longtime Yankee farmhand, took a comebacker off the head a few years ago. Nice story. Probably not a difference-maker, but if someone is going to pitch garbage time innings it might as well be a rookie.

arcarsenal : 8/12/2019 10:38 am : link
Would love to see Pax go 6-7 today. Masa did a fantastic job yesterday of preserving the pen - all we needed was a fully rested Chapman to pitch the 9th.

Going to need our arms today with the double header. Every inning counts and it's time for Pax to get on a roll going into the later part o the year into the postseason.
Plus, I want to see Paxton build some momentum

After coming back from the knee injury, every time he's had a few good starts in a row, he has a stinker. Need more consistency out of him. He's had two very good starts in a row, now let's have a third.

CC is the closest of all these guys. He's not going to require a rehab assignment - they'll just re-insert him into the rotation.

He's really toughing it out - he's going to be in a ton of pain regardless. It's just basically that it's either mildly tolerable - or crippling to the point where he just can't pitch effectively.

But, he did throw a BP session and felt reasonably well - so he appears to be pretty close.

Stanton was transferred to the 60-day, which seemed to cause some panic or spread the notion that his season is over. It's not - this is just bookkeeping to open up a roster spot. It'll be retroactive, so he'll still be eligible to come off before the end of the regular season and they expect that they'll see him again in September.

Severino just did a 25-30 pitch BP on Friday, IIRC - and said he felt better than he expected. Not sure if the Yanks are going to go with a plan that has Severino ramp himself up out of the pen or has him do it in Scranton - but as of now, barring a setback, the expectation is that Severino could potentially be stretched back out and ready to pitch as a starter by late-Sept.

Betances is sort of close to Severino as far as progress goes. His timetable is probably similar.

I'm not sure I'd expect much (if anything) from Montgomery this year - but Loaisiga appears to be close to returning.

Voit is going to depend on whether or not he needs surgery.

Surgery means season over. So, we'll have to hope he can avoid that.

Eddy will be back this year - but he's going to need about a month.

Hicks is progressing a bit, but I don't believe there's a timetable on him yet.

Welp.....

Stanton is working out and hitting on a tee. No setbacks is a form of progress in itself.

Severino threw off a mound Friday for the first time since March and they said he feels great.

Betances will throw from a mound for the first time in months today. Cross your fingers.

Haven't heard any updates on Montgomery since he was shut down a while ago. Don't expect him to return this year.

Voit, they still haven't decided on surgery yet. He's working out but not doing any baseball activities yet.

Sabathia was supposed to throw a bullpen session yesterday, don't know how it went.

Hicks won't throw for a couple of more days and then they'll see how he feels.
Voit ran today and expects to take swings tomorrow

Rick in Dallas : 8/12/2019 10:59 am : link
I dont think as it stands now you can count on Sevy and Betances for the post season if it is late September.
Worse injury season that I can remember for the Yankees.
What a miraculous year for DJLM, Gio and Tauchman.
Also great year for German.
Judge needs to get straightened out for postseason.
I have really enjoyed watching this Yankee team play this year.
Boone should be coach of the year IMHO
Go Yankees
Cashman has said Severino will not be in the pen
Greg from LI : 8/12/2019 11:00 am : link
But I can see a scenario where they use him in tandem with German, who will reach his inning limit shortly. Severino for 3-4 innings and then German for 2-3 could combine to be a pretty awesome duo.

Hah... I think we were safely able to write them off long before today.

At this point, we're in great shape division-wise, but the wins are still very important because we're going to want home field if we eventually wind up meeting the 'Stros in the ALCS.

Needless to say, there's a very long road between here and there, but.... there's no time for the Yanks to take their feet off the gas. Have to keep the pedal down. I want at least 3 of 4 here vs. this O's team.

The way I think of it is that Andujar is a hitter first. He's not a thirdbaseman. Between DJ and Gio, we have third covered. So, if they can salvage him at DH or 1B, they should keep him. His bat is too good and he's too young to let go.

They certainly could. He's a fantastic hitter. I think people are too willing to just sell him off now.

The fit will be tough. You'd love to have the DH more open for him, but if the Yanks decide they want to pick up the option on Eddy, that's going to be nearly impossible. They'll need to use that spot for either of the 1B's or for Stanton... meaning a DH spot for Miggy full time is going to be hard.

It's not an easy decision.... but Urshela is really giving them no choice but to play him @ 3B nearly every day going forward.

But they're not going to just give Miggy away and I think they'll try to find a way to keep him if they can. Trading him this winter would be selling low, IMO... I don't know if I see Cashman doing that.

I've thought about that, but other late bloomers like Bautista hit for some power in the minors - .283/.374/.466 in the minors for Bautista, .328/.389/.542 for JD Martinez (who then didn't hit much until his fourth MLB season at age 27), .276/.366/.472 for Josh Donaldson.

Hard to find anyone who's made so dramatic a turnaround as Urshela.

.281/354/.380 in the minors, had a few nondescript MLB seasons before having a pair of huge years at ages 31-32 for the Orioles, .317/.418/.503 in 2003 and .340/.419/.562 in 2004.

What about Brosius? Not a terrible comp for Urshela.

I don't think he was ever considered a big time prospect nor did he put up big minor league numbers, and it wasn't until his final year in Oakland that he really posted strong offensive numbers.

Had a really nice year for the '98 team, played a big role in the championship season... but then he tailed back off and he was done a few years later.

There's actually not a huge difference.

They both played 11 seasons in the minors.

Brosius triple slashed .286/.360/.468 in about 2500 AB's.

67 HR, 359 RBI.

Urshela...

3387 AB's... .270/.306/.399

72 HR, 427 RBI.

There might be better comps for Gio - I just can't really think of many others. A unique career arc to be sure.

No? Are you new to Yankees threads? Lol.

Yes, he's struggling - he also just got off IL - and he's the first guy everyone piles on and goes wild over the second he's not launching HR's into seats at a historic pace.

Greg, to be fair, he wasn't hitting before his injury. I am not a Gary hater but his average has dropped considerably.

arcarsenal : 8/12/2019 3:39 pm : link
I'll take that from Britton. That's a tough situation to walk into and get out of with just 1 run.

But why would you expect him to start hitting again immediately upon being activated?

arcarsenal : 8/12/2019 3:46 pm : link
I have such a tough time with Britton - he always makes me nervous, but then you look at his game logs and realize he's gone 8 straight outings now without allowing an earned run.

His ERA is in the low 2's. But his FIP is over 4 and his WHIP is over 1.200 - so I guess it makes sense. He loses the zone often and seems to walk a tightrope a lot... but, he's getting the job done for the most part.

I think I'll feel a lot better when Betances is entrenched back in that 8th inning slot and we can deploy Britton as a mid inning leverage guy like we have done with Ottavino.
Anyone else remember when Gary was an MVP candidate this year?

Meant to add of course, we need to have patience coming off the injury, I agree.
arc, I've change my mind on Britton
adamg : 8/12/2019 3:49 pm : link
I see now why he's so effective. His WHIP can be high and still won't fuck him up, because he's such a ground ball pitcher. He can easily get out of a jam with double play balls and the occasional strike out. Chappy and Betances are better. And even Otto might be better. But, Britton is still a huge weapon, especially in that kind of spot.
In his last 720 PAs in 170 games
arniefez : 8/12/2019 3:49 pm : link
Gary Sanchez has a 210 BA and a .298 OBP. Not good. He has 129 hits. 43 of them HRs.
And given how the new balls are ruining fly ball pitchers
adamg : 8/12/2019 3:51 pm : link
Britton is even more valuable, since he's unlikely to be effected by the changes.
.
arcarsenal : 8/12/2019 3:57 pm : link
I think the way our pen is constructed, Britton fits well - we don't need to ask too much of him. And we'll need to ask even less of him if Dellin gets back next month.

It's just frustrating when he really loses the zone... but he's a groundball factory and an ideal guy to put on the mound if you're in a jam and need to get a DP ball.

Of course, it will take a few days. It is just the pitches he swings at are nowhere near strikes. He swung at 3 96 mph pitches above the zone yesterday which have been a walk. He will not see good pitches until he stops swinging at sliders that were never strikes and balls over his head. He is far to good a hitter to be swinging at pure junk. Good hitters get fooled because pitchers are good. But he swings at a lot, and I mean a lot, of crap for a guy of his ability. We all know how good he is. And that is the frustrating part and what people see.
.

Also don't be surprised if Adams and/or Lail end up on the mound tonight. Going to need middle relief innings.

about how Marcus Thames and one of the other coaches worked with him to significantly raise the angle on his stroke. He took that to heart, and quickly discovered that this was translating into a higher exit velocity, not just a better launch angle. It may not be any more complicated than that, but it's still amazing, and huge credit goes to the Yankee coaching staff as well as to Urshela.

I'm not impressed. #1, I don't think he is a smart baseball player. He makes silly mistakes that well seasoned AAA players shouldn't. He has average tools, at best. I can see him being some team's bench infielder, but not with the Yanks. Now Cash sees something and the Yanks have been turning people around. But I just don't see it.

Not a fan. Way too many stupid mistakes and he's not doing anything otherwise to warrant a spot.

Prefer Estrada big time. But, I understand that they'd like Thairo to continue playing regularly - and that there's not really a spot for him to do that here. So, I get why Valera is up here.. but it feels like he does something dumb in nearly every game he starts.

Nice sweep.
Valera is completely unimpressive

This is what I see. Estrada will be a MLB starter and it is better for him to play every day.

Maybe Valera had bad coaching, or maybe he is simply not a student of the game. But he does make head scratching mistakes.
What a horrid team the Orioles are.

Pathetic. Nice wins today, as we just outhit them again. German tomorrow.
Yeah, it's nice to win the DH

Props to Jints.

And props to Booney for getting through these games with 7 innings coming from the no name relievers. Two games and we saved the pen. Otto and Green combined for fewer than 20 pitches, so they can go tomorrow. And Britton only threw 11 pitches, so he can probably go tomorrow too.

Chappy will get the day off after two days straight. But overall, good bullpen management for the DH.

Nice to sweep them, but given how horrid they are, still concerning that we would give up 13 runs to them on the day ...

Meh. Cessa, Mantiply, Cortes, and Lail gave up all the runs other than Paxton's 3. I wouldn't put too much stock in the O's offense.

Their pitching and fielding sucks. Their batting is pretty decent, aside from the black hole of Kris Davis.

Here it is, Gary's reaction. He's basically begging the orioles to IBB him the rest of the year, haha.

Beautiful....Thorne is a prognosticator with the IBB. Jim Palmer just shaking his head in disbelief. Paulie showing up in the booth was a classic.

Funny part is how cold Torres was coming into the games, which was probably the muscle pull, but crazy how he just kills the Orioles.

Thorne is great.. he's a good sport about it; have to respect that. Loved him as a hockey guy when I was younger.

I feel terrible for the guy... imagine having to watch that O's team all season long.

I'm at the point where I just want to beat them a couple more times and leave them alone until next year. The beatings we're putting on these guys are just brutal. They're so bad.

Trey Mancini just looks like a tremendous scumbag.

Probably a nice guy... but I can't get past the name and the face. He looks like a guy you'd find in a dive bar passed out in a stall.

As a general rule I don't trust men named Trey.

He has 29 HRs - not too shabby for any player on any team.
According to MLB Network...
shockeyisthebest8056 : 8/13/2019 9:19 am : link
the top 3 spots for most HRs in a season by one player against one team are now held by Yankees.

1 - Gehrig (14)
2 - Gleyber Torres (13)
3 - Roger Maris (13)
