...the first string went up against Bears' non-starters and dominated. Our second string line also played well, putting aside one snafu in which our RT needlessly over-committed to the outside where our TE blocked the DE, who then boomeranged inside for a hot route strip of Daniel Jones.
but the Giants OL dominated them which is good. They are coming along nicely. Remmers is a big upgrade at RT.
I think the biggest upgrade is the interior. Almost 700 pounds of beef at Center and two guards. If the Giants faith in Pio proves correct, it will greatly eliminate interior pressure which will allow Eli to step up from outside pressure imo and have plays further develop.
They only dress 7 on game-day and it looks likes Gates is being prepped to serve as a utility reserve and is showing to be a gamer.
guy but other than the whiff on the "strip sack" (wheeler and Brown both?) I thought the OL shined.
Gates looked really good.
I don't think that was Wheeler at RT on the strip sack.
Plus, the RT wasn't totally at fault. The RG was out of place to pickup the rusher when he slide to the inside.
Nah I don't agree with that. It looked to me like he was completely at fault. He had outside help from the TE who chipped the rusher, and he had no business moving outside. He should've stayed to the inside all along, but by moving outside where he had help, he opened up the inside for the rusher to make a nice move and get to Jones.
I don't think the RG had any fault at all on the play, and if he was expected to that would've made three guys responsible for blocking one? Doesn't make sense to me.
...he had NO business vacating his area completely while the DE was engaged with the TE. He has got to be ready for the possibility that the DE may spin back to the inside, which is exactly what happened. I think what our OT should have done is extend his right arm out to feel for the DE but honor the inside.
He had outside help from the TE. He whiffed and over committed opening up the inside lane.
Good learning point for all involved.
DJ8 and has double pat of the ball, might have played a roll in him losing control of the ball. This has been touched upon in the past if it might be an issue for him. If given a clean pocket, it is not an issue.
It sounds to me like everyone is still down on Wheeler even though some were admiring his weight game and apparent newfounded strength from the offseason. Are we giving up on him now? Is Slade actually better than him? I find that hard to believe.
yeah, I was gonna say he looked ok in short stink. Looks like a big guy. Also very chummy with DJ on sideline. Otoh, Looks like Conrad's stock may be dropping. He's 5th on depth chart and seems to be dropping a few balls lately. I know the coaches had been real high on him, but now not so sure he sticks.
But that doesn't mean you give up on Wheeler. Maybe we can get a 7th for him. He has staring experience and he is cheap. It's a good problem to have and it shows how far we have come as an OL.
As for the OL overall they have not really been tested. They can only block the players on the field and they have done well but the 3rd game is when we should see some starters and get a better sense of how much we have improved.
and even looks like we have a few quality players for depth. Real test will be against another team's 1s, especially in the run game. But, OL is light years ahead of where they were just a year or two ago

No one is going to trade for a player who is a backup to the backup.
Gates looked really good.
Looking great is looking great. I'll take that.

Yes it was Slate. Seemed like we had a TE blocking too on that play. Or maybe he just was there to slow him up.
This may help....

great, but they were playing against the 2nd team defense.

Bingo. How many friggin’ times has the OL sucked in preseason against all “stringers?”

Wheeler is 3rd string and based on his play last night won’t be on the roster.

+1.
In previous years the line never looked good in the preseason, regardless of who they were playing.

I'm on record that he gets 3K total yards this season, and I'm sticking to it. Even 2.5k would be a new record.
The talent difference between [any other tackle] and Wheeler is hard to put in words. I really, really hope [any other tackle]'s health holds up.
