The Eli Manning situation is both sad and expected

Junior22 : 8/9/2019 11:16 pm
Eli Manning has done his job for the Giants and helped deliver 2 SB wins which he will forever be in the hearts of Giants fans.

The second half of his career has been brutal in terms of success and but in the grand scheme of things he did his job with pride and honor.

I felt that once we took Jones that high that Eli situation just did not make sense at all. It is absolutely clear that Eli was kept out of respect but things that transpired right after last year ended has led me to believe that Eli was lied to by DG.

Remember that Archie told the media that he would be happy with Eli's career if it ended after last year but that if he returned to the Giants things will need to change because Eli will not go through another bad year.

The Giants traded established good players and replaced them with unknown talent and worst of all took Jones at 6 instead of getting defensive help or another weapon for Eli.

Once Jones was selected the clock started for Eli and fans can say if he does this and that this year he should or might get an extension. This is supporters' jaded dreams as there is absolutely zero chance that happens because Jones was drafted at 6 to take the reigns.

Eli cannot be happy knowing that the team did not improve the team enough to contend and the defense which was brutal last year got young rookie talent but that does not happen in one year and you can expect a lot of struggles that Eli might play great and lose most games due to the defense.

To me, Eli has all the intentions of retiring after this year but he wanted 1 more year to build on his resume for the PFHOF. No way Eli stuck this year thinking the Giants were a SB contending team.

The Giants did not do enough to improve the team to the level of making the playoffs and used their most prized pick on a qb.

With every pick and loss and bad series, the boos will come and the crowd cheers will become louder for Jones. This is Jones team now even if Eli out of respect has been given a bone by the Giants when Eli deserves to play for a contender and try and rekindle the clutch Eli. But Eli to me has no intention of playing for another team and is just about establishing a good year that will add to his HOF resume to ensure it.

Endings for loved players is never good and easy. This won't end great for Eli in NY but at the end of the day Eli has already stamped his career for the Giants and nothing bad Eli does this year will ever tarnish that.

The GM's job is to do what is in the best interest of the NY Giants not what is in the best interest of Eli Manning. I love Eli and I am happy he is still here but lets be real. The Giants probably have the best team around Eli in some time. The only issue I see is not the talent level but just time. It will take time for this team to put it together. How fast they do that is the real question.

As a Jones skeptic, it was a very encouraging performance but, good Lord, some people are acting as if it was the greatest display of quarterbacking they have ever seen in their lives. He made four routine throws against a terrible team, under zero pressure, with wide open receivers. The TD pass was very nice and better than routine, but let's not go overboard. Call it what it was, a good start, and let's go from there.

It is sad because of how it will eventually end with Eli being replaced. Not going out on his own terms ala Strahan etc

Also this has zero to do with what Jones did last night. Jones is going to be the qb for this team for better or worst as you do not take a qb that high to sit him and wait.

Some of you think this is a good team but to me the team has not made the type of jump in talent that some think. To young in many aspects to think this year is a playoff team.

Eli just being here for the sake of being here is not the way Eli thought this was going to go. You think Eli thought the Giants were taking a qb at 6 this year right after the season ended last year? You are delusional if you think that

Eli can play well for the first 5 or 6 games and the defense can be a brutal work in progress that will lead to a 2-4 or 1-5 record and Eli will be pulled and not for his doing.

The Eli leach is not tied to Eli's performance as much as it is tied to the record of the team.

Tell me something, Eli returning this year besides your own bias about it, what was the reason to keep him after taking Jones that high?

Did any of you read the Archie interview? Did the Giants do a lot to improve the team and give Eli a chance? The biggest issue was the defense and nobody can say they improved it to the point it will win games for the team.

The offense improve the oline but their receivers are already limited with Tate suspension looking and Coleman done. Shepard broken thumb and nobody knows for sure if he is playing week 1

I have thought this was no more than 6 and 7 if things break right type of team. Not good enough and the perfect storm for Jones to take over

not the NY Mannings. Who cares about Eli feels, DG has to do what's best for the team. Oh and the team had two other 1st rder which were used on two guys who will play a big role on the defense. Though lacking in depth, we still have talented weapons and an improved line

You don't know what DG said, but he did the following:

Improved the OL with 2 vets.
Got value for OBJ (Not sure Eli really liked his attitude)
Signed Golden Tate
Signed Sterling Shepard
Signed a solid backup RB
Drafted young defenders

He could not have promised FA signings as we had little cap room. What else would he have promised? I have a feeling Eli was not disappointed to see Collins and Vernon leave.

He certainly has that opportunity, with finally a pro OL, reliable WRs and an all world RB, and a defense that have several talented DBs, beefy DL with some wildcards at LB, and a very reasonable schedule.

The Giants will be able to move the ball, certainly, the defense must gel, so it is doable.

If they start 0-7 again, Eli brought us some magical years, as the best QB of the NY Giants and leaves nearly a billionaire.....nothing sad about that.

joeinpa : 8/10/2019 6:59 am : link
And has been the quarterback of a 8-24 team the past 2 years; there is nothing wrong in moving on from the personnel that accumulated that record.

I m neither an Eli apologist or fan boy, I m pleased he got to play out his contract, but no one really knows how much of the blame for the past two years goes on Eli.

Fact is he wasn’t good enough to win with this team, and we also don’t know if a younger more athletic quarterback would have made a difference.

We have a chance to find out this season if the latter is true.
It’s a business

Charlie Conerly was replaced with Y A Tittle. Phil Simms with an assortment of players. Johnny Unitas ended up with San Diego. Joe Namath with the Rams. Joe Montana with Kansas City. Bret Favre with the Jets and Minnesota. Peyton Manning with Denver.

Eli Manning is still a good quarterback. But another quarterback just might be better at this point in his career. I would like to see Eli succeed this year and then retire. But as with other star QBs it may not be a graceful transition.

Eli is starting this year. I don’t agree with that decision, but the job is his. So he controls his fate.

On paper the OL has improved, we have a terrific RB, some decent WRs, and Engram looks to be a very productive TE.

Look, I know the EFC think it’s unfair that Jints Central haven’t provided Eli with Jerry Rice, Tony Gonzalez, Tim Brown, Larry Allen, Kevin Mawae, Alan Faneca, Anthony Munoz, Jackie Slater, Tim Rathman, and Walter Payton. And all at once. But, believe it or not, there are scores and scores of examples of great players - better than Eli - who never sniffed a Super Bowl. So can we put away the Kleenex and have a modicum of perspective.

Please?

The obsession with pushing the “DG is a liar” narrative is one of the weirder trends amongst some nitwit fans over the past offseason.

Why the fuck would he or anyone explain exactly what the Giants plans are, to Eli or the media or fans? Why would anyone want a GM who would telegraph our future QB plans before the draft?

Same with the OBJ trade - people actually acted offended he didn’t come out and publicly state “we’re tired of OBJ’s act and actively shopping him”.

Some fans are weird.

rocco8112 : 8/10/2019 8:12 am : link
we all know after watching that TD drive that Jones is not only better than Eli right now, but he is a stone cold lock for Canton at the end of his career.

If the Giants have half a brain, they reached this conclusion as well and Eli's dead weight will be cut soon and the franchise will be free of that albatross. Finally.

I mean did you see that drive? Those Jet backups were stunned. They didn't know it, but they might as well have taken off their pads and helmets once Jones came in under center. Resistance was futile.

Myself, I booked a trip to Vegas when Fowler caught that pass so I could lock in the current odds for a big blue title this year. I have kids to think about

BillT : 8/10/2019 8:54 am : link
First of all there was no chance they could have improved the team enough to be "playoff contenders". In fact, the moves they did make get them closer to that than the have been in years. Also, I am sure DG told Eli that they were going to be looking for his replacement and Eli would have know that without being told. Getting rid if Eli before the season made no sense because they didn't know if they were going to get a replacement and after they did it was too late. What is true that the Giants wasted a number of Eli's years on the team by not giving him better players but that was ineptitude not their plan.
I have no idea what this OP is trying to say
Mike from Ohio : 8/10/2019 9:00 am : link
Not every QB gets to retire after winning the Super Bowl. Some just get replaced as a team rebuilds or looks to improve. This is a game, not a movie. Everybody doesn’t get the Hollywood ending just because they were a good person and good player.

If you are somehow feeling bad for Eli, I don’t understand that. He was treated well by the Giants and the community and made a boat load of money. He will be in the Giants Ring of Fame and possibly the HoF. He has two SB rings and just as many SB MVPs.

What is it you think has made him an object of pity?
I don’t think some realize that we play the Jets this year

UberAlias : 8/10/2019 9:07 am : link
Is he has seen everything possible out there. Jones hasn’t seen anything yet, and didn’t see anything Thursday like he will in meaningful action. He’s already admitted that’s where he needs to improve. I’m not saying Jones wouldn’t be ready to play week 1, but if Eli and the team are playing well I wouldn’t expect a change.
Another Agony Aunt Thread about Poor Eli Manning

You know, I would pin my comment at the top, if I could.

I had a Charley Conerly fan button when I was a kid. I was sad to see YA bleeding in the end zone. That is to say, I've been a Giants fan (football) for a long time.

This is not a "Days of Our Lives" fan site. The Giants don't play on Lifetime. We don't set aside time on Sunday so we can watch Dance Moms. The Giants play in the freaking NFL! Management's job (at which job they have been performing poorly until recently) is to put the best team on the field, and to play the players who give the team the best chance to win.

Management's job is not Eli Manning's "feelings". Football players come and they go. Their careers end too soon ALL THE FRICKING TIME. Lifelong hopes get washed away after two weeks of a first training camp. THAT'S sad. I can feel bad for a kid who was the best in Pop Warner through a Division One school who goes home after the second preseason game.

Eli Manning has been playing lousy football for at least several years. And being very well paid for it. Yes, there are reasons. Yes, Tisch, Mara, and Jerry Reese could have given him a better cast of characters.

But, as they say, Willie Mays would have hit 660 with a broomstick.

Living in New England as I do, I especially appreciated the two SB wins. Eli Manning is the only QB to beat Brady TWICE on that big stage.

But the Eli Manning era has been over for years. This board has overflowed with comments about "How Eli FEELS about that". I personally don't care how he feels about it. I certainly don't care more than I cared about the end for YA Tittle, or Phil Simms, or Jeff Hostetler, or any other Giants QB.

I'm excited to see what Daniel Jones can do. Let's get on with it!

you are right about most of this except that the receivers were wide open. They only had an average of 1.4 yards of separation at time of completion. The league wide average last season was 2.8 yards. What was so impressive about DJ was how aggressive he was and still able to hit his receivers in such tight spaces and put the ball where only the receivers had a shot. But everything else is true. It’s preseason. It was vanilla O against vanilla D. He didn’t really need to look past his first read. But his mechanics, his accuracy, arm talent, confidence and poise were all on display and proves that there is a lot to look forward to. Just wanted to clear that up. I do agree it is absurd to name this kid the starter after one series in preseason.
