don't get to NYC too often, but saw the Mets about 2 & 1/2 weeks ago (vs SD) with my son. It happened to be 1 of the 2 games they've lost in the last 3 weeks! Oh well.
Would love for them to take 2/3. Sweep would be ridiculous.
1 through 6, even 1 through 7, that lineup can put runs on the board. If Strasburg is hittable, they will get after him. If not, run up the pitch count and get at their bullpen.
This isn’t anything tougher than what they’ve been facing over the last few weeks. The Nats lineup isn’t that good. This is essentially the “Pirates lineup” again.
The key will be if our hitters can break through against some much tougher pitching. I’d expect some low scoring games in this series.

how Stroman does tonight. He didn't impress me versus a bad Pitt lineup. A bit tougher task tonight. If he can throw a gem tonight it'd go a long way toward adding more helium to the optimistic bubbling around here.
A hopeful article from Mark Simon re: Panik both offensively and D Â
Panik is hitting .235 with three home runs and a .627 OPS this season.
However, he misses on only 10% of his swings (the third-lowest rate in MLB). Also, his expected numbers indicate that he was underachieving with the Giants.
Based on batted ball type, location and velocity, Panik’s expected numbers by our metrics are a .281 batting average with eight home runs and a .774 OPS.
Re: his defense:
Quote:
Panik grades out as an average defender by Defensive Runs Saved this season.
However, average is an upgrade for the Mets, given Robinson Cano’s struggles both at the plate and in the field for much of the season. Panik also has 18 Good Fielding Plays, based on review from our Video Scouts. That’s tied for fourth by a second basemen this season. He also ranked in the top-third among second basemen in most Good Fielding Plays per 100 Innings and fewest Defensive Misplays & Errors per 100 innings this season.
it was up in the air forever. When you give good teams extra outs and extra bases it's a killer. Obviously 1 play shouldn't dictate an entire lineup, but if whoever is playing 2B doesn't hit they need to have a quick trigger putting McNeil there and just play Lagares for the defense.

Baseball is such an amazing game. Both pitchers look unhittable first time through and second time it's like a switch was flipped and things change.
Now lets see who can take a punch and get it back together.
What's even crazier is it happened with both of these teams starters (which are solid) and not their BP's (which are shaky). This series is going to be fun.

Ive never called you a name once until after you've gotten nasty with me. Why dont you stop being a weasily dick, admit it when your wrong, and stop clogging up threads with this nonsense.
nowhere in that post does it say what you said it does, it was literally a list with more than 10 different team rankings from the FG stats table and was not a post directed at you or anyone else (nor a statement about which of those rankings was best).
So this saga once again plays out true to form:
you say something hyperbolic when disagreeing with someone ("Conforto wasn't within 10 feet")
Accuse that person of saying something they didn't say. (fwar is the bestest!!!!!)
Call them a liar.
Post something completely different from what you claimed and then flash your thread police siren that we should all "move on".

Can we move on for real this time?
Nope because anyone with a brain can see what you are saying there regarding fWAR... and you were wrong... and immediately jumped to name calling. That's the point. Exact same thing tonight. I simply made a comment that it looked like it would be tough for anyone to get there and you resort to name calling. And now we've sucked up a third of the thread with bullshit. Yeah I can move on.. But just be more cognizant of your actions if you want to avoid this shit going forward.
How long before they fill the unis with advertisements?
logo patches within 3 years supposedly.
Seriously? Ugh
As serious as I am that fwar is the best offensive stat ever invented. MLB expected to introduce advertising patches to uniforms within three years, report says - ( New Window )
Keep it up dickwad.
interesting thing about JDD - since he's such a good breaking ball Â
hitter, it's an unorthodox situation for Strasburg here. His weakness is the FB (even though he's been better lately), but the FB is hard to close out a hitter who only needs a fly ball.

they are really keep Stroman out there? The man is gassed
yea it seemed like he lost it in the 5th inning, then got hammered in the 6th and was lucky to get the line out to Rosario. Statcast had that ball as 81% of being a hit.
Really don’t want to see Stroman against the top of the order Â
"I also had to apologize to Brodie because he broke one of his favorite ottomans. It's a good thing Vargas isn't here though, he'd probably be fighting one of you guys right now"
even though it's not as bad as it was at the beginning of the year. First have to make this Strasburg's last inning. He's got 88 pitches, can't give him an easy run through the bottom of the order. Frazier and Panik need to put together good at bats.
Frazier and Panik each need to see 5+ pitches here Â
but they need to know the situation and try to work the count a little to help get him out of the game. Frazier pounding his 2nd pitch into the ground is pure garbage.
I think the decision for the Nats should be just as obvious in the other direction as the decision for the mets. He's under 100 pitches, he is their ace, he just had an easy inning. Why not give him 1 hitter? I'd far prefer they take him out then keep him in.

Agreed, but he's getting PH for. I actually would have still had Stras come out to bat w/ 2-outs, no one on...but like I said good for NYM

Frazier atbats... Unbelievable he's been able to stay in the lineup all year with the injuries we've had.
I don’t think Frazier was ever leaving the lineup, even if we had zero injuries.
I think if Lowrie ever dressed he would have started at 3B with Cano at 2B. I also think if Nimmo stayed healthy McNeil would have had to move to the IF earlier which also could have pushed Frazier out. Who knows though?
Yeah I dont think Ive ever seen a bottom of the 9th 3 run HR to tie it before by the Mets. And I was at Shea for the 8 run comeback against the Braves in 2000, but that wasn't in the 9th.
is really fun. Yes Conforto made an all star game once before and they've each had some success before this recent run, but not as the core of the lineup. This is their team right now. Conforto grinded out a pitch to hit like a true #3 hitter does. Rosario is getting on base and making hard contact. Alonso is obviously the definition of a cleanup hitter. Really cool to watch the pieces fit together like this.
And shout out to Sandy Alderson. That's 2 high-ish draft picks, 1 high profile IFA (his first when he took the job here), and a diamond in the rough draft pick his regime was patient with.
Could have been healthy and in the mix with this crew. He's just as young as any of them and he would have been having a blast right now. Hopefully, he's back soon.
It’s times like these where idiot fans of another team were ripping Met fans around the trade deadline for us being deluded enough to think we even had a chance at the wildcard.

Yeah and I can promise most of them are lurking here every night. lol.
FP Santangelo after Frazier's tying bomb, he didn't analyze the pitch location or the swing or something else relevant to the at-bat (you know, his job and all), he just complained that Todd's bat flip was too big. Said something like, "I know he's excited and all but...blah blah blah." Like he's ever had such a big hit in his career. What a tool.

I wonder what he had to say at Robles’ bat flip right at the Mets dugout earlier in the game. Let me guess...nothing? Lol.

The Nats were making all sorts of over the top gestures all game long. Homer announcers are the worst. Seems like this guy acted like a petulant chid.
Energy was off the charts at Citi tonight. Seemed like 80% of the crowd stayed until the very end. That was just Amazin Amazin Amazin!!!
Congrats for attending an epic game!!
Thanks! It was pure elation. People in my section spraying each other with beer and stroman’s family a few rows back. These are one of the nights we live for as sports fans.
Also no lugo, no Diaz tonight with Thor and the Ace coming up. Chance for an epic weekend. Psyched to read the game thread. If it was like section 114 it went from screaming at Mickey to practically making out with strangers. Just Amazin!!!
Or maybe not, are Rosario and JD Davis. Davis is an absolute stud and its a crime we didn't get him home after he led off with a double.
Im not surprised Rosario is evolving as a hitter, but I am shocked at how well he is playing defense all of the sudden.
HUGE.
Davis scored on Frazier’s home run. If you mean Rosario getting stranded after his double I agree, but that was a one-out double as McNeil K’d to lead off the bottom of the 8th. I think Rosario got stranded at 3rd a couple times last night.
Either way the Mets own Doolittle which has to be demoralizing to Washington.

Ah, yes. I mixed up the two. Still, Davis had a huge night.
But I can't help looking at all these young cornerstones, mostly his draft picks and IFA signings and help thinking this was always the vision.
I always said the lineup was a little behind the pitching but if not for incredibly unfortunate injuries over the last couple of seasons I do believe we should have bridged the gap from 2015-2019 successfully and had a sustained run.
Either way, I haven't seen a young hitting nucleus like this in baseball develop together in some time.
Michael Conforto
Brandon Nimmo
Amed Rosario
Pete Alonso
Jef McNeil
Dominc Smith
and now add
JD Davis.
Heck, with a little luck we would have kept TDA and he would have blossomed with this group too this year. Oh well.
Either way, this is an incredible group that has a chance to stay to gather for some time.
a few nice highlights on the farm last night too Â
Most notably Vientos has been surging lately and stayed hot going 2/5 with a 2b. Over the 2nd half of the season (41 games) Vientos is hitting .301 with a near .900 OPS with 7 homers + 14 2b's. If there was a little more time left in the season they probably would have promoted him to A+, but at this point probably best to just let him ride out the hot streak. Mauricio (having a very solid season hitting .284) and Newton (not having a great year) each hit homers for Columbia too.
Baty also had a big night with a hr, 3b and 2 rbis and David Peterson had a strong start in AA going 5 innings and allowing just 1 hit (0 runs, 3k/2bb). In what has generally been regarded as a disappointing season, his numbers overall don't look so bad:
3-4 (19 starts)
4.37 era / 3.34 fip / 2.93 xfip
96k / 30bb / 90 ip (all pretty solid)
The lack of results in his record, his peripherals looking strong, and his babip against being very high (.345) make it it appear that he's had some bad luck and not a lot of run support. Maybe he's still got a chance after all.
One thing I have to give Brodie and the owners credit for is playing Â
Alonso from day one rather than bringing him up mid season to get another year of control.
It wouldn't have been midseason, it would have been a few weeks to keep his service time this season under 172 days. That's still obviously a very significant amount of big league time. The Cubs made sure Kris Bryant only got exactly 171 days in 2015 and he still played 151 games.
I have no issue doing something player friendly and to try to put the best team on the field, but in a 4-5 years when they break off extension talks with him like they just did with Wheeler the 1 less year of control may be a regret if he's the MVP level player we hope he continues to become. IMO it was a very Wilpon move in the sense that they got positive publicity and it cost them 0$ in the present day. But in the future it's going to add a chunk of $ to a payroll that they aren't usually so willing to accommodate.
because I thought then there was too much valuable experience to be gained (2 months) that it wasn't worth being cheap. We also would have known a lot better how to approach the offseason.
For 9 extra games, with 3 solid young players pushing for playing time (Mcneil, Smith, JDD) I would have just bit the bullet for a couple weeks.

Really impressive he kept that fair. I don’t think there are very many teams who can match our assortment of IF prospects. Mauricio’s upside is high enough FG said he would have been in contention to be the #1 or #2 overall pick this past year. Gimenez is a unanimous top10 SS prospect even if his upside isn’t enormous. Baty and Alvarez are making noise in their first taste of pro ball (especially Alvarez) - and Vientos just keeps progressing.
LFGM!
Would love for them to take 2/3. Sweep would be ridiculous.
Also alternates righty lefty
Then Cespedes and Lowrie
Amazing the way guys have stepped up

Ive never called you a name once until after you've gotten nasty with me. Why dont you stop being a weasily dick, admit it when your wrong, and stop clogging up threads with this nonsense.
Very happy Harper and Murphy are gone.
Let’s get out of this!!

But just be more cognizant of your actions if you want to avoid this shit going forward.

isn't first rule of z fight club no name calling?
yea it seemed like he lost it in the 5th inning, then got hammered in the 6th and was lucky to get the line out to Rosario. Statcast had that ball as 81% of being a hit.
and the righty-righty matchup he wanted so desperately?
Trea Turner vs. lefties = .296
Trea Turner vs. righties = .284
or in other words, didn't matter all that much. Probably should have just put the guy in who wasn't completely gassed and getting hit hard.
Great debut for him in his first game that's ever mattered later than May.
Not firing him in June is in contention for BVW's biggest mistake.
But that first base umpire from 100 feet away saw JD Davis’ check-swing so clearly to call that bullshit strike.

100% agree. I'm very happy this other guy is in.
I don’t think Frazier was ever leaving the lineup, even if we had zero injuries.
Quote:
Frazier atbats... Unbelievable he's been able to stay in the lineup all year with the injuries we've had.

I think if Lowrie ever dressed he would have started at 3B with Cano at 2B. I also think if Nimmo stayed healthy McNeil would have had to move to the IF earlier which also could have pushed Frazier out. Who knows though?
Don't hold your breathe. McNeil's the likeliest starting 3B next year.
But Met's don't care too much about steals either
Sure would be nice to have not lost 2 runs to crappy defense and another to the manager being blind to the fact that Stroman was gassed.
Last time it took the Mick an extra base to remember that...swapped Altherr in when Ramos got to 2nd

Thanks man. You’re one of the good ones.
Yeah I dont think Ive ever seen a bottom of the 9th 3 run HR to tie it before by the Mets. And I was at Shea for the 8 run comeback against the Braves in 2000, but that wasn't in the 9th.
Now I'm juiced and going to they gym to blow off some steam!
Haha no. But saw BVW tearing down the hall to greet MC, then the rest as they were coming in
They easily have the worst bullpen I have seen in a long time. And I know how bad the Mets bullpen is.
And shout out to Sandy Alderson. That's 2 high-ish draft picks, 1 high profile IFA (his first when he took the job here), and a diamond in the rough draft pick his regime was patient with.

Phillies have the worst of all of them
Im not surprised Rosario is evolving as a hitter, but I am shocked at how well he is playing defense all of the sudden.
HUGE.

I was watching the Nats broadcast, they went to the next show pretty quickly after it was over.

Quite an uplifting debate to watch on this thread...
Yeah and I can promise most of them are lurking here every night. lol.
I wonder what he had to say at Robles’ bat flip right at the Mets dugout earlier in the game. Let me guess...nothing? Lol.
Never could have predicted they would have been this awesome but still fun to think about.
Quote:
FP Santangelo after Frazier's tying bomb, he didn't analyze the pitch location or the swing or something else relevant to the at-bat (you know, his job and all), he just complained that Todd's bat flip was too big. Said something like, "I know he's excited and all but...blah blah blah." Like he's ever had such a big hit in his career. What a tool.

Soto not only flipped the bat but stared at the dugout. Cry a fucking river FP
The Nats were making all sorts of over the top gestures all game long. Homer announcers are the worst. Seems like this guy acted like a petulant chid.
Congrats for attending an epic game!!

Energy was off the charts at Citi tonight. Seemed like 80% of the crowd stayed until the very end. That was just Amazin Amazin Amazin!!!

Hahah just read it! Yup. Exactly what was going on at the ballpark. Too funny
Winning covers up a multitude of sins!

All three teams ended up winning unfortunately. STL also won. No help there.
Quote:
Or maybe not, are Rosario and JD Davis. Davis is an absolute stud and its a crime we didn't get him home after he led off with a double.

Ah, yes. I mixed up the two. Still, Davis had a huge night.

Yeah all went south after I commented. lol
Re-Sign Wheeler!
Yup. Argument seems silly now doesnt it? Every win counts and Alonso was ready day 1.

@mikemayerMMO
In last 20 games, JD Davis has hit .413 with a 1.194 OPS.

This guy is sounding better every day. I hope he stays hot.
For 9 extra games, with 3 solid young players pushing for playing time (Mcneil, Smith, JDD) I would have just bit the bullet for a couple weeks.

There is a video of Mauricio's HR from yesterday. Just pure muscled it out. looks like a shorter Strawberry - he's so skinny.

And has almost surpassed Wilmers career year.
