He looked really, really good out there last night...
M.S. : 8/17/2019 7:07 am : link

...and I'm not sure that fumble of his from under Center was entirely his fault.

I don't know how this can happen, but the snap did not come straight back but rather looked like it was hiked to the far left grazing Jones' fingers. He still has to secure the ball, but it looked like a funky snap.

Agreed, it was hiked to the far left, but that's still the QB's responsibility isn't it?

Yes

ball control issues aside (welcome to the NFL rook) he still is putting the ball where it needs to be. That first or 2nd pass to Fowler had good zip on it.
two thoughts jumped out
Giantsfan79 : 8/17/2019 8:15 am : link
1. it was impressive the TD drive was his last. Seems like he was able to properly shake off the two fumbles. I've seen younger QBs get timid and go for safe plays after something like that happens because they're playing not to make mistakes instead of making plays.

2. if it doesn't work out at QB, after watching him make the tackle on the second fumble, perhaps they should try him out at safety :)

I concur based on what I said originally:

"He still has to secure the ball, but it looked like a funky snap."
I like the way he looks

seems to be a great prospect.
He looks great!

We haven't seen such routine accuracy on all types of throws since Phil Simms.
I watched the compilation on the Giants site,
Diver_Down : 8/17/2019 8:50 am : link
but it was only the successful highlights. One thing I noticed is that all his successful passing plays are from shotgun. I would like to see him under center dropping back or rolling out. We all saw the mishandling of the snap under center on what would have been a stretch run play. Perhaps, he was too eager to get out from under center to hand off the ball. The fumble isn't a big deal to me as it is a learning opportunity.

But what I would like to see is a drop-back pass or roll-out. Catching the snap from the shotgun and stepping into a first-read throw is nice. But knowing that DJ will have limited opportunities with the 1's once the season starts, I would like to see a bit more degree of difficulty in the passing plays. I like what I see with him, but I want to see a progression in the difficulty.

Even if it was his fault, nothing to see there unless it becomes a trend
And just after I responded above,

I started to watch the OP's link. And the first pass play from under center was when the OL was subbed out and he threw an incomplete. It was short and he had a clean pocket. The coverage was tight. Not a big deal. Can't complete all the passes, but I would like to see more of it.
I’m not concerned one bit about the fumbles
5BowlsSoon : 8/17/2019 8:57 am : link
I’m sure he can learn from those mistakes. I seriously doubt he will fumble snaps like he did and let’s be honest here.....how many times has Eli fumbled a ball when hit from the side or from behind? That will happen, but he can still learn from it. Hey, this is preseason...we are learning.....no one expects perfection already. And don’t forget, the fumble came with a all new OL that came in....the back ups.

What is more important to me is the accuracy of his passes. That has been simply amazing for two games.

Just finished and it confirms that the only pass play from under center was the first play of the second drive that was thrown incomplete. Hopefully, next week we see more of DJ under center not just handing off the ball.

The good and concerning
The good Jones has great touch and has the unique ability to throw a player open
There are not many QBs who can consistently lead the receiver into a completion
His td was a perfect example
T Jones was covered yet D Jones threw the ball in the perfect location and allowed TJ to make a play
What is very exciting is that Jones goes through his reads yet is still able to throw into tight windows

The concerning is
Jones does not throw with consistent velocity
This can be a problem in the future
He does not step threw on some of his throws so the ball comes out weakly
He compensated for this with a very quick release
This will need to be addressed

Two other observations
The Giants have not utilized Jones as a run option
They are setting this up with ball fakes
This will be a significant part of Jones arsenal

Ball security
Jones did not have a job security problem in college and has large hands

The fumble under center isn't a big deal. Just a mishandled snap and perhaps DJ being too eager to get to the point for the hand-off. That is easily correctable.

The strip fumble is a learning opportunity. Not all the pockets will be pretty. He has to feel the rush and secure the ball. A sack is better than the turnover.

It appears they bumped up the complexity from last week. Hopefully they continue the trend.

I hope so. I like what I see.. But I know that once the season starts, DJ's reps with the 1's will be limited. There just aren't enough in season to prep for the coming week's game. Eli will get the reps with the 1's. Game 3 and 4, I want to see Shurmur turn the screw on DJ. Building confidence is one thing, but we have to take the training wheels off.

He hit Cory Lattimer last week, with a perfect 5 step drop, for a long gain. His footwork was exceptional on that play.
You are preaching to the choir on the in season snaps point

Probably Kerry Collins, who was a very accurate QB.

Good point. When he had good protection he could throw as well as anyone.

I'm heading to the gym, but does anyone have a link to last week's all snaps of DJ? I know it was a small sample size.
Daniel Jones has what it takes to be a very good nfl qb. We've been
Ira : 8/17/2019 10:04 am : link
hearing that during training camp. It's good to see it on the field.
