Not expected to play tonight #CHIvsNYG:
RB Barkley (coaches decision)
RB Gallman (ankle)
CB Beal (hamstring)
CB Baker (knee)
LB Ogletree (calf)
OT Mihalik (burner)
OT Asafo-Adjei (concussion)
WR Slayton (hamstring)
WR S. Shepard (thumb)
TE Engram (coaches decision)
LS Zak DeOssie (toe)
Yep
Keeping it close to the vest based on meeting later in the regular seaso? or am I overstating strategy and it's just all about health? Curious move for the second exhibition game.
I'm interested in the WRs and LBs.
Hehe.
Hehe.
If our starters are trash that isnt a good thing
Zeitler.
Well yeh the blocking isn't just there, they are dominating.
Id like to keep the OL in
I don't, but I'm nonetheless happy to see some good blocking.
No basically whatever they did it wouldnt matter to you?
Its not their fault Mack isnt playing
Lol what? What resistance?
Quote:
remarkable what this offense can do both running and passing when the blocking is there

True true...but what I love too is seeing our guys get their assignments right. No plays blown up bc somebody whiffed on his read or something like that.
And thus far through a game and a drive, the OL is better than average
But Engram needs reps. He's talented, but he hasn't played anywhere near well enough to this point where he doesn't need the preseason reps.
Yeah, let's find some negatives as soon as possible.
Lmao
Id like to keep the OL in
Eli should play another drive or 2 IMO. Live action against another team is good practice for him. Hes going to be the starter week 1.
They had a great drive against an inferior defense. Exactly what you'd hope out of your first string. Also exactly what they wouldn't have done the past few years. They've met reasonable expectations. And yes, we've reached the point that merely meeting reasonable expectations is exciting. But nonetheless...
That's true. I kept waiting to see holding called
Yeah I'm guessing Jones gets it until halftime?
There is no way our line looks this good in regular season. The last time I saw domination like that at the NFL level was the 16 Boys. These guys are improved on the crap we have been trotting out there, but there really isn't much to be dissected when we dominated so hard up front. I will say our WRs that need to step up looked good.
Really good start
..that is a weaksauce penalty.
Incidental contact should be a no call.
Hill is a player. That would have gone a long way if not for his hustle
But I think a few reps are good. Surprised the bears arent playing any of their main guys
And that was an obvious penalty on Carter. He didn't club him in the head but it was plenty enough to draw a flag. That will be called every time. The rules are the rules, players have to adjust. Just can't go anywhere near the head of the QB, even if you dont hit him hard it''s going to be called.
That's something to work with
Agreed.
That really didn't figure into this drive. The Bears were getting the passes out really quickly.
Agreed! He hustled his ass off to across the field to help stop that play. I was extremely impressed!!!
Yep. Two plays in a row his closing speed prevented a first down or big play
Has to make tackles.
Agreed. Eli is done for the night.
Connelly is there, but he cant take on an entire OL himself
Ends are getting a push. Inside is not which makes it easy for the QB to step up.
Quote:
Im not crazy about Tomlinson in the middle. LBers also need to do a better job.
Connelly is there, but he cant take on an entire OL himself
And the point about the DLine playing more stout in the middle too.
Yes sir, knows hes playing for a job and running hard.
I'm really interested to see Hillman tonight! Surprised he's back tonight since his head hit the turf hard in the last game.
Where are the teams with all of this great OL depth?
Quote:
Looking good tonight!!!

Smith is on 4 special teams too. He is a lock to make the team.
The forces of darkness determined to prevent anyone from enjoying even a single play.
You're fucking miserable.
Aaaaannnd he fumbles making me look like an ass....
Carter is going to call him a bust now
You must be a blast at parties.
This kid can play
He really is an Eli clone
Quote:

He's looking promising otherwise.
I agree. But at least they have a pretty good group of starters. That's been a long time coming.
Said negatively....
This team doesn't have a Kevin Booth on it. Or anything close to it. If one guy gets hurt, the replacement is likely not an NFL caliber player.
First order of business was to get better starters. They've done that. But they're still no where near in good shape as far as the offensive line goes. Hoping everyone stays healthy because watching the shit show that has been the offensive line the last few years was painful. Will be nice to have a capable line for a change, but they're all going to have to stay healthy.
Totally agree. I think the OL is going to be good this year. We will def spend a high pick on an OT but still a good group. Our depth needs some work for sure

You must not watch a lot of NFL. Not a ton of offensive line talent. There isn't a team in the league that could weather a couple injuries to there top 3 lineman.
Quote:
decent but one injury and the entire thing could blow up in their face. No depth whatsoever. Better than where they have been in recent years obviously, but like many areas on the team, depth doesn't exist.
I agree. But at least they have a pretty good group of starters. That's been a long time coming.
Big difference from when other teams backups would be an improvement on our line. Oline depth is relatively non existent league wide

Goodluck on health..this isthe NFL.
1st sting OL played enough. Good work and no injuries.
Seems petty obvious, but it's just another thing to be said that can throw cold b water on progress
Neither because both would require you to slow down at least

The first men off the bench for this OL will be Pulley and Wheeler.
If you looked at backups across the league, I highly doubt youd find many more players who would really excite you as backups.
If the corner looks, its an INT...

Looked like it to me too.
Dont care if it was against the 2nd team.
I'm not sure either one would make many other rosters in the league. It takes time to build depth but that unit depth wise is still a long ways away from where it needs to be.
Wheeler and Pulley in an ideal world are guys that are in a battle to make the team. Instead they're 1 play away from starting.
It's not Gettleman's fault that the unit has no depth. I dont like DG but the OL was in total shambles when he got here. He's got a respectable starting unit now which is a start. But the depth scares the hell out of me especially when you have guys like Remmers who are a huge injury risk.
And if they call PI - it is really a shitty review system.

they are using the preseason to get a better feel on how the PI challenge system will work.
"during" you mean always, the place is a cesspool.
Correctly, not quickly.
Bad by Slade, and worse by Jones.

There was some type of stipulation where if they cut and then re-signed him they saved cap room and Simonson agreed.

I saw it, too.
If they wanted to do something, they needed to just give each team 1 PI challenge per game. Coaches wouldn't use it early and they would only use it on a game changing play.
If you use yours too early, then thats on you. Save it for the rare instance where it costs you a game.
None of this it comes from the booth in last 2 minutes of half. 1 a game for each side. The game for decades has been totally fine without having replays for PI, then they overreact to one fuck up. Instead of getting better officials, they put this dumb shit in
I really don't think you're kidding.
Its all part of the plan to make the transition seamless
Hamilton
He was then resigned. It was an administrative move to change the cap impact.

At best, you make it a rule for playoffs only.

He really does. He looks like he knows what hes doing out there and is not fazed by the level of play either.

He had a near-fumble earlier too.
Yes.
I thought that something looked weird
Yeah, that was a hell of a play by the defender, combined with what looked like 3 absolute whiffs by 3 different offensive linemen.
Yup. Hes got to learn to feel the rush and tuck it when one of his OL whiffs, but hes decisive and accurate throwing the ball. Fun to watch.
Nope. He's competing with Smith, not Gallman. Gallman is a lock
Nice to see Perkins bounce Back !
Hes got a nice confidence building and he shook off the two fumbles. Gotta like what you see from him. I dont care who hes playing against.
like that!
Good point.
Please don't! No need to risk it. He's the goods.
These are the points that hurt the most for me. Unnecessary

One thing that Daniel Jones is proving he can do at a high level:
Putting different air and touch on each pass based on defensive set up, route, and play design
IMO, any pass that is complete is a good pass.
He's a 16 year veteran playing backups. He should look good.
In reality Eli probably shouldn't be the starter Week 1. He should definitely be out before the end of the year.
Carter, Haskins
Carter, Haskins
Carter, Haskins
Carter, Haskins
Carter, Haskins
Give it a rest already!
If Jones is for real nothing else matters.
Very good pass.
Assuming you mean the ball to Latimer, I thought it was near-perfect. DB has tight coverage, Jones put it up when Latimer could make a play.
Accuracy, brains, toughness before arm strength

Eli hasn't been significantly better in OTAs, mini camp, training camp or preseason games. Neither give them a chance to win a Super Bowl so yes they should play the younger guy who they just took with the 6th overall pick.

Elis having a better camp, and he should. Hes the vet and knows the offense. But Jones seems ahead of the rookie curve. And game performance matters more than practice. Eli did his thing, but Jones is not afraid of the moment.

Not all of the defensive players will be cut that are currently playing. Also, it doesn't matter. Reading coverages, handling protections, etc. There is still alot of benefit from playing now. He should have gotten all 3rd qtr and let Tanney n laualetta split 4th.

I actually think the second should barely count against him. That was just a crazy play.

Perkins seemed to redeem himself a bit in the 3rd quarter.
I just said to my family, "I wish we had their punter."

Wtf? Would you be happier if Jones has looked like shit? This is ridiculous. We should ALL be happy with what weve seen from Jones. It doesnt make him better than Eli but whats wrong with being excited about what we are seeing?
Do you honestly think that getting Jones in sooner rather than later is not better for the long term? Instead of being excited about Jones, youre more worried about the reactions youll see regarding Eli if he doesnt play well. And thats pathetic.
I'm still not sure what the point of having Eli on the team is. Getting paid a shit ton of money, is finished being a good football player and could create a real messy situation if not handled properly by Mara/Gettleman/Shurmur.
Judging by how Eli has been handled for a couple years now, it's probably going to be a shit show. There is a ton of risk, and very little reward. Everyone, Eli included, would have been far better off if he was cut in the off-season.
It's sad the way Eli's giants career is going to end. Terrific career that is going to have a black eye on it at the end because of the owner. McAdoo was a total clown, but he was right about Eli at this stage. McAdoo handled everything terribly, but he also gave the Giants a get out of jail free card where Mara and co. didn't have to be the bad guy and they could have parted ways that off-season, and they chose not to do that.
The 2019 season to me is mostly about Daniel Jones. I dont need to see Eli play a bunch of games and struggle to even be .500. Get Jones meaningful time and set your sights on bigger things for 2020. Hopefully don't let Barkley take a beating and hope that guys like Lorenzo Carter show great promise.
Way too great of a chance at a complete mess to even consider bringing Eli back this year.
The managements comments comparing the situation to Green Bay with Rodgers/Favre and KC with Smith/Mahomes scares the hell out of me. Eli has done absolutely nothing recently to make anyone believe the GIants can win 10+ games this year. The Packers/Chiefs were both playoff teams in those 2 QB's final seasons, Favre all the way to NFC title game. The Giants the last 2 seasons have been dreadful.
I'm just not sure what they are holding onto with Eli. The Giants couldn't handle the Eli situation worse if they were intentionally trying to have it blow up in their face.
This is Barkleys and Jones team now and hopefully for a long time. The sooner it's turned over to Jones, the better.
Because they should have released Eli before they drafted Jones or should they have not drafted Jones because they had Eli? Inquiring minds want to know.
Yes, a rookie QB has never been better than a veteran from day one in the history of the NFL. I forgot about that.
Your untrained eye tells you that Jones is better right now. You have no idea what it takes to be a good QB.
Do you know whether Jones has absorbed the whole play book?
Do you know whether he is making all of the right adjustments at the line yet?
Do you know whether he is making the right reads?
Does anyone know whether he can deal with a real pass rush when the season starts?
Can you tell us how well he has played against a starting defense?
I have been a critic of Eli over the years. Dep will tell you that. However, you have to look at this objectively. There is no way that Jones is a better QB yet. If you still think that is the case, then someone needs to take your car keys away because your judgement is a huge issue right now.
Bringing the absolute LULZ as usual.

I think you misunderstood my post. Ive been as pumped as anyone with Jones. I am just shaking my head at guys saying he should automatically start week 1.
There are posters here basically saying if we made the playoffs with Eli, that it was a wasted season since Jones didnt start.

Bottomline..drafted jones rid eli..or eli's team this season and drafted much more area of need say defense and made it work to draft a better group of qbs next draft. Bottomline, like it or not, they messed this up..the transition. Period
Oh well, I can choose to endure it or not.

That would suck, and I think its quite possible. Many would probably like a playoff team and the reins handed to Jones next year, ala Smith to Mahomes. But in that situation it could be dicey, DG and Shurmur probably would want to go to Jones, Mara would want Eli back for another year and Manning would want multiple years.

Again, people need to see whats actually said.
1. If the giants have this unexpected season and win the division and make noise in the playoffs with Eli, isnt that a good thing? Dont you think thats what Mara was implying?
2. And lets take it a step further. In the unlikely scenario we winnthe SB this year and Eli has a great year - youre just tossing him away?
And what could the Mannings possibly do to Mara in retaliation of starting Jones? Mara is a million times more powerful than eli or Archie when it comes to the NFL?

If the team is bad or just not in contention, I'd play Jones in the middle/towards the end of the season.
And he can easily do that playing 6-8 games, right?

no it shouldnt be mathematically eliminated
My leash would be shorter. Say the Giants fall to say 3-6 and lost two in a row in poor fashion, and Jones is showing well in practice. Right there would be the time to make the switch. Possibility he sparks the team and saves the season.

youre not hurting Jones by sitting him and you play each year to maximized your record. Not sure whats wrong with that. Its what normal professionals do.
Oh I absolutely agree. My point to dep is, hes etting it up to be absolutely unbearable when the time comes to get Jones on the field. We all know hes gonna go through the typical rookie struggles. But dep will remind us all on every incomplpass or turnover that many thought Jones was better than Eli. He is not going to be an objective viewer in this. Hes too invested.
Any sane person on the planet wont expect Jones to perform like a 15 year vet right out of the shoots. But dep will focus on the 1% that actually thinks Jones is better right now. You watch. Its going to happen.
The unbearable part is going to be posters clamoring everyday once the season starts for him to start when in reality Eli will be given at least 6 starts to show what he can do.
Which is why Eli should have a short leash.
Jones will start 2020. Possibly sooner. Probably not until the season is lost.
At this point they are saying all the right things to smooth the transition, but it's very telling that they didn't extend Eli. There is no way they are going to extend him next offseason and continue to sit a #6 pick. It's downright foolish to expect otherwise.
It should be obvious that the PR plan at this point is to placate a fan base that acted like morons the last time Eli was benched.

It was. A rocket. Like to see more of him in passing situations.End of game emphasis seems to be on runners and run blocking, though.

I don't know that he necessarily freaked out. That is a perception.
Even if he did, can't one change their mind or ways?

Yeah Im fine with that if you are saying that when Jones does get his chance and struggles you arent constantly bringing up those that thought hed be better than Eli. Im with you on the fact Jones likely isnt ready and Eli should get the starts as long as they are competitive and in contention. Im just thinking you wont give Jones a fair shake if he struggles when he does take over. I can see an endless stream of I told you so going on.
Dont let the nitwits turn you against Jones, even if subconsciously. We should all hope he comes in and kicks ass.
Agree
I can't tell if that was the same play, I think it was, but Hernandez ended up blocking two dudes at the same time
If his back holds up we may have a very fine line this year. That pancake was sick!

In fact - I texted Mook earlier tonight saying we are going to be just fine with Jones whenever he gets his chance.

Perhaps they believe winning makes a difference in the attitude of your team.
If manning gives them the better chance to turn his team into a winning team then it's an easy decision.
A team can have a successful season without a championship. Some believe winning consistently is good for the mindset of your team

Eli has one year left on his contract. I think they're giving this to him and letting him play this final year (or at least until the middle/latter part of the season). Did you see how they reacted when Eli got benched?

Yes I was paying attention. Even with that data I was never lead to believe they would simply waste a season
It's not a gift. He's under contract anyway.
Huh?
Came away with the same feeling. And it feels pretty good.

I still struggle to understand how management saw the 5-11 team from last year, the number of rookies and 2nd year players in key roles this year, and the number of new players in the system, and thinks this is a team that can compete for a championship.
Because why would you pay and play Manning in front of Jones unless they really think this team has a legitimate shot at championship?
I know its only preseason but even so, I believe this team will be better than you think.
Do you believe this team is good enough to seriously compete for a championship?
Probably not.... but if Eli is better than Jones (which I believe he is right now), you play Eli until youre proven not.
Dallas has problems with elliott and a bunch of injuries. Guys fussing over contracts. Wentz hasnt proven to stay healthy. And Washington is in a free fall with their QBs.
Heres what I believe. We are on the right path. And we are narrowing the gap. So with some luck, couple bounces - who knows?
The energy and attitude of this team just feels different than what we have rolled out the last 5-6 years.
Losing now for the sake of experience, and an investment in the future of the team is a sacrifice I'd gladly accept as a fan.

What if 9 games gets you in the playoffs?
That's worked over and over again in the NFL. If anything, starting immediately out of the gate has led to many flameouts, although the percentage of that happening has lessened in recent years.
I'll try and find the exact n umber, but since 1990, the number of first round QB's who started for more than 3 years after sitting at least a year was like 1.5 times higher than the number of QB's who started for three years or more who started immediately

As cynical as it might seem, I'd much rather Jones get through the growing pains, than the Giants win 9 games this year.

If the Giants get in the tournament it was worth it.

Theres a very flawed assumption that if he sits and learns in practice and starts next year ear, that he would still have growing pains and we would have a less than optimal season. Theres really no data to support this; anything is conjecture. Whats real is for people who get paid to do their job to the fullest.

Well, good to know you would forfeit a season because you don't think the giants can compete. Good thing the giants don't follow that line of thinking or 2007 and 2011 would have never happened.
The giants can compete this year and still remain competitive whenever they decide to transition to Daniel Jones. I don't understand how anyone thinks that they can't. Did the chiefs struggle with mahomes? How about Aaron Rodgers when they moved on from Favre? Rivers sat behind breese for 2 seasons and posted a 14-2 record his 1st year as a starter

Perhaps they believe winning makes a difference in the attitude of your team.
If manning gives them the better chance to turn his team into a winning team then it's an easy decision.
A team can have a successful season without a championship. Some believe winning consistently is good for the mindset of your team
+1
You don't need to call it the Packers model or the Chiefs model. A first rounder starting immediately on a bad team could have lasting damage. I don't think the Giants are terrible, but you've seen it with a litany of Cleveland Browns QB's. David Carr. Joey Harrington.
The 2019 Giants are following consecutive last place finishes with a lame duck quarterback at the end of his career.
I've been highly consistent in my opinion on the quarterback position from the end of last year; cut Manning, sign a much cheaper stop gap, draft a first round player and ease him in. I call that the Tom Coughlin model.
I'm not advocating throwing Jones to the wolves. I'd much rather throw a much less valuable player like Taney at the wolves.
But the worst case is Manning playing 16 games and Jones walking into 2020 with no starts under his belt.

If the Giants are winning and the offense is working the Giants seem comfortable with an Alex Smith/Pat Mahomes approach.
I'm not making a complicated point -- I'm simply saying if you don't believe you can make a run at it -- it's better to have a plan to get the young guy an quickly as responsible.
I'm not saying throw him to the wolves and ruin him, I'm saying when he's ready to execute a gameplan get him starting.

But, that is the point. Just because you don't think they can make a run at it doesn't mean the giants feel that way. It is not absolutely necessary to get Daniel Jones starts. Plenty of quarterbacks have sat for most of the season and more and played well when their opportunity came. They can learn by watching too.
Why does it have to be a championship or bust? And it doesnt matter what we think.
If the Giants coaches and brass think they can go out and win a lot of football games with Eli then thats what they are going to do. And if we happpen to stink, which is quite possible, then they will make the switch.

Dep -- if every discussion comes down to "what does it matter what we think" -- Eric might as well close up shop.
I respect Gettleman and Shurmur enough to assume they believe the team can compete, I'm genuinely interested in what the fans think.
Most of the examples of teams who stashed QBs for a full year or more were pretty good teams already, so I don't get those comparisons. I'm looking to understand if there are other more intellectually interesting arguments.
It doesn't matter what you or I think. It's what the giants think. What the giants think now may change during the course of the season and they will adjust. Last year they thought they had stabilized the offensive line with omameh and flowers on the right side. It didn't work and they made changes. The season will play itself out and reveal where this team is.
With all that said, you asked if I think they can make a championship run. I think the giants could be in contention for the playoffs down the stretch (whether it be for the division or a wild card spot) and if they make the playoffs, anything can happen. We have seen teams get hot late and make a run.
We are not the saints or the rams, but we aren't the Miami dolphins either.
I think the Giants are further away than many fans. I think when the games matter we'll see a defense with a lot of youth and growing pains, and WR set that's very average and will effectively shorten the field.
I won't be surprised if the Giants are competitive and come up short to the tune of a 3-5 start, but with Manning playing efficient football behind a better line and a better running game.
And that's where I see things getting really tough. What happens if Manning is playing pretty good ball but the Giants aren't winning. How do you handle the season?

I have a feeling this offense is going to put up some points. The offensive line is key to that success, but I really like what we have there, As far as wide receivers, I see a lot of what shurmur had in Minnesota with Diggs and Thielen. Tate and shepard can create space within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage and get yards after catch. I view the wide receiver group as "the sum is greater than its parts". Engram is also going to be a factor and we will see contributions from players like Fowler, TJ Jones and latimer.
Barkley is another factor and I believe if the passing game is proficient enough, Barkley will find holes to run the ball.
The defense is the biggest unknown, but I really like the mix of veteran leadership with bethea, ogletree, markus golden and Jenkins with young talented fast players. They will have their struggles for sure, but depends how much.
The season really does reveal what teams really are and it will be no different this year. What if we struggle and are 3-5 after 8 games, but the rest of the division is struggling too and we are only 1 game back of the division. What if we see the defense coming on and really playing well.
So many variables that can play out and dictate the decision making. In 2004 we were 5-4 and still fighting for the division when Coughlin made the move to Eli.
And that's my point -- in all the myriad scenarios -- the only one where Eli Manning playing the majority of the games clearly gets the Giants closer to the ultimate goal is if they are unambiguously a contender.
And if the Giants aren't an unambiguous contender I don't see the utility in Manning taking away snaps from Jones.
I deeply hope by the midpoint this Giants regime has the fortitude the Coughlin regime did.

In 2007, our defense was blown out by 80 points in the first 2 games and looked like the season was going to go down the toilet. The defense showed nothing, but then they got it together and got significantly better as the season progressed and were eventually instrumental in the playoffs to a superbowl championship.
In 2011, we had a horrible running game. We struggled mightily to run the ball, with any consistency, but then late in the season we started running the ball better and it propelled us into the playoffs and again the running game was a key factor in the playoff run to a superbowl championship.
My point is that teams can improve as the season goes on and we don't know how much of an impact that improvement can mean. This defense could really struggle early on, but by week 8 or 9, they could be really making an impact in a positive way in games.
You seem to feel that Daniel Jones needs to start and the sooner the better. I do not share that sentiment. There are some quarterbacks that have had success starting from day one and others that have struggled as starters from day 1. There are quarterbacks that have had success after sitting for a year or more and others that have struggled. It is not a detriment to the team or Daniel Jones if he doesn't start this year.
Daniel Jones has already come in and showed some very positive production and talent. He will learn a lot from watching and studying.
