Nick Gates

I'm one of the many who likes the improvements in our starting o-line, but am concerned about the depth on that line. I recognize that there's a league wide shortage of lineman who can play, but I'd at least like to see some depth there. I had previously never heard of Nick Gates, but was impressed by what I saw last night. I was also impressed that Carl Banks seemed to like him. I was wondering what other people saw in his play - particularly people who are good at analyzing the play of specific offensive linemen.

He looked good

against the Bears 2nd and 3rd teamers. They also mentioned that he can play all 5 spots along the line
Gates is intriguing

He played at Nebraska, big school known for physical football. I believe he falls into the grouping of one of those Tackles to guard converts and with that the projection can be tough.

More generally, Gettlemans teams in Carolina were able to develop OL talent. Norwell was an UDFA and is now a bona fide starting guard.
So when Giants kept young OL around last year specifically Gates and Brown, I hoped they were developing them.

I'd have to watch the game in closer detail to have a more specific opinion on how they played, but I like the direction the OL is going in.

The biggest weakness I believe is in swing tackle. Wheeler has fallen behind. If a veteran shakes loose, especially with Big George banged up and missing important time, that is the spot I would focus on filling.
Sounds like he will make the team as

he can play all 5 positions on the line.
He was on the IR last year.
It would be awesome if the Giants could develop some serviceable OL Depth.
Sounds like he has a nasty streak in him as well.
He did play some left and right tackle in college, but people

felt that he'd have to move inside in the nfl. But if the Giants think he can play all 5 positions, maybe he can at least be an emergency tackle.
Interesting note on gates...

...Saban recruited him to Alabama but he chose Nebraska.
Iím surprised he is playing tackle

I thought everything I read on him said short arms needs to move inside and play guard. Hmmm

I still have Great hope that Big George will return and be the back up depth we need just in case Remmers gets injured. I expect he will return from concussion protocol this week.

Norwell was also a OT to G conversion.

is the next David Diehl. Never an all-star, but gives everything on every play. And, a swiss-army knife to boot.

this stuff on Big George above from two posters is ridiculous (no offense to the posters). I'm as big a fan of long shot UDFAs as anyone, esp. a story like this. But the posts saying 'esp. if Big George doesn't make it back' treat it as a given he was going to make the 53.

I noted last week that Gates is pretty quick and nimble for a big guy. That + his versatility as Banks noted last night. Vs Jets and Bears, first time he was slotted in at LT. He's raw as can be, and even vs 2nd and 3rd stringers it shows. But it seems like there's enough there to show hope for promise.

Brown, inside, harder to see what was going on, but he was cleanly beat on a couple of plays.

And on the Jones fumble in the pocket (not on the snap), Slade adjusted to the outside where the DT was supposed to be and was cleanly beat when the DE went inside...oooffff. Another mistake of inexperience.
DT meaning double team

not def tackle
Gates was a three year

starter for a P5 team, two at left tackle. He came out with a year of eligibility remaining which was probably not the best idea since he went undrafted. He didn't leave for academic reasons, he made the Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll both semesters his last year there. I think the NYGs were lucky to get him as an UDFA and stash him on the IR for a year. He looks solid as a backup, even at LT.
Just rewatching the game

Gates has stood out at LT, and his hustle on the fumble was outstanding. Looks good

This was my thought exactly.

Hope we are right 😉
I remember Tiki's comment during training camp they year that Diehl

was drafted. He said, 'Diehl's a steal'. And he was - after being drafted in the 5th round. I hope that Gates will prove to be a steal too.

The highest graded players on offense last night were Nick Gates (74) and Paul Perkins (72.5) with a minimum of 25 snaps.

Gates has allowed pressure on just 3 of his 56 pass blocking snaps this preseason.
I had big hopes for him last year
mavric : 8/17/2019 7:16 pm : link
He was one of our Giants highly touted UDFAs. But he ended up on IR before the season started. Nice to see him back and showing he has potential

needs to get credit. Gates was no great shakes at Nebraska
