NFT: McNeil's hammy: Not the worst news

Fort Mill Mike : 8/14/2019 3:06 pm
According to this, could be back in 10 days. Let's hope, Mets fans, they've at least not lost ground by then.

10 days isn’t the worst news
ZGiants98 : 8/14/2019 3:19 pm : link
But we are just down too many players in our lineup at once right now. This is a crucial stretch and unless the 2-3 guys left are red hot we just aren’t going to be able to score. Our pitchers are going to have off nights from time to time and they need an offense to pick them up at those times.

This is brutal. Cespedes, Lowrie, Nimmo, Dominic, Cano, and now McNeil. Just too many guys out.

We need some good news regarding Nimmo/Lowrie rehab assignments ASAP and for McNeil to legitimately be back in 10 days or we are sunk.

In the meantime, don’t get swept. Win one of the next two at least. Going 3-3 against Braves/Nats isn’t bad considering.
Yea this isn't the worst
Chris684 : 8/14/2019 3:31 pm : link
but it's NOT good.

For now, I'm going to just hope for 1 of 3 against Atlanta and then sweep KC.

Thor, Jake and Wheeler bouncing back (hopefully) in KC. We need to take 3.
Can’t see us sweeping KC
ZGiants98 : 8/14/2019 3:34 pm : link
With Tejada, Lagares, Panik, etc. all in the lineup at the same time. Could get ugly. Hope not.

Give me 3 wins by next Sunday and I’ll be thrilled!
Tejada in the lineup today 2B over Guillorme
Eric on Li : 8/14/2019 3:39 pm : link
if they aren't going to play Panik (which is fair either way) I don't understand why they don't give Guillorme a shot. He is likely their best defensive option, and also the youngest option, and also hitting almost as well as Tejada at AAA, and also having his best power year, and also hit a game winning homer a few days ago. So yeah, I'd rather give that guy a chance.

Yep, exactly. Just hold the fort. So, I have a sinking feeling we don't see either Nimmo or Lowrie at all, but at least Tejada is getting the call up while he's hot in 3A. He just needs to good, not great for the next couple weeks and hope someone else goes off. It would be nice to see Lagares' 4-4 turn into the start of a hot streak for him. that would sure be good timing.

And what about Smith? Any news on when he might be back?
Good news is Gagnon
ZGiants98 : 8/14/2019 3:40 pm : link
Had a real nice stretch in the minors before being recalled and I liked his stuff last night. I’ve also liked Brach over his 2 appearances. Finally, Familia might finally be turning the corner. Stuff was always there but now he’s finally throwing strikes.

Diaz is a lost cause without his slider but the rest of the pen seems to be a lot better.

At least Lowrie and Nimmo are in St. Lucie doing baseball activities. They are much closer than Dom/Cano IMO. Once Dom and Cano get cleared (whenever that is) they get to go to St. Lucie and do what Nimmo and Lowrie are doing now. Point is, its going to be a while on them IMO. Our best hope, are the guys already running around and doing stuff.
Familia has been decent for a month - i'd give him a few closing opps
Eric on Li : 8/14/2019 3:44 pm : link
Lugo is obviously the most trustworthy at the moment but Familia has as much upside as any closer in baseball when he's on.

Every game matters so they need to put in the best guys at any given moment to get the job done, but instead of using Lugo as an every night closer I'd give Familia chances ahead of Diaz for the time being. Diaz can't be trusted in any close game right now with the way he's giving up long balls.
Nimmo should be back by the end of the month

Some good news on the injury front for the Mets: Brandon Nimmo (bulging cervical disc) is inching closer to a rehab assignment. He's expected to begin one within the next week to 10 days, which should afford him some significant game action before the minor league season ends.

But Familia was never good in crunch time even when he had good numbers. I don’t think they can rely on him when it counts. They’ll need someone to help out Lugo on those days when he can’t pitch. I still think it almost has to be a Diaz and hope he can find his slider. To me, his year last year was the closest to Mariano of anybody. Hard to believe he can lose it overnight. If he can’t find it, maybe a Brach can. I don’t have any confidence in Familia to make the big pitch

Lol they said the same thing a week ago.
Lugo needs more rest than most relievers. If he doesn't get it, he's

Tidbits from Brodie Van Wagenen:

—It’s a “very low grade” strain for McNeil’s left hamstring

—Lowrie has started facing live pitching and seems to be over the hump

—Nimmo could start a rehab assignment within a couple of days

—Hechavarria is on release waivers
Dom doesn't sound close

Brandon Nimmo (bulging cervical disc) is starting a rehab assignment in the next few days.

Dom Smith is not close to being re-evaluated on the stress reaction in his left foot. He’ll continue being limited to the scooter, for now.

Fair. Unless a bunch of those college seniors from the 2019 draft pan out, there isn't a lot of help coming from the system for a while. Their outfielder pipeline is kind of embarrassing.

That’s a lot better than 7-10 days for Nimmo. Jeesh.

In the 2015 postseason Familia saved 5 games with a .6 era in 14.2 innings (only 1 earned run allowed).

In the series against the LAD he was the difference, out pitching Jansen with a 6 out save on the road in game 5. He was also excellent against the Cubs - though that series wasn't as close. Against the Royals he blew the game with the Gordon HR (that was the only ER he allowed in that postseason) but also almost got out of several near impossible jams (including game 5 if Duda could have just made that 1 throw home).

Regular season 2015-2016 he was as good as any reliever in the game. 2017 he got hurt (likely from overuse in 15-16). Just last year he was tied for being the 9th best RP in all of baseball (3.1 era) - with 1 of the few besting him being his current teammate Edwin Diaz. There are no perfect relievers except Mariano Rivera. Chapman is viewed as the hand down best closer in the game and he almost cost the Cubs their WS.

Yes because unless you have the most, your injuries are irrelevant...great point

Not my point. Point is...it's part of the game. Other teams have it worst. Stop whining
Just you whining bud, that's my point
ChaChing : 8/16/2019 3:57 pm : link
A discussion about an NL team losing their top hitter while in a close WC race late season is whining

While a 1st place team in the AL is bucking the trend (good for them, want a cookie?). Yet a fan has to come around and point out a meaningless fact about the "number" of injuries which makes no sense, then call me a whiner? So who's whining exactly?

Insecure much, while in 1st place no less?
And coming in to talk about 'worse for us'
ChaChing : 8/16/2019 4:00 pm : link
guess what, that WAS your point...and it's whining, esp while playing well

Good contribution and blatantly hypocritical name call
