NFT: New Orleans music venues/bars?

DanMetroMan : 8/16/2019 10:28 am
Headed down to New Orleans with my GF. Going for the 3rd time but the 2 previous times were "guys trips". Neither one of us are hugely into Jazz but wouldn't mind a fun blues spot, maybe less of an upscale vibe and more "fun" if possible. We are staying walking distance from Congo Square (Maison Dupuy hotel) if that helps at all. Any bars or restaurants you 100% recommend? My GF isn't hugely into the bougie vibe (she's all about frozen drinks etc) but I'll take any recommendations of any kind. Things to do outside of drinking/eating. Is the riverboat worth doing or a waste? I know I asked similar questions a few weeks back I just know when it comes to New Orleans there are SO many options that maybe you pick the wrong one and miss out on a gem.

There are a bunch of great music spots on Frenchmen street and you can just bounce between them. Literally just follow the sounds that you like.

Any place on Frenchman for music.

Also, if you’re there on a Tuesday night go to the Maple Leaf Bar to see the Rebirth Brass Band. The Howlin’ Wolf is also another good place.

I don't have any specific suggestions - but I went 10 years ago and had a blast. The food there is incredible. I'd love to go back.

Just a really great city with such a unique vibe.

Enjoy it, Dan.

Definitely Frenchman Street. Also I know it's touristy but my wife and I absolutely loved the dueling pianos at Pat O'Brien's. Wait for a table and order hurricanes and just hang out for an hour or two. It's awesome.
Vaughn's

If you are down here on a Thursday go to Vaughn's in the Bywater. Music doesn't start until after 10:00 and goes until 1:30-2:00 be prepared for a late night. Well worth it.

If you want specific recommendations let me know when you will be down here and I'll be happy to help you out.

if you haven't already, watch Treme before going down. Really introduces you to the music of NOLA very well and a lot of the musicians who are in it, still play regular shows at local bars down there. RIP Dr John

This is what I did a couple months ago. You can see anything from Jazz to Funk to Blue/Classic Rock - even some funk/hip-hop at night - just dip your head in any time of day. I especially enjoyed it in the afternoon, caught a great three piece cover band.

True, Preservation Hall is a must, but that will take up 1 hour of your stay in NOLA. Don't buy the reserved tickets, just go stand on the street before the performance and get in for $15.

As others have suggested....spend time on Frenchmen Street. Kermit Ruffins frequently plays at the Blue Nile.

Sunday Brunch at Little Gem Saloon on Rampart is a nice way to spend a Sunday Morning/Afternoon. Very casual, good music.

If you want a break from the music bars take the Charles Street cable car towards uptown and stroll the garden district....you may catch Archie Manning in his yard if your lucky. Then grab some Nachos at The Rum House on Magazine Street.

We took a walking tour of the garden district 20+ years ago. The tour goes right past the manning house. The tour guide said "If you were with me yesterday, you could have seen Archie having a catch with his son named Eli." Missed it by one day!

I enjoy morning jogs around the Garden District when I'm in NOLA, I always run by the Manning house house but I haven't had any lucky run ins either. They are probably wondering who the creepy guy that keeps running by the house is.

To the OP....if you and your girlfriend enjoy exercise, The Charles Street cable track also serves a nice stretch to jog/walk. It take you right past Audubon Park which which is a beautiful park and makes for an excellent jog/walk.
