Beal might be a Bust

tb7117 : 8/12/2019 12:58 pm
I believe this guy had a shoulder problem in college.Injured/ reinjured it last summer. This guy is not 180lbs. soaking wet. How will he hold up tackling 220 plus running backs. I hear he has speed/talent. What good is that if he can`t get on the field and a glass shoulder. Wish him well.

I honestly didn't know if it was a joke or not based on some of the other threads.

Yes, Beal could absolutely be a bust. Anyone can be a bust.

Here is the draft success (from one study) and success simply means starts 50% of their games.

Beal only had a 24% chance of becoming a consistent starter before he even signed his contract.

Quote:
Historic Success Chart

The numbers show us the following outline for finding consistent starters:

1st Round - OL (83%) LB (70%) TE (67%) DB (64%) QB (63%) WR (58%) RB (58%) DL (58%)

2nd Round - OL (70%) LB (55%) TE (50%) WR (49%) DB (46%) QB (27%) DL (26%) RB (25%)

3rd Round - OL (40%) TE (39%) LB (34%) DL (27%) WR (25%) DB (24%) QB (17%) RB (16%)

4th Round - DL (37%) TE (33%) OL (29%) LB (16%) WR(12%) DB (11%) RB (11%) QB (8%)

5th Round - TE (32%) DB (17%) WR (16%) OL (16%) DL (13%) RB (9%) LB (4%) QB (0%)

6th Round - TE (26%) OL (16%) DL (13%) WR (9%) DB (8%) RB (6%) LB (5%) QB (0%)

7th Round - DB (11%) OL (9%) QB (6%) WR (5%) DL (3%) LB (2%) RB (0%) TE (0%)

Don't expect that to ever, ever, ever happen again.

I can't think of a single other example of someone being given up on, damned near finished, resurrecting their career as a Giant.

Webster is often overlooked as a reason 2007 happened. That team BARELY backed into the playoffs, they gave up EIGHTY points in their first 2 games and were decimated with injuries, CB unit hit hard all season, including Webster himself, but after Sam Madison got hurt in the last game of the season, Webster returned to start and DOMINATED.

I don't think that they properly fixed his org injury in college did they? I am not surprised it got re-injured. Plus I don't think the two are anywhere related. Any player at any time can pull a hamstring. Thy have to give it enough time to heal or it will be an ongoing thing.

Now if he hurts his shoulder again then we can talk bust.
You know who else is a bust

Is the guy supposed to take the field just to placate the fans?? If there's anything you want to protect speed guys from - it is hamstring injuries.

I said it at the time of the draft, I didn't like taking someone with a known and recent shoulder injury. The shoulder is a delicate joint and probably the most susceptible to re-injury. Sure enough, right out of the gate he re-injured his shoulder. He may have not played last year anyway, but that certainly doesn't help.

His hammy is a completely unrelated injury. I believe it is way too early to call him a bust or even injury prone. But, he certainly isn't having a great start to his career.

rookie year - he missed all of the pre-season and the first four games prior to torching the league.

Let's face facts, if Reese was the GM, just about everyone would be lambasting him for picking a guy with the 6th pick in the 3rd round (what it turned out to be) who missed his entire first season, and is now on the shelf for all of training camp. Me personally, it's just bad luck, same with all the WR injuries, but most on here seemed to blame Reese for guys getting injured......

This is my concern more than the hamstring. I still think Collins will never be the same player again because leading with his shoulder is how he tackles. It isn't as much of a concern with Beal because as a CB, he should be wrapping guys up, but reinjuring a body part still raises a red flag.

To the OP
Torrag : 8/12/2019 4:37 pm : link
Is there concern Beal hasn't been able to stay healthy thus far? Yes. Does that make him a bust when he hasn't played a down yet for the team? No. He should get an opportunity soon.

If he continues to get injured repeatedly over an extended period of time going forward then we'll have to re-evaluate. If you can't stay on the field your roster slot eventually goes to someone that can. Still too early to make that call though.

Yeah, what scares me is if he tore his labrum twice (I don't know this btw, just guessing based on dislocations needing surgery), all types of motion, flexibility, and dexterity gets dicey.

Getting his arms around a big, fast, moving target puts a lot of stress on the joint. I've heard a dislocated shoulder described as "tearing the hinges of the door."

He's a young guy with plenty of time off between the procedures, hopefully he's good and healed and this is in the past soon for him.

Sorry Dave, responded to wrong poster above. I agree it s not unreasonable to hope a guy who missed all of last year and is missing time again is not injury prone
I think the more articulate way to frame this
bhill410 : 8/12/2019 8:15 pm : link
Is they have the guy for 4 years. Year 1 he was injured for entire year, year 2 he is looking like he may miss majority if not all of training camp. You never know but that isn’t a good harbringer for either a healthy year or productive year for a young player. That means we are likely getting 2 years for a third round pick - he could still be worth it but it’s an unfortunate used of resources at this point.
Second contracts..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/12/2019 8:27 pm : link
get talked up a lot as the Holy Grail, but there are many 2nd contracts that don't come at a steep price. And unless Beal is a steady starter and impact player, it won't cost a bankload to keep him.

So far he has not done a thing once his hammy is healed
Bluesbreaker : 8/12/2019 8:54 pm : link
he may have a hard time getting on the field .
Once he does he has to produce show he is worthy
