Kyle Lauletta - 11-15, 73%, 2 TDs, 0 INT, 138 QBR, 0 Fumbles

since1925 : 8/17/2019 11:03 pm
Eli Manning 5-5, 100%, 1 TD, 0 INT, 143 QBR.

Just saying. On the throws where Jones primary receiver was covered, he hit a check down, lost a fumble and threw a ball n the dirt.

It's fun to get excited in training camp. I root for everyone in blue. I wish young Daniel every success. But geez Louise.

From the End Zone.

If Jones was his primary target he did a masterful job of looking off the safety first.
Why are you so hung up on him making throws to his primary read
Zeke's Alibi : 8/17/2019 11:10 pm : link
like it is a bad thing? Shumur's offense is made to be like that and DJ is correctly diagnosing defenses pre-snap so he can go to his primary read.
I wouldn't get hung up on the stat lines

Right now, there's a very small sample size to go by, but it's positive. In very limited playing time his mechanics look good, which is reassuring.

Definitely. Just fucking around with the OP alittle bit. Important stuff right now is accuracy, arm strength, mechanics, etc. All of which look very good right now.
So 'since1925', you want Tanney released and Lauletta

100%.

And on a separate note, why do some Giants fans (not you - more about the thread starter and his ilk) seem to get pissed/jealous/whatever you want to call it when other fans get excited about the potential future Giants QB actually possibly being very good. Is excitement allowed? We all love Eli but he’s not going to be here forever, and wouldn’t it be nice to maybe have a transition from one franchise QB to another. Obviously it’s early and we all need to see Jones in the regular season but early signs are very encouraging, and god forbid fans are happy about that.

The TD pass by Jones was a first read, not sure why he said it wasn't. It is pretty obvious he recognizes man free, quick look right just to make sure the safety doesn't cheat over the top.
TJ Jones TD was 2nd read

And he threw him open. He's made progression throws. The bullets haven't really started flying yet, he's had great protection facing vanilla defenses...he's still crushing it. It's okay to get excited while keeping everything in perspective. Just go with it.

QB-friendly offense. He was credited with that in Minny, but has gotten little appreciation so far as our HC. I’m hoping that the team plays so well that both he and DG are lauded after this season.
Or it wasn't
AcesUp : 8/17/2019 11:46 pm : link
He still had the wherewithal to look off the safety on that throw. There was a checkdown to Smith where he went through his progressions. The coaches are keeping it simple with the playcalling to build him up but it's not like he's been lost when his first read hasn't been there.
Can’t we all just get along?
Big Blue Blogger : 8/17/2019 11:52 pm : link
The offense looks promising so far, without its best player. In good hands for the present (Manning) and the future (Jones, with Lauletta as a possible long-term backup and/or trade bait). We can have our favorites, but the bottom line is that QB looks like a strength at the moment.
It's more than the stats,
darren in pdx : 8/17/2019 11:52 pm : link
it's the fact his accuracy and placement has been fantastic, and he's making good reads and tough throws. There hasn't been too much to be positive about Giants-wise for a long time so I'll enjoy it while it lasts and hope it's a sign of things to come.

If these were regular season games, I'd say that's absolutely a part of the success. I'm not sure how much that applies in preseason, where there's minimal gameplanning on both sides of the ball.

It was the 2nd read. He looks down the seam for #1 but its covered. He then realizes this means TJ has man-to-man and throws it to him perfectly. Baldinger points this out.

right away. My mistake, he read it so fast I thought it was a token look to shake the safety, which I was trying to figure out because he is never getting there unless he cheats hard.
He looks right then throws left
AcesUp : 8/18/2019 12:29 am : link
The throw was perfect and whether he looked off the safety or went to the 2nd read, both are positives for Jones and Giants fans.

His fantastic showing, throwing the ball thus far, regardless of who he's throwing too, is leaps and bounds better then what Manning showed, during his rookie year.

We complained about the start of Eli's rookie training camp, We dissected his fluttering throws, balls that sailed over recievers heads, and throwing off his back foot. And that's from what I can just remember off the top of my head.

I get it's just preseason, but Jones can't be denied, and any true NY Giant fan, can 'NOT' be excited for this kid.
Mr 1925....
sxdxca : 8/18/2019 12:52 am : link
Your logic here is in error, you may not realize it but your not comparing apples to apples. Your comparing Lauletta's second year preseason stats, to Jones's rookie year.

Here is what Apples to Apples really looks like...

Kyle Lauletta 2018 rookie preseason stats

17/35 47% 194 yards 1 Td 2 Int 58 QB Rating

Now Lets compare Jones rookie preseason

16/19 84% 228 Yards 2 TD 0 Int 148 QB Rating

It's not even close, and Lauletta was doing it against 3rd and 4th stringers his rookie year. Jones' numbers are far superior in just two games.

Just sayin

It might be that some of you (maybe not you but probably you) are delusional and confuse "concern" or "non-belief" into "being pissed" or "being miserable?"

Who told you you can't be excited or who got pissed that you were excited? Things only get bad primarily from the posters who are positive and insult those who are negative or mis-represent what the negative posters have said previously.

For me-- I didn't like the Jones pick. I love what he's shown though from the 2 preseason games - yet posters that are complete homers say posters like me root for the team to lose cuz we'd rather be right on here than watch the GMen win. Do you understand how nuts that is? Further, there are posters on here that make up stuff that I said because I'm negative.

I still don't understand why some of you that are positive posters get so twisted for those of us that are negative. Instead of focusing on the individual poster why not focus on just accepting that most on here are like you that are positive and there will be some negative counters. But the majority on here is positive so why get so twisted over fewer negative posts?

IMO its because you don't want to hear negative at all so you exaggerate or mis-represent the negative poster. Keep on believing that all of the negative posters "want the GMen to lose" and "are miserable" and "get mad when positive posters are excited." It's your own make-believe world though.

Never felt winning in preseason was meaningful, but have always believed and continue to do so, that performance does matter.

I ve seen too often where poor play in preseason translated to the regular season

I think he could make an excellent backup to Jones. Similiar style. No doubt doesn't have the arm but he's very mobile and could be a good future backup.

DavidinBMNY : 8/18/2019 8:50 am : link
If we're discussing the merits of who should be QB3, then we've had a huge jump in roster talent. This is the first time we have a legitimate number 2 QB since David Carr.

There is merit to the idea of keeping the younger player to develop as a backup for Jones. And it's likely with QB injuries around the league if Lauletta was released he would wind up on another 53 roster.

Let's temper expectations though. We tend to look through rose colored glasses.

Eli and DJ are 1-2 this year.

But assuming this is Eli’s last year, the winner of the third string battle would be primary backup next year

Tanney is probably better now but I go with Lauretta. If DJ is starter next year, Giants will probably sign a vet backup with NFL track record. So Tanney really just does not fit

Yes all decisions should be based on a rookie QB, who was basically overlooked all last season in practice, and 5 throws in a mop up roll. Because, rookies never get better. That game may have been Shurmur showing Lauletta that he was not working hard enough - a wake up call. If so, it appears to have worked. He looks much improved this preseason.

Now, comparing a 4th round why not pick vs the #6 pick in the draft is also silly. Jones is clearly the future starter and Lauletta can be the backup. Let's hope he has a great preseason and either beats out Tanney or gets traded to a team in need. More better players showing improvement never hurt any team in any sport.

PatersonPlank : 8/18/2019 3:18 pm : link
The only way this matters is if Eli gets hurt and DJ plays. In that scenario you want a veteran QB ti back him up, that would be Tanney. I don't see what Lauletta brings to the party. He's not the QB of the future, that's Jones, and he's not an experienced veteran, that's Tanney. Next year if Eli is gone, its Jones plus and experienced vet (again Tanney).
