You're on fire again.
What's stranger?
BigBluesman : 8/9/2019 4:26 pm : link
This lineup or the fact that it doesn't even look all that strange anymore?

What if I told you back on April 1st, that on August 9th, Gio Urshela would be in the 3 hole, and both Mike Tauchman and Cameron Maybin would be smack-dab in the middle of a lineup that leads the entire majors in runs scored - with the next closest team over 20 runs behind us (BOS) - and that the Yankees would be 37 games over .500?

Just wonderin'...

I'd say ... don't Bogart that joint, my friend - pass it over to me
I would have been shown this

that Thames has lived up to the hype. What our non-stars have done this year certainly cements the decision not to overpay for established FA position stars.

What if I showed you that lineup, and in addition...

said that most of our starting pitchers either sucked, were mediocre, or were injured, and that we didn't bring in another starter before the trade deadline?

Or that right now, our 5 best players who aren't injured include LeMahieu, Urshela and Tauchman? (I would add Gleyber and Didi to the top 5.)

What's Going On With Torres?

We were told he was fully checked out, nothing wrong, he's back with the team, so how come he's not in the lineup???

I looked at that line up and saw

Gardy in the 2 hole. Then the rest of the lineup and thought, pfft, they'll probably win.
With Sanchez back tomorrow
nygnyy274 : 8/9/2019 5:38 pm : link
I think they should keep Higgy up here and just DH Sanchez.
Brett Gardner is quietly having one of his finest seasons
Greg from LI : 8/9/2019 5:41 pm : link
The guy a lot of people didn't want back this year, the old man who had a lousy season last year and struggled mightily early in the season, is now hitting .255/.334/.484 with 17 homers while playing his usual superb outfield. Still the best baserunner on the team too, only caught twice in 11 steal attempts.

Sanchez back tomorrow!
Dave in Hoboken : 8/9/2019 5:43 pm : link
YES!!! This lineup is about to get better, which is a crazy thing to say considering how well they've been hitting, but yeah.
I read earlier that Gardy wants to play again next year.
Dave in Hoboken : 8/9/2019 5:45 pm : link
Would you guys bring him back? Maybe they can go year to year on him. He's been playing well in the role he's been in this season. I wouldn't be against going year to year with him, as long as he's not asking for a crazy amount of money, which I don't think Gardy would.

I'm assuming they deal Frazier in the offseason
Greg from LI : 8/9/2019 5:47 pm : link
So it depends on whether they want to carry 4 outfielders or 5, because it seems pretty likely that Tauchman has at least earned the opportunity to start the season in the Bronx next year.
Frazier has so much more value as a trade piece than he does in this

OF.

For me, the biggest question is what to do about Andujar. I LOVE his bat and his approach at the plate makes him even more valuable. I wouldn't be opposed to making him the permanent DH. But is that a wise move? Is he more valuable as a trade piece as well?
I could see trying him out at 1B
Greg from LI : 8/9/2019 5:54 pm : link
He could DH some and play first some. As good as Voit has been, he's 5 years older than Andujar and an butcher in the field.

Andujar is too good to move unless someone is going to gift us a future number one starter. I doubt it.

The defensive metrics don't love Gio any more than they did Andujar and i'd prefer they duke it out in the spring next year. With the injuries we had this year, we are going to need to avoid moving bats we are probably going to need at some point.

Similar for Frazier who I think has far more upside than anyone else who could help us next season. I'd much rather move Hicks but he doesn't seem to want to stay healthy enough to make getting anything for him possible.
Come on RP
adamg : 8/9/2019 6:13 pm : link
Gio is by far a better defender than MA. It's not even close. If Gio can even close to maintain his offense of this year, it's a no brainer that he's the starting 3B.

And Hicks is a complete player. He's got GG potential. He's got pop, sees pitches, and works walks. You can't say all that about Frazier. I think you dump Hicks at your own peril. There aren't a lot of better CF in the majors.

Frazier's lack of fielding and professionalism counts a lot against him imho. I don't think he has a head for NYC. I think we may trade him and he may shine elsewhere and it still could have been the right move.
I should say

Let's slow that train down a bit. Tauchman is 3.5 years older than Frazier and in almost the same exact amount of plate appearances has a few more doubles and a few more walks. Frazier has been the better hitter in high lev. situations while Tauchman obviously has added far superior defense. I wouldn't toss Clint quite overboard yet or elevate Tauchman (in terms of 2020 plans) either.

I'm not against trading Clint, but to elevate Tauchman just on this sample size is a bit much.

My eye says the same thing re Gio. For whatever reason, he isn't even league average on D this year. We also didn't get a chance to see if Miggy improved this year and how much he can move that needle for next year.

There is alot that Hicks brings to the table but if I have to pick on for this team in 2020, i'm taking Frazier. He is faster, younger, more power and better bat-on-ball. He, like Didi, isn't going to take walks but if he can get his head on straight he's my guy. He's a potential AS. I'd be surprised if Hicks has another season better than he did last year. As we are likely to be riding him for years to come, I certainly hope i'm wrong.
Just checking the numbers: Urshela has 13 errors in 80 games
adamg : 8/9/2019 6:52 pm : link
Andujar had 15 in 500 more innings in 2018.

Might be due to Urshela having much better range and more opps to make errors. But that is still a lot of errors.

But that seems to be why Urshela has a negative d war.

So, Urshela could probably improve his D. But I still take him in the field over MA.

If you cannot see how superior Urshela is to Andujar in the field you need to find another sport to watch. Andujar is better at the plate, true, but as far as complete player, Urshela is better. However, let us see how the season plays out.

Frazier vs Hicks is tougher, but Hicks is a GG CF. Frazier is not even a league AVG corner OF. I think Frazier would be better at the plate, but not by much. Problem is who would be CF if Hicks was traded and Frazier kept. Gardy will be 36 next year. I'm not sure Tauchman is a CF. He appears to be a VG corner OF with speed and a decent, but not great arm. Judge could be CF, but that would beat the crap out of him.

In the end, I think Frazier is more expendable than Andujar.
Does anyone think Frazier is a starting CF in the MLB?
adamg : 8/9/2019 7:00 pm : link
I don't see that. And, I don't see it as Frazier vs. Hicks, because I see them playing totally different positions. Frazier is a corner OF bat type. Hicks is Gardy Jr.

To me, if you have to juxtapose Frazier, it's Frazier vs. Stanton.
We are just fortunate
RasputinPrime : 8/9/2019 7:03 pm : link
that Cashman stole Urshela and Tauchman so there is now a conversation to be had about 3B and LF. Competition is good and i'd love to see what Frazier and Andujar, both younger with higher upside, can do with the big club.

That Gardner toss really fucked that up too

Judge looked vacant at the plate. Gardner would have given a much better AB.

They'd prefer that Estrada plays every day. He was going to be the corresponding move for Torres if he needed an IL stint - but since Gleyber is expected to be back in the lineup soon, there's nowhere for Thairo to really get regular PT so he'd be relegated to the bench most games.

Valera obviously isn't ideal - but it's easier to just have him ride the pine 5 times a week so that Estrada can keep getting AB's in Scranton.

He just does not have a put away pitch. How many two strike hits did he give up? I'm guessing most of his hits given up were with two strikes.

Not only thin skinned, but a huge strike zone. It made for bad baseball.
36 games over .500.
Dave in Hoboken : 8/9/2019 11:10 pm : link
Only teams even competitive with the Yankees at this point is Houston and the Dodgers. All of the other teams are just kinda...there.
I still can't get over the two-hits call
Greg from LI : 8/10/2019 12:26 am : link
How the hell did he come up with that?? The ball didn't come anywhere near the bat a second time.
Bring on the robots.
Dave in Hoboken : 8/10/2019 12:29 am : link
This team would probably be 40 games over .500 right now instead of 36 if we had the robots making the calls this season.
It is fairly rare that the press
section125 : 8/10/2019 6:45 am : link
calls out an umpire, but Segal got some "love" this morning. In the post game interview, Crew Chief Iassogna tried to explain away the ejection saying Gardy had hit the dugout roof with his bat. But the Post's Ken Davidoff questions whether that is relevant(even if it was, it was the previous pitch). And Coney explained that you cannot call the umpire terrible(personal), but normally saying a call was terrible is acceptable(within reason of course). Segal said Grady (it was Maybin) said he was effin terrible, but actually Maybin said the call was effin terrible. So Segal not only heard the wrong thing, he blamed the wrong person. So his hearing was as bad as his vision.

Also, nobody questioned the double hit it call on Maybin's dribbler.

BTW, the umps did not lose that game, Happ did, with some help.
That home ump sucked last night...
M.S. : 8/10/2019 8:31 am : link

...my next door neighbor's Yellow Lab can call better balls and strikes.
What has always bothered me
black aces : 8/10/2019 8:39 am : link
is that there is no accountability. Segal didn't make himself available to the media after. The crew chief dodged questions. Meanwhile you can force a 20 something year old player to face a barrage of media after messing up a game. Segal wont be called in, fined or reprimanded even behind the scenes.

I wonder if we'd be thinking this if not for the juiced balls...

Happ's 4-seamer generates a ton of fly balls, and a lot of fly ball guys are having problems this year.

Not totally defending Happ, but some of the HR numbers around the league are absurd right now. It's August 10th and we already have 4 guys right on the precipice of 40 HR's (Yelich, Trout, Alonso, Bellinger) - at least one of these guys is going to hit 50+ and my guess is all 4 will at least get close.

A guy like Freddy Galvis is going to hit 20+ HR's this year and he's not even playing full time now that Bichette has been called up.
Happ's contract

will be interesting to see how they handle his starts/innings next year if this continues.

If they don’t trade Happ
bigbluehoya : 8/10/2019 9:27 am : link
Then they absolutely need to use an opener with him to avoid hitting the 3rd year vesting clause.

I don’t really care if they light their money on fire, but for as long as ownership has an upper bound on the payroll, I can’t help but care.

It would be lunacy to just stroll along like nothing is wrong and stumble into the third year of that awful deal.

Hopefully Severino and Betances can be available and effective in the playoffs. Because the Yankees are going to have to try to win 3 playoff series with very limited starting pitching.
