As a beat reporter, your job is to find stories. If there's a possible story angle, you ask about it. A media-savvy coach/player/executive understands that and knows when to shut down a line of questioning with a clear answer that says "Nothing there, sorry," as Shurmur did with "We're not in a bind."
And a savvy beat reporter knows that sometimes they're lying and keeps asking questions.

I thought a guy who has played well, and obviously was hurt a year ago, is Nick Gates. That’s one guy that has done a nice job. We have Evan Brown who has played in there and done a good job.
