I think Corey will announce two per day over the next few weeks/to month (I think one a day), so while it is behind the Athletic paywall (which as a side note broke my lifelong rule of never paying for content on the Internet and it's some of the best money I have ever spent) I feel like we can discuss it if people want as he reveals his list.
This should bring us into the pre-season.
I have posted some other rankings (Sportingnews - which was free).
But Pronman will go into much more depth about the systems. I will not on this thread except for the teams people have interest on here and I'll just be mostly parroting Pronman or others (Wheeler, etc.). I haven't seen many of these guys play ever.
So far:
31. Calgary Flames
30. Capitals
Hard to argue with either - the Caps won a cup a year ago and the past few years I've had the Flames as one of my breakout teams. A lot of good youth at the NHL level, just haven't found consistency in the net or the ice.
Criteria:
There is no good way to define a prospect, whether objectively or subjectively, someone is going to get left out by the process, its just the way it goes.
With that said, the eligibility for being a prospect for these rankings is:
A skater no longer qualifies as an NHL prospect if he has played 25 games in the NHL in any campaign, regular season and playoffs combined, or 50 games total; or reaches age 27 by Sept. 15.
A goalie no longer qualifies as an NHL prospect if he has played 10 games in the NHL in any campaign, regular season and playoffs combined, or 25 games total; or reaches age 27 by Sept. 15. |

Wish I could take glee in this, but they are coming off a SCF loss and have a lot of youth infused into the team in recent years.
Plus I think they stole Beecher at the end of the 1st round this year. Fits their model to a T. Big, fast, power forward.
I do think their D is a little suspect, but shouldn't be too much on Achilles heel I expect them to be cup contenders again in 19-20 unfortunately.

Forwards are pretty marginal but with Barzal and so many veterans now under contract (Lee, Bailey, Eberle, Nelson) they don't have a ton of room. They need more high end talent but with where they are likely to be picking (at least while Trotz is there) it's probably more likely to come from trades/FA than draft. Missing out on Panarin is a huge bummer. He could have been such a good fit next to Barzal and they have the room for 1 more big contract.

#24 DAL
Again, fits the mold, but teams have recent young additions.
Love Dallas' mix of youth and veterans. I think with more Heiskanen ice time this year the Stars should be better.
And CBJ has the leagues best D pair with Jones and Werenski. It's sometimes hard to believe they're still 24 and 22 respectively. Seems like they've been around forever. Seth Jones is the player whose D clips I use the most when showing technique to the kids I coach.
Anyway, makes sense neither has much on the farm, they're both close to contending.

Craig Button: I like to make the argument that they (#Habs) have the best prospect pool of anybody in the NHL. Its that good. I think theyve done a terrific job! [...] And thats not even including Kotkaniemi.
He also thinks Yaroslav Askarov is the best goalie prospect since Carey Price, but I think Spencer Knight is right there with him or at least Askarov is more similar to Price.

Lafreniere #1.
Sounds like he views him similarly to a Kakko type prospect.
He has Byfield #4, and I think Byfield could rise.
The fastest riser IMO is Cole Perfetti. He stole the show at the Hlinka/Gretzky and flat out dominated.
See how he does in December.
Only one American I believe in his top 31, but with 11 1st round picks this past June, some adjustment is to be expected.

RE: NYI, he admits he doesn't have the Islanders as high as some scouts who consider it an elite farm system:
Pronman says he himself overrated players like Wahlstrom (I disagree, NCAA freshman years are overrated IMO - especially in Hockey East, but this guy gets paid to do this) and Ishakov.
He also says he might have underrated Dobson and Koivula, but regardless this is his ranking.

I hear ya. I had them 10-12 myself, so 16 isn't egregious. But either way, hard to deny they've taken a step back.
People forget NCAA freshman are 17/18 year old kids playing against 22/23 year olds (sometimes older) and then compare their point totals with kids in juniors.
I heard the same shit about Brady Tkachuk who was in NCAA for a year pre-draft due to his age.
He "only" had 8 goals and 31 points at BU as a Freshman.
I think he put to bed those concerns.
It's not uncommon for boys to grow like this at that age, but it does cause some adjustment.
I'm not sure if the 6'1" is his accurate height - I think it is, but could explain a year that didn't meet expectations (not from a stats standpoint - that's stupid like I said - I just mean overall game), it takes a while to adjust to rapid growth and coordination.
A little surprised Pronman is down on the system but if he's truly re-evaluating his assessment of Wahlstrom and didn't like the draft I guess I get it. Just a little curious because he wasn't especially high on the guys they graduated last year and he did have a bunch of Isles in contention for the top prospect list he did a few weeks ago.
He scored the same amount of goals in the same number of games with the USNDTP as Auston Matthews.
He is behind only Jack Hughes and Auston Matthews in total points in his USNDTP career.
Tied with Clayton Keller and Cole Caufield.
And behind only Hughes and Caufield in goals.
He's legit IMO. Doesn't always mean he'll pan out as an all-star, nothing is guaranteed, but that's why I have his floor where I have it.

Lets call game breakers all stars level, this is overly simplistic but the vast majority on the wing are high end skaters. He's never gotten high marks in that department and Pronman even said that's one area he disappointed last year.
There are certainly a few guys out there whose other scoring skills are so advanced the skating isn't a big deal (like Anders Lee for one) but they are pretty rare and I don't even know if most would consider him a true game breaker. I just never saw a top 3 draft pick like some had him last year.
Ovie, Marchand, Laine, Giroux, Benn - at least half of the top n wingers are not what you'd call elite skaters. They have sniper shots or great vision or off the charts hockey IQ or some combination of them.
Now, I'm not putting Wahlstrom in that group, but besides his scoring ability there are a lot of intangibles and maybe that's what scares some people, but his compete level and hockey IQ are among the best I've seen and as mentioned he can finish. Which is why I have his floor high. I'm not even speculating about his ceiling because that requires too much projection.
fair, they're all elite skaters in the NHL, but no one is confusing Marchand with Kane, Gaudreau or McDavid.
Benn is a very good hopeful comp and to me thats Wahlstrom's best chance of being a gamebreak. Corey Perry is another - crafty, gritty, great puck skills. Just not a ton of those guys who can produce at that level without the athletic explosiveness of the Panarin/Gaudreau/Ovie/Kucherov/Kane types. I'd guess that lack of athletic explosiveness was why he slipped to the isles in the draft if the first place.
Main reason why (my super biased self) would have Islanders a little higher (right around #10) is that I'm much higher on Wilde and Sorokin than he is.
Sorokin has repeated the elite KHL numbers for a while and he's still really young. I'm looking forward to finally getting him over to the Island.
Wilde has some work to do with decision making, but he really put together another great season last year. His upside is through the roof.
By all accounts Wilde had a very good season that raised his stock all around.
And Pronman ranked Koivula ahead of him. That seems like a pretty big development for a guy who wasn't even really on the radar this time last year.
Most of Wahlstrom's goals are greasy goals, and snipes, but you can definitely see some goals created with his feet: 1:10 minute mark, 2:20 also highlights his edge work and tight turns shaking a defender deep in his own zone.
I think fans sometimes hear "not elite skater" and think 3rd line checking forward or something.
His skating is good enough IMO
Link - ( New Window )
He likes Fox a little more than me, but it's well researched and a great in-depth write up. Pretty much paints him as the PP QB for the foreseeable future.
Link - ( New Window )
he agrees with me more than those who don't like Wahlstrom as much.
Some quotes:
By that, I mean that while hes not a blinding skater, Wahlstrom is a powerful enough skater that he doesnt need to rely on offensive-zone setups to score. When he gets moving, he can push defenders back enough with his feet to also remain an extremely dangerous threat off the rush.
On plays like this, you can see Wahlstroms skating at work. Thats a kid who is now roughly 210 pounds, attacking with speed, dropping his lead shoulder, and going right at the defender....
there is a video showing what he means
Hes going to be a star.
great video links to also emphasize what I saw when watching Wahlstrom.

Agree, he's great.
Also, the Wheeler report on Fox I linked above is a must read for any Rangers fan with a subscription.
Seeing what the scouts see is a good view most of us don't see or are not trained to see and you usually get honest opinions from unaffiliated scouts.
"Someone in the comments called Pronman out on the org drop, despite Koivula's rise and the addition of several top prospects.
His response:
It's a fair criticism, and one I know I have to answer. Dobson/Wally are pretty similar to midyear but I moved Iskhakov and Wilde down a lot. That was me grappling with my own biases on the player versus what I was seeing and what plenty of NHL scouts were telling me about the players. It's not a great reason for my subscribers to read, but it's what happened."
He was the highest on Ishakov that I've seen, so him readjusting there makes sense but dropping Wilde is just so odd. Guy had the monster season everyone was hoping for him to have and still drops.
11: LVG
no surprises there, though I think LVG is higher than most have them. no marquee prospects, I guess decent depth though.

Maybe that's why Caufield chose UW, so he wouldn't be the smallest guy on the team ;)
I thinks LOTS of teams are going to regret not drafting him when they had the opportunity. He is scoring bucketfuls at every level he is playing. Habs will be very pleased, IMO.
I like his stuff. He has a projected 3rd line of Lemieux, Andersson, and Kravstov. I'd pay admission to watch that line play. I think they'll become a fan favorite line, if that happens.
He's not a huge fan of Chytil or Andersson, but i think he's wrong.
If you are a Rangers fan this review with a summary from Carpinello is probably worth the annual Athletic fee.
The Rangers were one of the leagues worst five-on-five teams last year, earning an expected goal percentage under 47 percent, and that trio of rookies was part of the problem. Of the Rangers 14 forwards who earned 250 or more five-on-five minutes, the rookies ranked 10th (Chytil), 12th (Howden) and 13th (Andersson) in expected goals percentage. The latter two especially struggled at 41 percent each, and all three were heavily outscored as a result.
For Chytil and Andersson, the issue was on offense, where the Rangers couldnt buy a goal from them or their linemates. Both players had a five-on-five points-per-60 rate under 1, which would be considered under replacement level last season. Howden was a more effective scorer at 1.63 points per 60, a second-line rate, but he comes with the trouble of being one of the leagues worst defensive players. His 3.25 expected goals-against per 60 was the worst in the league last season....

makes sense. It's when you have a bad NHL team and a bad farm that you need to consider a change - front office, coach, something.
BUF - bottom 3rd farm, and missed playoffs consistently
ARI - see BUFF
in theory, when you are a contender your farm should be worse ranked because you are more apt to trade draft picks and young players/prospects for players who can help you immediately.
Devils had a great off-season, but they're toast if Hall leaves.
I am actually looking forward to watching Hughes compete vs NHL players. One of the most interesting story lines for me for the upcoming season. he looked tiny at the draft lottery dwarfed by Kathryn Tappen. Didn't exactly instill fear in defenders.
But Cole Caufield is tiny next to Hughes and he doesn't concern me as much for some reason.
consider the source, but it is being shared on twitter by real sources so who knows.

Makes sense.
He also didn't seem as high om Fox as others like Wheeler are.

Still almost everyone in the top 20 is a "solid prospect" so it indicates the farm is not just top heavy, but also deep.
At least in his opinion

I agree that the Rangers farm system to very deep. In the past, guys like Barron (#21 per Pronman), Lindgren(#23), Rykov (#18)and Henriksson (#14) would all be considered the some of the Rangers top prospects as I think all will play in the NHL. It's truly amazing what Gorton has done.
Good deal, solid, but unspectacular D.
Canes building a powerhouse on D.
maybe they try and trade for an RFA - one of their D like Dougie Hamilton maybe.
I haven't watched much of these guys, so I love to see them hyped the fuck up.
goalies seems so hard to predict IMO too.
I don't know if KHL stats translate to NHL.
and speaking of goalies I haven't heard anyone as bullish on a goalie as they (the consensus) are about Yaro Askarov - he's already being hailed the next Roy.
But I watch Spencer Knight and I see a much more calm and positionally sound goalie. he looks like a young Carey Price to me - "a true if he sees it he'll save it - but even if he doesn't see it there's a good chance he'll be in position to save it" - goalie.
but I'm no expert. especially on goalies.

Bad deal for Werenski. He definitely could've gotten more. Look at what his fellow RFAs are getting.

He asked for the bridge deal, which signifies to me maybe h doesn't want to be in Columbus long term.
Worst case he's a UFA at 25.

Unsurprisingly, but he should still have gotten more than 5M AAV

Something to keep an eye on: there have been ongoing conversations between CAR and ANA about a Justin Faulk trade, but there are still details to be worked out (1/2)...

Faulk has a partial NTC which lists the Ducks and it is believed ANA wishes to pursue an extension. No one will comment on the likelihood of it occurring, but it has been intensely discussed

Standouts in Wilds vs. Rangers in Traverse City:
NYR: Kravtsov (best player on the ice), Kakko (for his highlight reel OT goal mostly)
MIN: Beckman (despite having to serve a teammates 5-min penalty)
Rangers finish group round 2-1. Wild go 0-3.
Still a great individual effort, but in a meaningful game that's a whistle IMO.
LOL
he may change his number. A lot of young players get stuck with high numbers early on and then move up as players leave (if they have another number).

Rangers sitting their top guys today for the 5th place game.
That's generational talent Boo Nieves' number
My only hope now is Charlie McAvoy doesn't change from #73 (I'm hopeful it's a reverse Bergeron tribute) because my daughter grew out of her hockey jerseys (like every year) and decided she wanted to be #73, so I bought jerseys big enough they fit for 2 years (I hope). I have had to buy new jerseys every year the past three years ($400 a set).
Every year the Bauer guy at the uniform fitting says "oh yeah, she'll get two years out of these" (and he laughs his ass off when I walk away)
He's wearing 45 now but I bet he's 24 come the regular season.

Used to be rarely, now they get called all the time.
And he is going to get a lot of shit from his teammates about that mustache. I read they're going to name him captain.

TOR has made seven and eight year offers in the $11M AAV universe but because its a lower AAV and longer term than Auston Matthews, it hasnt been palatable to Marner.

no one really can unless he wants to get shipped out to Ottawa or maybe he gets traded for Laine or something like that.

Gallo: So was caving to Nylander the mistake or giving Matthews a 5 year deal the mistake?
Gord Miller: my honest opinion, signing John Tavares was the mistake. They were the 3rd highest scoring team. They didnt need him.
He has tiers:
Special NHL prospect: Projects as a true NHL star, someone who is among the best players in the league.
Elite NHL prospect: Projects as an impact player, someone who is top 10-15 percent in the NHL at his position.
High-end NHL prospect: Projects as a first-line forward or a top-pair defenseman.
Very good NHL prospect: Projects as a top-six forward, top-four defenseman or starting goaltender in the NHL.
Legit NHL prospect: Projects to be a full-time NHL player in the bottom half of a roster.
Has a chance: The prospect has a chance to make it as a full-time player if some improvements are made.
Depth Players: These are prospects who do not have NHL toolkits, but could be good AHL players and provide depth to an organization.
Only one player in top tier for him (Hughes).
Of the teams I know people on here like:
MTL: 6 players Cole Caufield highest at #6 (in the elite tier)
NYR: 4 players Kakko #2 overall and has him on the elite/special bubble
NYI: 5 players, Dobson the highest #20 overall & he is in the High End Prospect Tier
NJD: 3 players, Hughes #1 overall only player in the special talent tier
BOS: 1 player, Studnicka #101 in the Very Good/Legit Prospect tier
OTT: 6 players, Batherson #29
anyone else?

Kravtsov, Fox, and miller need to look up rank
thanks pj. I would have guessed Kravtsov and Fox, surprised he didn't have Shestyorkin.
Right, forgot the spelling change! Can we just call him Shesty from now on?
Anyway:
Kakko #2 (elite/special bubble)
Kravstov #21 (High End prospect)
Fox #39 (High End/Very Good bubble)
Miller # 48 (Very good prospect)
next time Kakko, Fox and Kravstov likely won't be eligible. Pronman set a 25 NHL game max to be considered. Which is why Chytil (or Kotkaniemi for example) isn't eligible (but Makar is). Miller likely on the next one still even if he joins the Rangers after the WIS season. Probably doesn't get 25 games in.
Miller
Lundkvist
Robertson
Reunanen
Barron
Henriksson
As discussed,,,they are very deep in talented prospects

I think Tavares at $11M>Marner at $8M.
I think signing Andersen was a mistake. Marleau was a mistake, although that's done.
I believe Marner > Tavares and he's 7 years younger.
Marner put up a 94-point season as a 21-year old and it was assist heavy, which at that age is a good thing IMO, he was the one creating offense.
most of the metrics I believe also favor Marner over Matthews FWIW - which is the crux of this stalemate.
And yea, Marner wants $11M (at least) but only for 6 years or whatever Matthews got. Not longer, he (or his "camp") view longer term as a concession.
First, I think both are great players and I'd take either on my team in a heartbeat.
But I think they benefited each other, both eclipsed career highs, but with Tavares being a mature player already and Marner being just 21, I think his upside is just higher when Tavares IMO is what he is going to be.
My initial post was probably aggressive. I'd take eight years of Tavares over eight years of Marner, even at their respective ages.
Both are great platers, I can see the age thing swinging views.
Being a converted forward that surprises me.
Every time I have seen him he's been quick to activate or join the rush.
might take some time.

that might be exactly what they get, the longer they go without signing him the worse it is for all involved.
I think MTL messed up with the offer sheet to Aho and should have made one to Marner. Though I suspect the offer sheet to Aho was really a favor to the agent to get CAR moving.
In case people don't follow the Habs Leafs rivalry has reach new levels this off-season with the sandpaper-personified Domi family trolling Toronto all summer.
Subban is still one of my favorite players to watch and an incredible human being, but I guess he's not the most coachable as a player.

MB identified the Weber trade as his best trade as #Habs GM. Called it a culture-changing move.
When asked if it's the move he'll be most remembered for, MB said:

He stood out at the rookie tournament in Traverse City.
Spencer Knight #2, I love Spencer Knight's potential, but FL just signed Bobrovsky long-term so no clue how Knight sees the NHL if it's not via trade.
He is a young Carey Price IMO. So positionally sound, calm in net, athletic, great with the puck, I haven't seen enough of Askarov, but if scouts see Askarov as measurably better than Knight I can't wait to see more.
#1 is Thatcher Demko (VAN).
Another American (like Knight) who is very athletic for his size. I think Knight is better though.
Igor Shesterkin #3. His size and occasional leaky pucks are the only negatives.
Cayden Primeau (Keith's son) for MTL is #4
All 4 are in the "Very Good NHL Prospect" tier.
other relevant ones for fans here (and all are in the very good/legit bubble):

The combined cap hit of John Tavares, Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner is $40.489366 million. The salary cap for this year is $81.5 million.
and they're still probably the Bruins bitch in the playoffs.

Charlie McAvoy has agreed to terms with BOS. Three-year deal, $4.9M AAV. Very similar to Zach Werenskis three-year, $5M AAV deal with CBJ. McAvoy could make up the $300K difference because his Year 3 salary, and Qualifying Offer base, is $7.3M, $300K more than Werenskis.
and they're still probably the Bruins bitch in the playoffs.
If they even get that far in the playoffs with that defense. They are a lock to get 100+ points but at playoff time their defense is seemingly an even bigger question this year vs. last year. Gardner, Zaitsev, and Hainsey each played over 20 mpg last year. Barrie will probably replace most of their point production but they are counting on a bunch of journeyman young guys (and Ceci) to replace the minutes. And if Barrie has a good year good luck resigning him next year, they can barely afford him now with Colorado retaining $.
For a team that's top heavy, and mostly with young guys, they are very win now. And with no more picks to deal a lot of pressure is riding on this group to come together and improve (and specifically on Babcock).
For BBI hockey fans:
Kravtsov and Fox (NYR) also top 10
on the list:
Brannstrom (OTT)
Necas (CAR)
Logan Brown (OTT)
Ty Smith (NJD)
And
Suzuki/Poehling (MTL)
Dobson (NYI)
Bean (CAR)
were honorable mention

kind of symbiotic with Eli leaving center stage of the area sports scene today and Hughes/Kakko entering.
