This^..I only saw the 4th quarter, but when was the last time a Giants 2nd, 3rd, or 4th team looked equal to the opponents backups? I cannot remember - 2011?
Eli Jones looked sharp
Bluesbreaker : 8/16/2019 10:55 pm : link
Some turnover issues but goes along with learning
They were able to generate a pass rush .
Best of all these guys are forming as a team with no
prima-donna BS .
Corey Latimer picked up where he left off .
Great hustle play by Russell .
Best performance by a young team with so many

Agreed - as evidenced by the offense not going to pieces when the backups went in. 2nd and 3rd unit OL looked pretty sharp too

It's hard to even blame him for the second fumble. That was a flukishly good play by the defender, who managed to dodge 3 confused-looking linemen and slap the ball away with pinpoint accuracy.

Maybe so, but a rusher speeding around the edge to the passing hand of the QB happens quite often. Ball security is still the qbís responsibility. IMO, the fault lies at Jonesí feet.
The fumble on the exchange
dep026 : 8/16/2019 11:06 pm : link
Was more concerning than the 2nd one. Most strip sacks can be placed on the OL, not the WB.
It's really encouraging

to see the way this team is playing as you move down the depth chart. The reclamation project is beginning to show some dividends.

These 2 preseason games have been night and day when compared to the recent era.

You win in this league with a strong middle roster. We haven't had that in years.

Spot on, how many years have we watched this team look like crap in the preseason and blamed it on vanillla schemes and then it continues in week 1 of the regular season. Very encouraged from what I have seen so far.
Got some tough cuts coming at wr...
Dan in the Springs : 8/16/2019 11:13 pm : link
How many can they keep? 7?

Shepard, Tate, Fowler, Latimer seem like locks.

Alonzo Russell with the effort plays but not many highlight receptions. TJ Jones looking like a keeper. You know they like Slayton, but he's not been on the field.

Russell Shepard could easily be in the outside looking in with several others making a case as well.

read too much into how the team looked tonight because Nagy doesn't give a crap about the preseason. That makes it hard to gauge how the starters would've done in a regular season game.

But a good takeaway is that the bottom half of the roster can play hard and can provide some key depth. We aren't seeing a Davis Webb come in and go 1-7 for 5 yards, or any of the previous backups who have looked terrible. We look like we have solid talent up and down the roster. At least better than we initially thought it would look like.

Someone pointed out that he kept his eyes downfield, which is a good thing. He also was aware a rusher coming, so that trip was on him. That would be okay where Iíd like to see him use his legs to extend

I know what you are saying, but in previous years we would struggle even against a start less Nagy team. Its encouraging to see the offense make plays. Wide receivers are catching the ball. Offensive linemen are creating holes for the running backs and the special teams is making plays.

I think it really is like shurmur said before the first pre season game. He wants to see it look like a real football game and it has. It hasn't looked like a football game in preseason for so long.

I have t seen the whole game yet, just first half. Are you saying Gates looked good playing tackle tonight? He had a bad game last week.....did he do better this week? Iím sure it was against Chicagoís third team though, so I will temper my enthusiasm a wee bit, but always glad to hear good news.

the giants went 6/0 in preseason, and we all expected so much. i think we won 2 games that regular season.

Winning is an important lesson for this giant team, players are getting experience as are units and the three teams, and their coaches.
the SEASON however, is what counts and is so different from this. Iím enjoying studying, once again reinterested in giants football. But we will see what transpires when the real firing starts. Itís always much different.

Yeah, and it seems like the last 6 years or so we've sucked in the preseason and continued to suck in the regular season. Sometimes bad play in preseason IS indicative of the regular season. No one thinks this is some proof we'll be juggernauts.
I also didn't see Carlock tonight...
Dan in the Springs : 8/17/2019 2:06 am : link
Gates had one really bad play where he was best which led to a sack. I will be watching again to see the run blocking closer, but the story that he had a bad game last week I disagree with. Yes, he had the penalties, but he played a lot of snaps and pretty much locked down any kind of pass rush from his side. Neither of his holds were desperation moves from being beaten, they were the type made from starting on his man a bit too long and both were in rushing attempts.

Also interesting was that Slade came in and played LT when Wheeler finally saw the field.

I think the coaches are going to be happy again overall with the tape of Gates. His sack allowed was not due to poor footwork but the defender showed very good use of hands in shedding the block. Gates' arm length is his biggest issue and it hurt him on that play. I don't think he's a starter at LT, but he is likely to be the first man of the bench. As either Papa or Banks said, he's a five-hole player, meaning they can put him anywhere on the line and he'll give you acceptable play.

Whether or not DG needs another offseason to get more OL and front
yatqb : 8/17/2019 2:20 am : link
seven players, we look to have the most important piece of the rebuild already...Jones looks like the real goods.

I agree with the comments about the team having greater depth, and must comment that DG accomplished that in a short period of time. Now we could use an impact player or two on defense, and perhaps one more stud on the OL and weíll be a force again.

I canít give Gettleman enough praise for the job heís done to date.
Solid effort
Lines of Scrimmage : 8/17/2019 6:51 am : link
Jones looked really poised and accurate. I don't think he was under center at Duke so he needs more reps conducting the exchange.

Interior pass blocking will be a huge benefit this year and big upgrade at RT.

It was Chicago back-ups but they are a team with one of the better defenses in the league so their depth is probably stronger than most.

The Giants are trotting a significantly better Oline opening day. The team is continuing to work towards winning in Dallas!
I'm not sure that Daniel Jones fumble from under Center...
M.S. : 8/17/2019 6:52 am : link

...was entirely his fault.

I don't know how this can happen, but the snap did not come straight back but rather looked like it was hiked to the far left grazing Jones' fingers. He still has to secure the ball, but it looked like a funky snap.
R.J. McIntosh looked very active out there...
M.S. : 8/17/2019 7:05 am : link

But for now, If he never makes the starting lineup, I wouldn't be surprised.

Heís a rookie who is moving from a small school. Heís probably a spot player behind Carter, Golden and Martin. Letís not write him off after two preseason games.
For a weak position, WR battle is interesting
Mike in NY : 8/17/2019 7:28 am : link
You already have Tate and Sterling Shepard, but beyond that it is murky. Latimer is a coaching favorite, QBís seem to have a rapport with Fowler, Russell Shepard has made plays on coverage teams, Alonzo Russell gives 110% whenever he is on the field, T.J. Jones has made plays this preseason, Brittan Golden actually looks like our best returner but really has not shown much at WR going against the same opponents that Jones and Alonzo Russell have, and then there is Darius Slayton. Even with Tateís suspension you still are in a numbers game.

Jeez... it's kind early to make such a conclusion. He may not contribute very much this season, but give this guy some time!
#59 Lorenzo Carter...
M.S. : 8/17/2019 7:59 am : link

...has a nice pass rush, but then got his ass completely handed to him on (I believe) a third down rush to the right. He was double teamed, and by the look of it, he may still be going fucking backwards at 7:59am Saturday morning. He really looked terrible on that play.

Yup, Tyke Tolbert is once again doing a great job getting the average guys ready to play hard and make the plays that are there to be made.

I agree that Tate, SS, Latimer and Fowler seem to be the top 4...and assuming Slayton gets his chance to get healthy, that likely leaves 1 remaining spot for Shepard, Russell, Jones, Golden, and the other guys to fight for.

Between Tateís suspension and the inevitable bumps and bruises...
Big Blue Blogger : 8/17/2019 8:32 am : link
... the WR competition might not require any really painful choices in September. And by the time Tate returns, somebody else may have gotten dinged or earned a ticket to the waiver wire. Behind Tate, Shepard and Latimer (and possibly Slayton), the Giants have a bunch of Work-hard types who would have a good chance of clearing waivers - either in September or when Tate returns - and returning on the practice squad. Most of them have been waived at least once in their careers.
I haven't heard of any significant injuries. I hope that's true

They have four years accrued, so no need to clear waivers. I doubt Fowler is in immediate jeopardy anyway, as long as he stays healthy. He might have to worry when Tate returns, if younger receivers show promise. My guess is that they go vet-heavy in September (Maybe keeping both Fowler and Jones), then start migrating the rookies from the practice squad after Tate comes back.

Tanney threw an interception near the goal line and the defensive player who intercepted it from the bears was gone. Looked like it was a sure TD going the other way. Out of nowhere Russell comes up and made the tackle around mid field. The bears subsequently scored, but Russell showed hustle and speed.

Any one know why he only get a few snaps this game?

He looked pretty decent getting some penetration near the goaline shooting the C gap. Also, got under the right tackle on a run play and nearly tripped up the ball carrier. Any insight would be appreciated. I was thinking he may have been dinged up but then I saw him out there for the last few plays of the game
