Nearly every play the last 2 years. Dumping to the rb doesnt do much for me. ☹️
So your response is that Jones should have bird-dogged his first receiver, who was covered, and thrown the ball any way?
Didnt say anything about what he should do. Im simply saying Ive seen plenty of dump offs over the last 2 years (and you have too). Interesting play for Casserly to highlight.
He was highlighting it not because he dumped the ball off,
but because he clearly went through his progressions. There is a difference. Eli has been dumping off right away mostly because the protection has been bad and partly because it seems like he is a bit shell shocked.

^This.
I was rewatching DJ's TD pass from the Jets game, and one
thing I noticed was I couldn't help getting the feeling that Eli would have went to the RB that sat down in the middle of the field. Not necessarily a wrong read, but the safe one.
throw for a rookie QB and impressive that he made three reads quickly and good footwork. The end result of the play isn't as pretty as the Latimer throw or the TD, but great to see when one of the only criticisms from last week was 'one-read only.'
I don't recall what down that was, but if it was 1st & 10 that gives a very manageable 2nd & 4. In today's NFL when you only have 2 seconds to get a pass off that's a positive.
is that the unrelentingly brutal posters re the DJ pick at 6 have been temporarily closeted right now, so pro or con, we can have decent conversations..

He scanned through his progressions and found the open man for a gain just before getting knocked on his ass by a DL. HELLO!? You're the problem here not Jones.
after that play it was a good sign from a rookie QB. Last week on the TD he was locked in on the receiver the whole way. NFL safeties and CBs will eat that up. The Jets had neither on the field on that pass. So nice to see yesterday. He's ahead of schedule but still a very green rookie.

An NFL safety isn't going to eat that up that if he is playing the post and lined up inside, although the good ones may be able to recover. The defense can make plays too. "Staring" down receivers hurts when you need to manipulate linebackers/safeties in zone coverage, or the corner in off man jumping a timing route.

Im a problem? Stfu dude. Blow it out your ass.
I said Ive seen enough dump offs the last 2 years from Eli so Jones ability to do so doesnt do much for me. Its not a critique its an observation. Also I said out of all the throws he made last night, that was an odd one for Casserly to highlight.
You really want to get excited about him progressing through 2 reads and dumping it off in a preseason game vs non-starters have at it. Id rather see him start over Eli cause hes the future - but like I said dumping it to a rb does nothing for me. Id guess if it was 3rd and 10 and we got 4 yards you wouldnt be so excited either.
Preseason is about players being able to show they can play
That's all you're looking for. Take "well it wasn't against starters" out of it. What you're looking for is signs that Jones can do what he's asked to do. It doesn't matter that he made a throw against a backup. What matters is the process of Jones taking a drop back, making his read, and executing the the throw well or not.
The fact that he seems to be able to make accurate throws and place the ball well is what matters. Whether he can do it against #1s will come later, but quick reads and accurate throws are a positive sign.

Its important because it shows maturity and learning. There is more to be a QB than just looking like you won a punt, pass, and kick competition. Theres reading defenses, finding the optimal play and, yeah dumping off is a significant part of that. Its a huge step for a rookie qb. Thats why its worthy of focus.

Yea. I get it. That makes sense.
Chalk me up as a frustrated fan tired of seeing us settle for those dump downs all the time. I realize sometimes its the only play. I understand that. It just seems we settle for it when we dont have to.
Im excited about Jones for sure. Plenty of good throws last night.

Just wait until he throws his first pick, or only completes 60% of his passes. All hell will break loose.
As Shurmur said, keep checking those boxes.
Its mostly the people who dont know the ins and outs of football who find fault and ridicule.
Sometimes that's the only option.
So your response is that Jones should have bird-dogged his first receiver, who was covered, and thrown the ball any way?

Lack of football acumen, does nothing for me, as well.

And also Bill Belichick.

And we signed Vereen to a big contract of course. A "possession 3rd down RB".
