NFT: Comcast vs Frontier Internet Service

Rondon : 8/15/2019 12:01 pm
Thanks for help. As stated before trying to save monies and respect opinions of other members. As they have previously have been of great help. Got rid of Comcast Cable the other day. As price is too high. Kept the internet and phone for the time being. However for these two services, they are charging me ~ $125. $76 for internet(60mb) and $40 for Home Phone. These price seem astronomically. Called Frontier and they are charging $10 for a home phone line and approx ~ $35 for the internet. However speed is 10mb. If I switch to Frontier, I could save over $80/month. I basically use the Internet for checking website etc and using Netflix. Not sure the impact etc. Any previous experience or recommendations would be appreciated.
$40/month for a landline?

That's worse than an $11 bud lite at Metlife Stadium. Totally obnoxious, maybe illegal. Tell them you want get rid of it.
10MB

Is fine if you're watching 2 devices max, maybe 3. HD video streams at about 2.2 but the real issue will be latency not bandwidth, because Frontier uses some pretty outdated hardware. I have comcast and we have two smart TVs, 4 laptops, 3 tablets and 2 phones and with 2 kids they are almost always on and we have zero issues. My gf's parents use Frontier and it's horribly slow when we're there but for just her parents and their one or two devices it does just fine.

only you will lose in the end; fuck cable companies. Funny how they keep changing their names like we don't know its the same utter bullshit overpriced services.

Internet needs to become a basic subsidized government service like electric and water. Good luck in this world's job market if you don't have access to the internet
We removed the landline from our Comcast plan and went with VOIP

Disclaimer: we don't use a landline much at all. It's merely there as a backup in case cell phones somehow aren't working, for the kids to use, emergencies, etc.

Bought an Ooma on Amazon for $79 (one-time purchase); a V-Tech cordless phone and base for $13 (one-time purchase); and the Ooma service is only $3.50 a month for unlimited calls, etc.

Went that route over 3 years ago and haven't regretted it once.

I have Frontier

And my sister has Comcast. Her internet is light years better than mine. Frontier is fine for surfing the web indoors, but I lose service on our patio.

As far as streaming goes, the wireless streaming is garbage, and constantly buffers. I purchased a port that uses electrical wiring as a data line, to hard wire two tv’s. That helped, but I’m still only getting about 8-10 mb to each unit. I have a hard time streaming DVD quality movies that are 1080p as most of them are roughly 25-30 mb.

I’d leave Frontier but my TV positives outweigh the internet issues. My TV package for the price is superb, and I’m right on the line where I can be considered NY or New Haven/Hartford. Comcast is New Haven/Hartford where Frontier is NY. On Comcast the NY channels are SD and that’s a dealbreaker for me.
I use a local internet provider (HTC)

$60/mo for 100MB. I stream on all TVs using Roku and ATT Now service. It was $75/mo to start but the a$$holes just changed the packages and raised the price to $95/mo. Still cheaper than my cable company.

I use MagicJack for my phone service (VoIP). It's $50 per Year and works just fine.
Do you really need a landline?

We dropped ours a few years ago, because the only calls we got on it were spam.

As Joey said, Fronteir's hardware is horribly outdated, so their broadband is not going to on par w/Comcast. Maybe see if FIOS is in your area? If nothing else, you can use it as a bargaining chip to get Comcast to drop its price.
