The Eli Manning situation is both sad and expected

Junior22 : 8/9/2019 11:16 pm
Eli Manning has done his job for the Giants and helped deliver 2 SB wins which he will forever be in the hearts of Giants fans.

The second half of his career has been brutal in terms of success and but in the grand scheme of things he did his job with pride and honor.

I felt that once we took Jones that high that Eli situation just did not make sense at all. It is absolutely clear that Eli was kept out of respect but things that transpired right after last year ended has led me to believe that Eli was lied to by DG.

Remember that Archie told the media that he would be happy with Eli's career if it ended after last year but that if he returned to the Giants things will need to change because Eli will not go through another bad year.

The Giants traded established good players and replaced them with unknown talent and worst of all took Jones at 6 instead of getting defensive help or another weapon for Eli.

Once Jones was selected the clock started for Eli and fans can say if he does this and that this year he should or might get an extension. This is supporters' jaded dreams as there is absolutely zero chance that happens because Jones was drafted at 6 to take the reigns.

Eli cannot be happy knowing that the team did not improve the team enough to contend and the defense which was brutal last year got young rookie talent but that does not happen in one year and you can expect a lot of struggles that Eli might play great and lose most games due to the defense.

To me, Eli has all the intentions of retiring after this year but he wanted 1 more year to build on his resume for the PFHOF. No way Eli stuck this year thinking the Giants were a SB contending team.

The Giants did not do enough to improve the team to the level of making the playoffs and used their most prized pick on a qb.

With every pick and loss and bad series, the boos will come and the crowd cheers will become louder for Jones. This is Jones team now even if Eli out of respect has been given a bone by the Giants when Eli deserves to play for a contender and try and rekindle the clutch Eli. But Eli to me has no intention of playing for another team and is just about establishing a good year that will add to his HOF resume to ensure it.

Endings for loved players is never good and easy. This won't end great for Eli in NY but at the end of the day Eli has already stamped his career for the Giants and nothing bad Eli does this year will ever tarnish that.

Eli is the starter

DJ looked good in a small body of work. Really good accuracy, good arm. But, it was a small body of work in very controlled situation.

This is a business, things will work themselves out. Feeling sorry for Eli makes litle sense, IMO. First, QBs with stronger resumes than Eli's have finished their careers with other teams (e.g., Montana, Favre,). Second, Eli is 37 and they have to prepare for the future. Third, it is unlikely that they would want to draft a QB with such a high pick and want him to sit for more than a year. This would work against the possibility of an extension of more than one year. For example, for argument sake - let's say Eli has 3 years of high production left - no way you want a QB who could start sitting that long. So, at best, Eli plays lights out - 1 year extension is most realistic and beneficial option for Giants. On the other hand, for argument sake - Eli has 3 quality years left. Why would he want to use one for an extansion when he could leave at the end of this year for a longer contract somewhere else? This thing is going to work itself out. Personally, I think Eli has some ballin left. Second, I think Jones will be a good QB if given time to develop. But, I do not think 6 plays in a limited situation is compelling evidence to talk about benching Eli.

Bottom line, Eli has led GMen to 2 Lombardis. He may have gotten more with better personnel decisions by the front office (and Burress not shooting himself). He is beng paid a king's ransom to play a kid's game that he loves. Eli is going to thrive after he leaves the game. We should all have such bad luck.

I m neither an Eli apologist or fan boy, I m pleased he got to play out his contract, but no one really knows how much of the blame for the past two years goes on Eli.

Fact is he wasn’t good enough to win with this team, and we also don’t know if a younger more athletic quarterback would have made a difference.

We have a chance to find out this season if the latter is true.
uh... what?! No. We don’t. If DJ starts it will be with a far superior surrounding cast than anything Eli has had to work with. So we won’t find out if the latter is true. We did try with a more mobile QB for one game two seasons ago. Lost that. Threw in Lauletta at the end of a game last season. That went great, huh? Nobody was doing anything behind that OL.

The drivel has been going on since February of 2008.

You sick fuck you just can't help yourself can you...?

Sick fuck?

I don't really understand why you take criticisms of Eli so personally.

arca the sick fuck comment has nothing to do with criticisms of Eli it has to do with this guy following me around whenever I post something...
The only way this ends badly for Eli

is if he and the team shits the bed to start the season. The Giants feel he gives them the best chance to win this year and I don't have a problem with that. I think it would have to take a combination of an abysmal camp/pre-season by Eli and an otherworldly one by Jones for Jones to start out of the gate. So far, that hasn't been the case. Jones has impressed and progressed nicely. But, Eli has also had a good camp and by most accounts has looked sharper and stronger than in recent years.

I'm comfortable seeing what he can do this year. The caveat is he has no room for error this year. 2 or 3 losses in the first few weeks and I think it is fair to move to Jones. However, a good start and a Giants team in contention and it is fair to stick with Eli. Regardless of the results on the field this year, it is also fair to say right now it is his final year. If he is amazing and they win the SB, it would not be realistic to expect that level of success to be sustained. They absolutely should not consider re-signing him under any circumstances. Win or lose this year, next year should be all Jones.
Theres nothing sad about his situation
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/10/2019 11:14 am : link
He's had a long, healthy, and completely successful career and has a shot at the hall of fame. Nobody is going to look back on his career as promise unfulfilled.
I'm loving the bitterness from a select few.
Dave in Hoboken : 8/10/2019 11:33 am : link
To those people, please do NOT stop. The more and more bitterness you show, the sweeter it is.
I completely disagree

These coaches, owners, management, and the players are trying to win a super bowl this season, right now that is the only focus, to dismiss that means you caught up with tv, they are caught up with competing, once the season is over then they will make a more informed decision on the future. If competition dictates changes earlier at all levels during the season then they will be made. This crap about secret plans and agendas are for fools.
I'm.

still trying to comprehend the DG lied statement?

Is that supposed to be bad? Did he lie? Is he supposed to tell the truth to players or did he say nothing?

Is the supposition that a DG lie threw Eli into a tizzy or hurt his feelings, and if so, does that look poorly upon DG or Eli for having tissue paper for emotions?
Don't cut Eli, cut the idiot OP.

My my! Somebody needs his binkie.

Can you remind us all again how you somehow interpreted Greg Cosell mentioning that Eli and Brady are both immobile pocket passers into them being exactly the same QB in general and then actually cut up and rearranged the transcript to try to prove it?

This drives me absolutely nuts. There are so many people here that take everything that comes out of players, coaches, front office at face. Fans act like they are owed the truth. The problem is that the truth is fucking ugly and would cause issues in the media and the fan base. Eli's play and the evaluation of DJ will determine who plays, irregardless if we are winning games or not unless we are significantly above .500.

They can talk about the KC model sure, but that team was annually in the playoffs and was 10-6 with a QB that threw for 8.0 YPA and a 5-1 TD/INT ratio. Does anyone see Eli putting that type of performance up or the Giants being that good?
The GM's job is to lie. I'm for one ecstatic he played the media like
Zeke's Alibi : 8/10/2019 12:46 pm : link
he did and we didn't have to give up assets to grab DJ. We didn't really hear about DJ to the Giants, anything concrete, at least until right before the draft. Do you think if that became known early, the Bengals/Broncos think about trading up? When you have a lot more time to make these decisions it makes it easier to pull the trigger. Maybe the Raiders call on draft night and try to bluff us into giving up assets for the QB we want. They clearly wanted out of that spot.
There are a ton of fans here that think Eli won't play for another
Zeke's Alibi : 8/10/2019 12:51 pm : link
team because of the comments he has made about retiring a Giant. I think that is total BS because of what is a pretty open secret among the league, the Mannings have their eyes on becoming owners. They've lived pretty frugally for people of their means, but NFL teams are expensive, even though the league would bend over backwards to get them in as owners. They need as much capital as possible and if someone is going to offer 20 plus million to Eli to play, he is going to take it. I'm sure when an offer like that doesn't come to fruition people will say he always wanted to retire a Giant, yada, yada, yada. It's all just noise.

Eli is not Peyton where he can take a 3-13 Dear Leader Bill Polian dynasty built roster and go 13-3.

He's closer to other mortals like Warner, surround him with HoF WRs and look great, surround him with garbage and looks terrible.
Yeah you're right Edgerrin James and Marvin Harrison are garbage...

Some of those colts teams were garbage
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/10/2019 3:07 pm : link
Its a colossal failure that those polian teams couldn't put a complete team around Peyton. He had to play of of his mind for them to go anywhere. But yes, harrison and james were outstanding.
What are we reacting to?
UberAlias : 8/10/2019 3:12 pm : link
Things suddenly got sad for Eli because Jones had a good drive behind starting online against backups playing vanilla defense? Maybe Eli gets pulled for Jones, maybe he doesn’t. Perhaps NYG have a good season, perhaps they don’t. At this point he’s the starting QB with 100x the experience his backup has, he has an owner who supports him, the best Oline he’s had since he was winning super bowls and a great running back to make things easier for him. Let’s see how things play out before we pity the man.

Do I make this up? No.

Here you go - a quick refresher to when I pointed out your fiction a year and a half ago. Do you want me to go find the thread where you then rearranged the transcript of what Cosell said to try to prove your misinterpretation?

Actually, maybe "over and out" is in your best interest.
