NFT: Mets talk 8/16

Chris684 : 8/16/2019 9:49 am
Feeling a little bit better after a frustrating start to the Braves series. Could have easily taken 2 from them but considering no McNeil the last 2 nights, I'll take it.

After the soft stretch and without one of our best players for a couple, 3-3 vs. Nats and Braves isn't terrible.

Not that these next 6 aren't important but with all of them vs. AL central, I'm hoping McNeil can get back in the lineup by next Friday night when we really start the race to the finish.

After that, no more inter-league, and 12 in a row with Philly, Cubs and Nats which is really going to go a long way in deciding our postseason fate.

Have to beat up on the Royals

with our 3 best pitchers going this weekend and the brutal schedule afterward.
What Rosario is doing is really exciting
Chris684 : 8/16/2019 9:56 am : link
THIS is exactly who he was supposed to be.

Whether we ultimately get in the playoffs or not, we have a legitimate core of talent. There's no denying that.
The earliest McNeil can come off the IL

is Saturday the 24th

I think we really need to sweep KC this weekend. We have a tough stretch coming up, but hopefully we can get a few guys back from injury soon.
The thing to take from this run is Alonso, Rosario, Conforto, Mcneil
Eric on Li : 8/16/2019 10:09 am : link
and JDD - these young players are really fun to root for and we are seeing them break out in a very big way. Regardless of W's/L's that's something we can take from this season and build on - especially Rosario considering a few weeks ago they were having him shag balls in CF. This team could really be something if the right decisions are made going forward (i.e. not displacing the young guys new positions for 36 year olds).

I hope we can also see this team continue to give the wild card a run because it's beyond criminal that we may have another season pass by where JDG/Thor are healthy and not able to compete in playoff baseball. I'm less than confident Mickey Callaway is capable of leading a troop of boy scouts, no less any mlb team to the playoffs.
I think Brodie is aware
Metnut : 8/16/2019 10:11 am : link
that Mickey isn't doing the best job. IMO, we'll either win a wild card or he will be fired. The trickier situation is if they finish something like 85-77 and miss the wild card by a few games. I think Brodie would still pull the trigger and bring in a new manager in that scenario.
Just keep winning series
gmen9892 : 8/16/2019 10:15 am : link
I would love to sweep KC with the Top 3 going, but I would be perfectly okay with 2 out of 3.

They just need to keep their head above water after that until they start getting reinforcements back (McNeil, Nimmo, and maybe Lowrie).

With CLE, ATL, and CHI coming up, they need to just go 5-4 in that stretch so they do not fall too far behind. Go into the Labor Day Weekend series with the Phillies with a chance to solidify their status as a contender with a fairly healthy team hopefully (fingers crossed).
Is there any reason

Why after being complimented for moving conforto in front of alonso, mickey has decided to change that?

I do wonder how much input Mickey has in the lineup and who is actually setting them.
Because Conforto has looked awful against lefties lately.
Meats and Cheeses : 8/16/2019 10:19 am : link
Heís really struggled since he got the game winning hit against the Nats. They also had to try and lengthen the lineup a bit since McNeil got hurt.

Iíve wondered the same. My only explanation for Conforto being all over the lineup is that heís playing around with lefty/righty splits in the lineup and pushes Conforto down when they are facing a lefty pitcher. Itís maddening. Just leave him alone. He can hold his own against lefty pitchers.
As much as I want to like Callaway...
Chris684 : 8/16/2019 10:20 am : link
There is just no defense of how he handles the bullpen.

And it sucks because you have Joe Girardi just sitting out there waiting to get the call and ironically, a big strength of Girardi's is managing the bullpen in game.

I think anything less than Mickey having a Magical fun and pulling all the right strings and being the sole reason they win the World Series. I think anything short of that and he is no longer manager moving forward.

Familia is coming back, Wilson is dependable

Then there is Lugo...so if Diaz can just be that guy again.

Let's not get our hopes up about Diaz.
I don't know about Conforto
X : 8/16/2019 11:56 am : link
He can easily have a 4 K game or multihit. Very streaky and average fielder. Just not a big fan of him.
Conforto has been noticeably more dangerous ahead of Alonso
Eric on Li : 8/16/2019 11:58 am : link
That homer Alonso hit in the first inning yesterday was very Piazza-ish. Rosario - Conforto - Alonso should be the everyday 2-3-4.
Strange

expectations from fans with Conforto. He was never projected to be some superstar. He's going to post his 3rd straight 3+ fWAR season aka above average regular yet again
I don't see how anything outside of a big push deep in the playoffs

This team is winning in spite of him.
His decision making is horrible.
He has cost this team so many wins this season

I agree with this.

Conforto is a very good but not great player. He's an every day RFer for any competitive team. A bit streaky, but so are a lot of players. Very good defensively as well. I only wish he's been left alone in RF more than he has been due to the imbalanced composition of this roster over the years.
Conforto is a borderline
Metnut : 8/16/2019 1:37 pm : link
all-star. A guy who can be a starting regular player for a contending team, but probably not one of the best couple players on that team.

IMO, he's a guy we should reach out to and extend him. He still has a lot of team control left so you could probably buy out 2-4 of his UFA years (in which he'd still be in his prime) at a reasonable rate.

The Mets really need to be more proactive about these types of things.
Conforto is a borderline all star and he'd be better if they didn't
Eric on Li : 8/16/2019 1:40 pm : link
play him out of position and was surrounded with better talent. This year obviously the Mcneil + Rosario + JDD + Alonso's development has helped with the latter, though they still moved him out of the 3 hole for some reason.

His career OPS (.832) is basically exactly the same as Paul O'Neill (.833) and I don't think that's an unreasonable comp.
Beyond this season, has JD found a home in LF?
Chris684 : 8/16/2019 2:03 pm : link
Or does he move to 3B after Frazier is out of here?

I'm thinking that now with the presence of Cano, you're gonna have to play McNeil at 3B next year.

I dunno.

Yes - keep JDD in LF and hope he can continue to improve a little bit. McNeil is the most likely 3B going forward since they won't move Cano but he should probably be at 2B. They actually acknowledged that they think playing 2B keeps him fresher than the OF, so this trip to the IL is a good example of why it's not always the best thing to take advantage of versatility even when it's there.

Very well said. It is great to see how the bats are catching up to the SP. of course the pen is troublesome but it seems like that for many teams, especially in our division.
Too bad we're saddled with Cano.
No Where Man : 8/16/2019 3:05 pm : link
The infield next year should be what you said.... JDD, Rosario, McNeil, Polar Bear. Cano and Cespedes, (if he ever plays again), should be coming off the bench, with Dom.
If only we didn't make the Cano move...
Chris684 : 8/16/2019 3:09 pm : link
McNeil 2B
Rosario SS
Conforto RF
Alonso 1B
JD 3B
Kelenic LF
Nimmo CF

Obviously we would need a FA catcher, but that is still a ton of homegrown youth.

Dom and Lagares on the bench.

Kelenic is still years away. By the time he's in the majors, Cano might not even be a Met anymore. I also believe, McNeil's best position is 3B, and its not really close. Davis obviously is going to be liability at 3B or LF.
I also wouldn't trade Dominc Smith away in the offseason
ZGiants98 : 8/16/2019 3:24 pm : link
unless we were blown away. With the way injuries hit this team, keeping him around is probably not the worst idea.

Im all for going into 2020 with an OF of Davis-Nimmo-Conforto-Dom-Cespedes (McNeil to 3B permanently).
I dont think Conforto is done maturing yet
ZGiants98 : 8/16/2019 3:28 pm : link
There's a massive difference between a wRC+ 130-140 guy (Cespedes at his height) and a wRC+ 120 guy (Jay Bruce). Conforto has been sort of teetering between the two. I think everyone's hoping he evens out more and shows us what he did in 2015-2016 going forward permanently. We'll see.

Yeah we drafted him out of high school last year. He's in high A ball but will likely repeat because he didn't exactly "kill it" there this year. Id guess 2022 if everything goes perfectly which of course means Conforto and others could be moving on by then also.

Nimmo debuted 4 years ago, Conforto 5. Not much of an excuse to have ZERO OF's.

I guess so. 5 games ago it looks like. Must have missed it. Sorry but promoting a wRC+ 130 bat in A ball seems over zealous and Im guessing this has nothing to do with where he will start next year and everything to do with him just getting a lame little cup of coffee with AA for a couple weeks before the season ends (Its laughable how bad he's been there this week).

Still think he starts back in A ball next year or if they do start him in AA he's still looking at 2022 when he's in the majors.
