Areas on the team to strengthen via waiver wire?

Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/12/2019 10:19 am
I was looking over the roster and depth chart this morning. What sticks out is how young this team is. But I also wonder where the Giants will be actively scanning the waiver wire.

Gettleman was VERY active last year when the roster cuts were made, claiming SIX players off of waivers.
OL depth

to start with.
Usually depends on the injuries.

OL, WR, CB (if Baker out for a while)

LB, Edge, Safety.
LB/DL seems like the obvious ones....OL too but we know

how bad waiver wire OL are in a league dearth of talent. I'm actually satisfied with the back half of WRs for now.
I think we will be looking for

experienced backup Olinement- as the Giants see that their starting group is pretty good and they do not want a lack of experience in the reserve role killing them.

A Vet tailback for leadership and stability for sure. Perkins is a JAG and played himself off the team. Gallman is set but rest is open for a VET backup (seasoned Vet).

I would think a VET WR could be on the radar too.
Nearly every team struggles with OL depth

I wouldn't hold my breath if you are looking for major upgrades via cuts

My opinion, I think this team could use more edge rushing talent and another safety
Inside LB

I think Goodson is pretty much an afterthought at this point. Connelly has clearly passed him. If there is a coverage guy available we may just snatch him up.

OT we seem to be very thin right now.

safety behind Peppers and Bethea, you have Love a few guys that you dont want on the field for long stretches.

Returners - I think we can use an upgrade especially at PR.

I think we are also looking for unique guys for the offense. Like a jack of all trades hybrid type. The Eric Dungey project never got off the ground.

Overall I am happy with the roster and some of the depth. Obviously is a starter type is available you will have to look at almost any position. We are set for the most part on O, WR is a need for the offseason. you are not going to find a starter as a FA. D is they can find a pass rush specialist...lol. they get cut all the time...lol.
LB and WR

but I doubt there will be good options available this summer.

Overall not the most talented group, but we seem to have "depth" at WR, some interesting bottom of the roster guys and then some.
Pass rush number one priority

they should be less active on waivers and more active on trades

if a WR with some upside shakes free (like Coleman last year), or a LB, or a S, or a RB, or even a backup OL. The recent Eli Harold trade isn't a bad example of the type of thing they should have their eyes open for. Also Duke Johnson would have been a nice addition of another playmaker for the offense + ST. A conditional 3rd/4th was a little steep but those are the types of guys they should have an eye out for.

I'm sure they will claim 1 or 2 developmental types too, like all teams do, but this roster seems deeper than last year's and that should be a learning experience since none of those guys really did all that much beyond ST.
Have to set your expectations reasonably

I don't think you can really expect to find too much pass rush help or quality OL depth. Probably two of the most prized assets for any team. Where I think you're more likely to see some guys shake free that could be of interest to the Giants:

1. Depth level vet WR
2. Vet safety
3. RB
4. PR/KR
Nobody works the wire like Gettleman

I'm holding out hope that Keelan Doss gets waived by the Raiders and signed by us, but it's looking like he'll make their roster.
Too early to call, but I don’t think it will be many.
Spider56 : 8/12/2019 1:55 pm : link
This years roster is stronger than last year and they’ve been building chemistry thru the spring / summer. If all the kids continue to grow and play well in the preseason games, I think it will only be 1 or 2 added to the original 53, most likely driven by injuries.
Jake Carlock question
5BowlsSoon : 8/12/2019 2:44 pm : link
Seeing that he played safety, could he be someone who might have more success covering a TE or a RB out of the backfield? I’m tired of seeing TEs having career days ag us. I don’t think Davis is any good. He didn’t look good last year and I’ve not read anywhere giving me hope.
Depth on the ol if possible

Maybe wr and of course any injuries will dictate what we look at
WR and a punter

will determine what DG is looking for. Right now WR seems worst hit. But after Tate and Shepard there are a bunch of guys that seem equal and that is probably all you will see on the waiver wire.

They may look for a returner - but I thought Ballentine looked pretty explosive on K/Os. Not sure about TJ Jones on punts....
Punter’s
mittenedman : 8/13/2019 8:27 am : link
a good one.
Dixon even fakes the camera man out with his short punts. Doesnt boom them the way others do and not much touch around the GL either.

The Giants went from Wing to Dixon and both guys are pretty bad.
