Granted, I’m not even sure Shurmur and Gettleman know yet, but I don’t have a clue as to how this is going to play out. Last week, Perkins looked awful, and last night, he looked like he should have the #2 spot locked up.
#2 or #3 is irrelevant. Barkley is the obvious #1. Number 2 and 3 will sort themselves out on the field. If they keep only 3 not counting Penny, I think Smith may be odd man out
it's a tough call and truthfully none of them are all that exciting Â
Smith looked solid last night and ran tough. Gallman does what he's supposed to but sometimes he looks like he has 0 juice. Perkins probably has the most talent but hasn't played football in 2 years. I'm sure special teams will play a part in the decision, but this is an area where I'd have an ear out on the trade block. Someone like Duke Johnson who could have actually been a threat when spelling Saquon for 5-10 touches would have been a nice add, though I wouldn't be looking to trade anything more than a 6th or 7th rd pick.

My thoughts exactly, I wanted Johnson but with Barkley on the team they don't need to invest an early day 3 pick for a good backup.
For the final spot, Smith plays on all special team units and is a better blocker, so he would get the call.
With that being said, I wouldn’t be shocked if Smith takes Penny’s spot on the roster as the hybrid FB/RB. He played FB at Ohio State and we don’t use enough of a FB in the offense to justify having a true one on the roster. Smith is a better runner than Penny, so I’d like to see him run block for comparison.
Perkins is in contention with Smith for the #3. And Smith has the edge because he's a bigger body, and despite his efforts, Perkins is still light in the pants.
Though it is possible if they want to keep Penny, they may feel Perkins is a better compliment, since Penny can carry a little, and may get touches that would otherwise go to Smith.
Still wish the Giants had a true thumper. While Ryan Nall will never be feature RB, I was surprised by how tough he was on some of his inside runs, and his seemingly natural hands. He moves a lot better than I expected. Didn't look out of place at all as an NFL player in the limited role asked of him.
RE: I agree re Galman, but I think Perkins played his way back into Â
competition for a roster spot. That screen pass execution was a thing of beauty.
Agree as well. I was surprised by how good Perkins looked. He ran with authority and drove defenders back a couple of times. Good for him, as he needed a strong showing. If that's who he really is, I'd be ok with him making the team. I do remember however seeing him look far more tenuous in the past, so not sure who the real guy is at this point.
I didn't get to see much of Smith, but Hilliman looked very good too. Looks like we may have a few Orleans Darkwa's this year.
we will be one of the more run heavy teams in the NFL this year. With Saquon probably only getting in the 250 rush range they'll have plenty of opportunities.
(But I agree Gallman is our #2, and will certainly get poached to be a starter at the end of his rookie contract)
No one will make a large offer to Gallman to be a bell cow RB, unless he shows waaayy more on the field than he has to this point. So far he's the definition of a jag.
type on his next contract more than likely if he stays healthy. He's solid in all 3 phases and can start in a pinch. He is the rare journeyman running back in the NFL.
and Penny doesn’t. It feels like a while since we cut guys who can play in this league but that’s gonna happen this year at a number of positions. WR, Lb, Rb, TE, perhaps DB.
of Hilliman with the starting OL. He probably won't be the #2 but he has an intriguing set of skills
Agree, but he’s currently at the bottom of the depth chart. I think he might be PS material again, unless we get an injury. If Gallman’s foot doesn’t clear up, you might even see Hilliman make the roster.
The one thing Perkins has on the other 2 is he is a better receiver out of the backfield. If they view Gallman as more of a straight ahead power guy, then I think Perkins has the edge because he's different. If they think Gallman can be the pass catching receiver out of the backfield, then they will likely keep Smith of Hillman as a power back. You want to have a complement.
#2 IMO. It looks as though they are even limiting his preseason workload like Barkley. He will be getting a good amount of meaningful touches in the regular season.
I like Perkins, but it's a close race.

I’m not quite sure Gallman is the clear cut #2, I’m not even sure he makes the team. What has he done to earn it over the others?

I think Perkins has a lot to prove after being on IR last year, so I could see Smith making the team.

I also think Gallman is our #2.
We got Saquon.

Last night Perkins flipped an awful week 1 into a very good week 2. Smith also had some nice plays.
No idea how this goes but I believe all three of these guys have a realistic chance to make this team behind Saquon.
Just like a couple of other guys we know...

My bad. Thought I had seen something last week. Maybe someone else
