom get single blocking and both drive their man back easily collapsing what would have been a pocket where it not for the quick release. 4 DB's are off and the 2 LB's drop into zone, quick out to the TE in the left flat, great job by Jenkins charging up quickly and nice push out of bounds to limit the completion to a 2 yd gain. Golden drops very shallow zone - no rush. Not enough time for an outside rush but Carter does a good job seeing the play develop, elevates and just misses a batted ball.

2nd and 8 same personnel, looks like they want Golden/Hill on the strong side as the Giants flip sides putting Dex/Carter on the weak (right) side of the formation. Good job on the weak side with Carter and Dex tying up their man opening a huge hole for Davis who shoots the gap very quickly and makes the tackle in the backfield. Peppers also shot into the backfield quickly, was there in case Davis didn't make the play, and Connelly had a lane also because the strong side collapse the line toward center as well. Very interesting play because the strength of the DL (Hill/Tom/Dex all crashed toward the center which opened the lanes for the backers. Hope to see more of this look.

3rd & 11 - Giants back to nickel look as Jets go to 11 personnel, Hill and Pierre rotated in, Love in the slot. Draw play, Pierre completely ineffective vs. double-team, good recognition by Davis and Peppers who come up quickly and make the tackle a few yards downfield, but well short of the first down marker.

A note on Pierre - he's regularly drawing double-teams in this configuration but he's not really being blocked by two guys. One OL handles him easily so far and the second OL has consistently been available. Won't be long before OC's recognize this and stop assigning two blockers to him.

Punt and lightning break.
Sorry wasn't clear on the 2nd down play
Dan in the Springs : 8/9/2019 4:09 pm : link
Dex/Carter flipped to the defense's left, the offense's right. Still the strong side as the Jets lined their TE to their left.
Giants 3rd drive...
Dan in the Springs : 8/9/2019 4:26 pm : link
Tanney in shotgun, Perkins back, Simonson the TE, 3 WR on left. Changes on the OL, Gates at LT, Brown LG, Pulley C, Salako RG, Slade RT. Surprising to see this as they aren't listed this way at all on the depth chart, but going off the numbers that's who I see on the field.

Tanney hands off to Perkins inside run. Pulley whiffs on the blitzing linebacker, Salako & Brown with good push on their men. Perkins good recognition runs between RT Slade and Simonson, very little daylight there but plays skinny and strong push gets him through to the second level. Simonson ends up double-teamed by edge defender and safety and goes to the ground, but by then Perk is past the LOS falling forward for 4 yd gain. Not bad considering the immediate pressure up the middle on Pulley.

2nd & 6, 21 personnel with a twist, Penny lines up in the X-WR position on the strong side, Tanney throws the quick bubble screen to him. Quick release means no significant rush to block, Russell Shepard either whiffs on his block or possibly didn't know the call, releases vertically like he might be going out for a pass and looks behind him when the defender doesn't follow. Penny with a real nice job of YAC considering there are two defenders there in the open field, turns this possible loss into a nice 11 yd gain.

Have to stop for right now, let me know if you want me to keep posting my notes. Not sure they are of value to anyone and probably won't keep posting otherwise as it really slows my viewing down.
Imo Dex on the

Shouldn't you rename your kid "Captain Checkdown"?

Fair question

You do realize we play that team for real this year and things were intentionally less than vanilla, right?
