Alonso Russell "Zo"

Thinblueline : 8/17/2019 10:26 am
I keep watching the play where he ran past 4 players closed like a 15 yard gap and Tackled the player before he got to our 20 yard line.. His bio says he ran a 4.5 40 but he sure and hell looked faster that that last night.

Then the special teams play where he ran down the field knocked the ball out of the returners hands and was crawling trying to get to the ball... Love the effort!!!

He consistantly is beating his coverage, just not getting the ball... Shurmur had acknowledged last week after watching tape Zo consistantly is beating his coverage... Sorry to rant, but the kid impressed me..
And he's tall too, right?
robbieballs2003 : 8/17/2019 10:29 am : link
We could use some height. I know that people are down on our receivers but they seem to all make plays when they have the opportunity to. We may not have the top end talent but I really do like our depth. If we suffer an injury we shouldn't see a drop off like we did with Plax because of how close they are in talent.
Ditto ...
Spider56 : 8/17/2019 10:30 am : link
I’d like to see him get some WR time with 1s or 2s to see what he can do ...good size too.

6' 4"
It looks like we have good depth at wr. So when Tate misses 4 games
Ira : 8/17/2019 10:33 am : link
or another receiver gets hurt, we have good young players who can fill in. That's a plus.
Between that TD saving tackle
Section331 : 8/17/2019 10:34 am : link
and causing the fumble on punt coverage, I think he’s already won himself a spot, but I’d love to see him get more game action. Shurmer raved about him after the Jets game, pointing out how often he was open.

Yes, he is 6'4 and he has chemistry with Daniel Jones in practice. I just don't know if he will make the team. They will likely carry 6 WR's, not counting Tate who is suspended, Shepard, Latimer, Slayton, Fowler, and TJ Jones are locks IMO. That leaves one spot for someone who excels on special teams which will likely be Russell Shepard. Hopefully Russell plays well enough on special teams to supplant Shepard because we all know that the Giants could use size at WR.

There will be some tough decisions to make at WR as Alonzo Russell, Reggie White Jr. and Alex Wesley have all flashed.
Question
Jay on the Island : 8/17/2019 10:35 am : link
Did Darius Slayton play last night or are they still holding him out? I hope he gets a lot of time next game because the offense could use his speed.
Why is TJ Jones a lock?
robbieballs2003 : 8/17/2019 10:36 am : link
He has been solid but I think the main reason he was brought in was for his ability to return and he has been shaky at best.
If he is constantly beating his coverage
Mike in NY : 8/17/2019 10:36 am : link
Why aren't our QB's throwing to him more? I get they want to spread it around but you saw Bennie Fowler and T.J. Jones as favorites whenever they were open. It makes me wonder if either 1) when he beats his coverage he is not where his QB expects him to be or 2) there are issues with his hands that QB's do not trust him.

It is certainly refreshing to know that the giants will have some tough decisions to make in getting the roster down to 53. In previous years we could pretty much sum up the players that would be cut (with a few surprises)

Slayton has to actually get reps to see if he is worth keeping around. I wonder if he gets IR designated to return tag if he is not fully healthy when the season starts. Brittan Golden has also flashed with his return ability and he did have one nice play as a WR yesterday. T.J. Jones I wonder if there is a spot for him if he is not our best returner. He fills a similar role to Fowler, Latimer, and Russell Shepard. Don't get me wrong, he has been by far the most productive WR this preseason between him, Russell, Golden, and the UDFA's, but is he someone you can afford on your 53 man roster?
Slayton seems pretty close. I bet we see him next week

Russell looks good, the Giants need to find a way to keep him.

The last thing we want is for this guy to end up in the division for the next 10 years!
Russell is making someones team if not the Giants.

Special team ace if nothing else.
For me the question is
Jay in Toronto : 8/17/2019 11:17 am : link
How are his hands? He seems to have everything else.

(No thumb jokes, please ;) )

He's 6'4" and blazing fast.
Russell spent the last three years on various practice squads
GeofromNJ : 8/17/2019 11:23 am : link
but he may be ready to play in the NFL. He attended Toledo and may have needed more NFL schooling. He was activated for one Giants game last December. He certainly is fast. Special teams if nothing else.

He has returned to practice so he won't be put on IR unless he suffers a setback. The coaches were high on him during OTA's so I would be absolutely shocked if he doesn't make the roster especially since he is the only real deep threat on the roster.

I can't see Gettleman cutting bait with a 5th round pick this early especially one who has been praised by the coaches for his performance in practice.
Russell would be quite a late-bloomer story.

Interesting quote from a scout in his draft profile: “When a player with his height, weight, speed doesn't get any better from his first year you really have to wonder what is going on. He should have been a 1,000-yard receiver at some point and he never was." Russell struggled to qualify academically, was never a favorite of the staff or the QBs at Toledo, and sort of topped out as the #2 receiver in a run-first Kareem Hunt-centered offense. He turns 27 next month. Now or never.
But but but
Coach Red Beaulieu : 8/17/2019 11:42 am : link
We don't have a good FF WR so ESPN sez we have worst WR corp.
Watching the game last night I couldn’t help but think
Biteymax22 : 8/17/2019 11:44 am : link
The Giants don’t have a true #1 receiver, but have 2 high end #2s and a bunch of guys that are good to very good #3s and #4s. As much as people are talking down our receiving core, the odd man out will wind up on an NFL roster.

Watching that play last night made me realize, he isn’t making it to our practice squad. If he gets cut, someone will pick him up. If that’s how he’s going to approach the game, I’m 100% rooting for him to make the roster. It should also be noted that Reggie White Jr. was standing in the end zone complaining rather than chasing the ball carrier. So Russell clearly leapfrogged his competition on that play just by effort.
Biteymax22: That’s a common mistake for a true rookie like White.
Big Blue Blogger : 8/17/2019 12:04 pm : link
Defender intercepts pass and goes to the ground. Receiver instinctively assumes play is over because he has played under that rule his whole life. He won’t make that mistake again.

So I'm watching the highlights from camp, and I keep seeing a tall guy wearing #84 catching passes, mostly from Daniel Jones. I was like, who is this guy?. I had to look him up. Turns out it's Alonzo Russell, who spent almost all of last year on the Practice Squad. Signed by the Bengals as a UDFA after going undrafted in 2016, he spent a couple of years on their Practice Squad before they released him, then a year on Arizona's Practice Squad before signing with the Giants in 2018.

A journeyman. Nothing special. 27-years old, never caught a pass in an NFL game. Still, 6-4, 206, a 4.54 at the Combine, there are some tools a good coach can work with. By some accounts - and it may be impolitc of me to say this but I'll say it anyway - he's neither the toughest nor the sharpest tool in the shed. Tolbert has said that he's going to have to make his bones on Special Teams, which is understandable. I hope he can. I hope he's one of those "late bloomers," again, justifying the faith the Giants showed in him by keeping him around and giving him another shot.

In all likelihood he'll never be a star, but if he sticks, if he can contribute on Special Teams and make the most of however many pass-catching opportunities come his way, he could carve out his own little niche as a valued role-player. Which would be nice.

HomerJones45 : 8/17/2019 12:59 pm : link
if he is supposedly getting open and the qb's aren't throwing to him, either he's not where he is supposed to be or he can't catch.

He can at least run which is more than can be said for the rest of the offense outside of Barkley

He’s making the team. Tate is missing 4 games. Jones can play all wr positions shows the ability to get open and yac. He’s been a good player just one that could not remain healthy.
Why do have so many

Big fast strong WRs now when we been putzing around with the likes of Jernigan and Randle for a decade.

Great post except for the fact that Randle is 6'2.

I love TJ as a receiver ......not sure Zo can do what he can do. I will be honest though, I don’t know much about him. I guess I need to view some YouTube videos.
