And now this: Raiders’ WR Antonio Brown has told team officials that, unless he gets to wear his old helmet, he will not play football again, per league sources.

And more....

Antonio Brown believes the new helmet that the rules mandate he wears protrudes out and interferes with his vision as he tries to catch football. The Raiders have been sending Brown other approved helmets to try out but, at this time, he is not interested in wearing any of them.

He's a fucking lunatic. The Raiders made a very big mistake bringing this guy aboard. He's not worth this headache. He's a great player, but no one is worth this. Just a daily headline and utter distraction after distraction.

It does seem like Brown has been particularly off the rails the last couple of years - he didn't seem like this type of guy before that. He was always a little bit of a character, but he's just really been particularly looney recently.

I won't speculate on head shots or anything - though the one he took from Burfict a few years ago was brutal - and I have no idea if he's mentally okay or not. It's not my place to speculate on stuff like that... but something is just really not right with this dude.

I'm just glad this isn't our problem. What a nightmare.

Erroneous notion. One of the biggest signs of BPD is treating people horribly without realizing it. This seems the case, coupling with being a rich athlete who's clearly been famous for too long. I wouldn't be surprised the NFL give in to this, and he finds some other reason to be upset.

It's not wholly erroneous. That may be true of BPD but not bipolar.

And in either case, most mentally ill people are more a threat to themselves than they are to others.

He’s one of 32 players with this issue. How many other WRs, I don’t know, but chances are he’s better than all of those wide receivers.

Let’s imagine a world where AB can earn another $5 in performance bonuses. If he thinks the new helmets will affect his performance, why not fight like hell to continue earring the old helmet.

Maybe his vision is great, I don't know. But he's been the most productive receiver in the league since he was drafted, so maybe it has something to do with it.

So how are we defending the part where they've offered to let him try different models and he basically just told them to fuck off and that he wasn't interested?

His behavior has been inexcusable. Threatening to retire over a helmet is pathetic and he's been acting like a lunatic for the better part of 2-3 years now. This is just one of many things he's said or done that have been extremely distracting and I really just can't muster up a single ounce of rationalization or sympathy for him at this point - I'm sorry. There might be a simpler solution as to why AB is acting weird. It might be a problem that affects one out of four americans.

He might be superstitious!

This is VERY common in the NFL, and goes back to the start of the game.

In this case, Antonio might view his helmet as his "good luck charm", similar to Roy Hobb's "Wonderboy" bat in The Natural. He'd make any excuse to keep wearing it.

I'm not sure why the NFL and NFLPA aren't willing to allow this sort of thing, if the player is a long time vet and is willing to sign a waiver not to sue or be part of any settlement. Didn't MLB allow vets like Pete Rose to wear cap inserts instead of batting helmets, grandfathering in the vets when they went to mandatory batting helmets?

Well, I'm a therapist. I'm not saying that to mock you in any way but I've worked with 1000s of clients over the years. I've worked with clients that organize their rooms when they're manic - and others that get super irritable or aggressive. People can experience these things and the issues can present themselves wildly different. I'm not even sure he has BPD - people love throwing that one around. Honestly, it seems more like schizophrenia than anything. Or TBI. Paranoia, strange speech (check out his odd video messages), probably some grandiosity. It's odd and sad.
