Daniel Jones had encouraging red zone period today w the 2s. After Eli Manning 1st-string O struggled to put ball in end zone outside of a Wayne Gallman run, Jones threw 3 TDs to Russell Shepard (slant), T.J. Jones (fade) & Garrett Dickerson. GD also made 1-handed catch earlier

Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan)
8/12/19, 2:49 PM
Your Daily Jonesing: Solid day. He looked composed while completing 10-of-12 passes. T.J. Jones his favorite target with four catches. Only regret for DJ might be that one of his misses was a wide open deep ball to Alex Wesley. Regardless, a good day for the rookie QB

Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan)

WR T.J. Jones has done nothing but impress since arriving. Big plays in preseason game. Four catches at Mondays practice including nice TD from Jones on fade. Watch out!

Nick Gates putting together solid practices at LT after struggles vs Jets. Had been playing guard

Other practice nuggets:
CB Antonio Hamilton got first-team reps w/Baker + Beal out

Giants FB could factor into passing game. Saw Eli Penny catch ball vs Jets. Has done it all summer. Again on Monday w/screen pass from Daniel Jones that had chance for 60-yd TD

Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21)
8/12/19, 1:56 PM
Practice notes:
-Eli completed a few passes in the first-team period that definitely would have been sacks, which is why I try not to get hung up on stats. He was pretty good today, but had a rough red-zone period at the end of practice.
-Jones was much better than yesterday...

Nate Stupar dropped an INT on a bad pass by Jones, but otherwise he was accurate. He had a really nice fade to TJ Jones in the red zone.
-TJ Jones continues to open eyes.
-Janoris Jenkins had a slow start to camp but he's starting to turn it up. Had a few break-ups/good coverage

Cool point from Bettch after the TD that Love gave up where he was picked "You (Baker) gotta wash him more, and you (Love) gotta align with leverage, and slide over the top, make the hit and knock _ back"...

Another look at it here, you can see Love slowly moving inside as the ball is snapped and Baker's physicality does not move the WR off his pick path enough. Ultimately these 2 need to square this away, bc I have not seen as many "Banjo" calls as other teams...

Banjo being where the outside CB reads the release and takes the outside route, inside DB reads and takes the inside route. I bet as the season goes on, Love will align a half/full step deeper to vary the depths, etc

Can see Love read the release of WR2 as he shuffles, then in a solid peddle and see him transition from the Half-Zone Turn to good closing speed for the PBU. He played mostly BC at ND and was not asked to do this is space but that does not mean he CAN'T do it

Busbee Yahoo Sports: Read and React: Best-case, worst-case scenarios for all NFC teams

New York Giants
Best case: Either Eli Manning or Daniel Jones comes through at quarterback for New York, giving the team some measure of competence as they transition out of one era and into another. That's still not enough to get them to the playoffs. Seven wins are your ceiling here.
Worst case: How tough is your stomach? If Manning struggles, and then Jones struggles after that, this is going to be one of the nastiest seasons in recent Giants history. Not even Saquon Barkley churning through lines like they were crme brle could make up for an entirely possible QB meltdown.

Clark The Ringer: Move Over, Rookies: Midlevel Veterans Are Having a Moment

According to a study from Over the Cap, a whopping 62 percent of NFL players were on their rookie deals last season. The study also found that the average cost of a player on his first contract was $1.06 million, compared with $5.85 million for players beyond their first contract, which means a veteran team will always be a relative term. Even the Patriots relatively ancient roster (made older by Tom Brady) had an average age of 27.9 years, oldest in the league...

A young, cheap player who still runs a 4.3 40-yard dash is probably the best building block to stopping the NFLs ever-improving offenses, but there are more ways to slow those units. I asked 35-year-old New York Giants safety Antoine Bethea, a three-time Pro Bowler, about experiencing the NFLs offensive boom throughout his career. He started his career in 2006, a year before the Patriots shattered offensive records and has witnessed firsthand nearly every offensive trend over the past 13 years. But what Im interested in is how veterans might be better equipped to fight back against modern NFL offenses, particularly the play-action-heavy offenses that are now en vogue across the league. Veteran guys, older guys might get slower in their steps, but the one thing about them is they have great eyes and great technique. The veteran will be faster because he knows what hes looking at, said Bethea. Obviously you have the politics of football, the business of football, but guys who have seen different things are going to be successful. That stuff is priceless.

Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher tells me that training a players eyes is perhaps the most important thing when defending against innovative offensesnot just on play-action, but with nearly any deceptive wrinkle that a modern offense can throw at a defense. All that stuff: Play-action, naked bootleg, its all eyes, he said. I think you can train eyes. Some guys have dirty eyes and can see ghosts, but you can train them.

CAROLINA
Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer)
8/12/19, 1:48 PM
Five takeaways from the 17th team I've seen, the Carolina Panthers ...
1) The team's been pleasantly surprised with the progress of the left side of its OL, with Daryl Williams and Greg Van Noten manning those spots. Obviously, having those two spots taken care of would go a long way towards getting line fixed
2) Curtis Samuel might be the player who's taken the biggest step forward, as he continues to evolve from athlete into receiver. The staff's noticed all the extra work he's done, and him primed for a breakout third year in the league
3) Finding a backup RB is a focus, with Jordan Scarlett, Reggie Bonnafon and Cameron Artis-Payne vying for the job. The hope is they can take some of the mileage -- but not touches -- off Christian McCaffrey. Ideally, they'd delegate a lot of his short-yardage and goal-line work
4) Second-year OLB Marquis Haynes is poised to make a big jump on the other side of the ball, as a great fit for Ron Rivera's new 3-4 front. And that would give the team real good depth at those edge spots (with Bruce Irvin, Mario Addison, and Brian Burns there)
5) Eric Reid has emerged as a real leader for the secondary, and the hope is his presence helps Tre Boston be the playmaker at FS the Panthers think he can be in his return to Carolina. Forcing turnovers was a weak spot last year, and the hope is Boston addresses that

I wonder if the same people who are appalled at the prospect of No.4 asking for $40M per year but likely getting $32-34M are upset about Derek Carr, Jimmy G., Matthew Stafford and Kirk Cousins making $25-$28M when that was viewed as the top of the market.. Check their resumes..

dak - 32 wins since 2016 (2nd in NFL)

Largest QB Contracts
Per/Yr Wins Since '16
R. Wilson $35M 29
B. Roethlisberger $34M 31
A. Rodgers $33.5M 20
C. Wentz $32M 23
M. Ryan $30M 28

Im so confused. If QB wins arent a stat, how are we supposed to judge QBs?
Passing yards? Those can be inflated with garbage yards in the 4Q when trailing
Passer Rating? TD:INT ratio? Rings (Kinda like QB wins, right?)?

Last year, Raiders acquired a 2019 seventh-round pick when trading safety Shalom Luani to Seahawks. They could be on opposite end of similar move at guard. Gabe Jackson (knee) and Denzelle Good (back) are injured. Richie Incognito is suspended for first two games

1969 Giants Preview:

Homer Jones provides the Giants' aerial game with his electricity. His catches are the talk of the league, and his speed the despair of any cornerback who's had to chase him. Jones may line up at split end a few pounds lighter this year, after having a few sluggish bouts with dropped passes last year. Joe Morrison is listed as the starting flanker, but Allie Sherman probably realized that his versatile offensive captain was slowing down when the coach traded for Pete Gent of the Cowboys. Gent is tall and fast - and injury-prone - but if he stays healthy, he could be just the man to run those deep patterns and take some of the double-coverage pressure off Jones. Morrison can better serve the cause by coming in as a troubleshooter wherever Allie needs him at the moment. If Gent shows he can handle the job, Aaron Thomas will stay at tight end where he, too, can draw attention. Butch Wilson and Freeman White are the extras at tight end, and second-year man Joe Koontz and rookie Rich Houston from East Texas State will be trying to catch on as deep receivers.

Ward Cuff WB/K D4-Marquette 1937NYG 1937-1945 Born 8-131912 Died 12-24-2002

Talk of Fame: Ward Cuff:

Never heard of him? Get in line. Cuff played 11 seasons, from 1937 through 1947, and he played with the Giants, Cardinals and Packers, with all but two years spent in New York. The guy was durable, versatile and invaluable capable of playing a variety of positions.
On offense, he served mostly as a wingback in coach Steve Owens A-formation offense, which was a variation of the single wing, Cuff was called on to run, catch and, of course, kick and the results speak for themselves. Playing in over 100 games, he averaged 5.4 yards a carry for his career, once carried 80 times in a season and produced 3,410 yards from scrimmage.
Oh, yeah, he twice led the Giants in pass receptions, too.

But why stop there? A former heavyweight boxing champion at Marquette University where he was the schools record-holder in the javelin, Cuffs considerable athletic abilities allowed him to play almost anywhere.
And everywhere.
So Owen lined him up as a defensive back, and Cuff responded by setting a Giants record in 1938 with a 96-yard interception return. Then, three years later, he led the NFL in interception return yards. The guy was so adroit that when former Giants owner Wellington Mara in 1976 picked his all-time Giants; team, Cuff was one of his four defensive backs.

Ward was outstanding as a runner, a receiver and a defensive back, said Owen. Above all, he was an Iron Man who could play with so many injuries that he often seemed to be taped from head to toe before he put on his uniform.
But it was special teams where he excelled, with Cuff returning kicks (he averaged 12 yards per punt return) as well as converting them. The guy was a multi-skilled handyman, but the truth is: He was more much more than that.
Pure and simple, he was the premier placekicker of his era, leading or sharing the NFL in field goals four times and finishing in the top five eight times. He set a Giants career scoring record, was named All-Pro five times (including three first-team selections) and had his number 14 jersey retired by the Giants (it was later given to Y.A., then re-retired after he left the game).

Decades later, league historian and Pro Football Journal's Chris Willis, head of the Research Library at NFL Films, named Cuff the first-team kicker on his list of pre-World War II all-stars.
Willis admits that Cuff is a borderline Hall of Famer, and Id agree. The guy was an indispensable piece of a Giants team that won the 1938 NFL championship and four times was a division king. Yet his value lay in his versatility, not his productivity, with Cuff able to play so many positions that when the Giants lost leading rusher and scorer Bill Paschal for the 1944 league championship game, Cuff moved from wingback to running back to replace him.
Result: He carried 12 times for 76 yards and a score in a 14-7 Giants loss.

Cuff played in four league championship games with New York, winning one (1938), and while his versatility was remarkable it was his contributions as a kicker that gains your attention. Because if, as Willis contends, Ward Cuff was the best of the pre-World War II era, he deserves to have his candidacy heard by Hall-of-Fame voters.
No, I dont think it happens not even with the Hall expected to endorse 10 seniors for the Centennial Class of 2020. And you already know why: The Hall is and has been blind to kickers. So it almost certainly will be blind to Ward Cuff, too.
I have a lot of fond memories of him, Wellington Mara once said.

Packers.com: Old Interview:

On losing to the Packers, 27-0, in the 1939 NFL Championship Game played in Milwaukee: (Giants coach) Steve Owen wasnt with us that week. His mother died and he went home. The team was kind of down in the dumps. It was windy and stormy. It was a terrible day to play football. I remember I had a bad week before that. I split my hip-pointer open. I had about seven stitches in that thing. They kicked off to us and I caught that (darn) kickoff and went up through there and Baby Ray hit me just as we opened the wedge. He hit me right on the hip and took out every one of those stitches. We went back into the huddle and while they were calling the play, I was throwing up. But I kept playing.

.A product of Marquette University where he was one of the stars of its 1937 Cotton Bowl team, Cuff was a back and a kicker. He played with the Giants from 1937 to 1945, winning an NFL championship in 1938 and losing in three other title games. Two of the losses came against the Packers in 1939 and 1944. Cuff also was the Giants career scoring leader when he left. Before the 1946 season, he requested a trade because he had kids in grade school and no longer wanted to move his family from his home in Milwaukee to New York just for the football season. In April 1947, the Packers purchased Cuff from the Cardinals. At the end of the season, Cuff retired as a player and became football coach at Green Bay Central Catholic High School. He held the post for four seasons and compiled a 23-4-2 record before becoming an assistant coach at Oregon State. In 1976, former owner Wellington Mara picked Cuff as one of four defensive backs on his all-time Giants team.

Obituary: He held off college for a couple of years to help take care of his dad, who had cancer, then attended Northeastern Oklahoma Agriculture and Mechanics college for two years, winning state championships in '33 and '34 transferring to the University of Arkansas in 1935 where he continued to dominate the football field. In 1937, he was signed by the New York Giants where he played from 1937-1941 and 1946-1947, playing in 3 NFL championships and winning one in 1938. In 1942, Lunday enlisted into World War II joining the Air Corps, serving as an aircraft engineer until 1946

He had a key interception to hold off the Redskins in the 1938 Championship Game:

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Redskins advanced to the New York 26, but Leemans intercepted a pass to end the threat. The Giants pinned the Redskins back at their five with a punt. Washington moved to the 40 before LB Kayo Lunday intercepted a pass for the Giants.

Players with unsigned tenders, like Jadeveon Clowney, can't be traded until under contract. This effectively gives Clowney a no trade clause. Clowney could refuse to sign his franchise tender if the Texans tried to trade to an undesirable team

Joel Corry (@corryjoel)

Franchise players who dont sign long term by the 7/15 deadline are prohibited from signing a multi-year contract until after the 2019 regular season, which ends on 12/29. This prohibition on signing a long term deal also applies to any team acquiring Jadeveon Clowney in a trade

You have to look at 2 things right off the bat. One, I would assume if he is traded it would be an NFC team. I am not saying O'Brien will bd fired but I feel he is on the hot seat and isn't he the GM? He made the playoffs in 3 or the last 4 years but expectations are high and everybody seems to want more. Two, what team has the cap space to take on that amount of money? I'd assume the options are pretty low.
Just doing a quick search of team that fit the criteria I see

49ers
Cowboys
Eagles
Seahawks
Lions
Bears

Now, Dallas isn't making a move because they are having their own issues with Dak, Zeke, and Cooper. So, I think that the 49ers, Eagles, and Seahawks are the best fits. The Lions and Bears could be but they'd have almost no cap space left and they'd have to rework other contracts or cut players to give them more wiggle room.

Would the 49ers really do it? They just spent valuable resources building up their front 7.

The Eagles are always in play.

The Seahawks seem like they would make a move like this as well. They have traded for offensive guys before like Flynn, Harvin, and Graham. Not sure about the defensive side off the top of my head but they could make a splash.

Morrison is in the Giants Ring of Honor not just due to longevity and loyalty but also do to his versatility, a factor so important in the 40 man roster or less days...

Allie Sherman thought Morrison would not be able to take the pounding that a full-time HB/FB gets but Morrison may have been too valuable to risk injury...in the 1961 Championship game he started at SS due to injuries to others.

In 1964 with the drafting of Joe Don Looney the Giants wanted to make Morrison a full-time FL knowing that Frank Giffords career would be ending. Its a tribute to Morrisons intelligence and skill-set that the Giants thought he would be up to filling Franks shoes.

However the Giants could never keep Morrison totally out of the backfield. With injuries decimating the Giants backfield as late as 1971 it was Morrison along with Rocky Thompson that got the key carries in a fourth quarter win at Atlanta. Norm Van Brocklin said the Giants had the deepest backfield in the league.

As to secondary depth:

The secondary was essentially a four-man operation for many years...

In the early 1960s, when the Giants were short handed the Giants had to play Morrison and Del Shofner in a exhibition game as depth.

CFL running back/kick returner Allan Webb became the Giants secondary depth. Before that it was kick returners Bill Stits and Lee Riley.

In 1963 the Giants had to use QB Glynn Griffing as secondary depth which hindered his development. That situation was alleviated when the Giants in-season acquired Eddie Dove from SF. But Doves retirement in 1964 led the Giants to search again for depth.

Versatile college QBs such as Gary Wood (1964) and Bobby Duhon (1968) were looked upon as DBs initially when drafted.

As the roster expanded to 40 the depth situation began to alleviate itself...in 1966 veterans Dick Lynch (when healthy) and Jimmy Patton among with rookie Phil Harris were secondary depth.

In 1967 the Giants acquired Dave Hathcovk from Green Bay, when he was injured the Giants re-signed Willie Williams who had played out his option to sign with the Raiders and was cut.

By 1968-1969 the Giants had a surplus they though they could trade from as young DBs Jimmy Holifiejd, Kenny Parker, Al Brenner and Tom Longo were thought to be promising behind Lockhart, Maher, Eaton, and Williams.
Great stuff on Joe, Dawg. Thanks.

Quote:
The Cowboys' defensive line: Projected starter Robert Quinn will be suspended for the first two games of the season, which gives him time to recover from a broken hand. The Cowboys have displayed a lot of confidence that DeMarcus Lawrence will be back for Week 1, but the reality is, no one knows for sure when he'll be back from shoulder surgery. Another starting lineman, Tyrone Crawford, is also on the PUP list. This should be the time that the Cowboys' youth steps up, but 2017 first-rounder Taco Charlton hasn't earned the team's trust yet, and it appears 2019 second-round pick Trysten Hill is coming along slowly. With cornerback Byron Jones also on the PUP list coming off hip surgery, the Cowboys' defense is unlikely to be at full strength early in September.

Count me as happy if we get to face the Cowboys D in the opener at less than full strength. I'd prefer a win over any other scenario, and if Dallas fans want to take solace in their roster being weak that's okay with me.
