Would you start Connelly over Ogletree

CMicks3110 : 8/18/2019 11:27 am
I know Connelly had a relatively quiet night on Friday, but he looks like a player. Quick to diagnose, plays with reckless abandon, smart, physical. I really don't know what Ogletree really does that well? He seems like a JAG to me. Outside of the Bear game last year, I can't remember him making any impact whatsoever.

Thoughts?
Not to sound arrogant, but I can't see how Trouba doesn't re-sign here
Anakim : 8/18/2019 11:28 am : link
But the other ILB spot is up for grabs. Connelly vs. Tae Davis. Goodson seems to be on the outs.
Not yet

Ogletree is a JAG, but also captain of the defense and the signal caller. It’s a reach to assume Connelly is ready to take over that role from game 1.
I may want to wait more than

2 partial preseason games before jettisoning Ogletree.

That would be impressive for Trouba to play for the Rangers and the Giants.
I don’t have high aspirations for the season, so, I would say yes.

Get the young guys as much experience as possible.

Let's start with
Canton : 8/18/2019 11:44 am : link
He had 5 interceptions.
Ogletree
PEEJ : 8/18/2019 11:45 am : link
has a target on his back (salary). This is his last season with the Giants. He'll start as long as he's healthy. Davis/Connelly is a toss-up
Does not matter what anyone except the coaches think!

Ogletree was a target here but he’s played a lot
LauderdaleMatty : 8/18/2019 11:57 am : link
Better than a lot of the other JAGs we’ve been plugging in over the years. If Lawrence can be the guy we think he can, Hill takes another step and the back 7 are better Ogletree’s warts will be a lot less of an issue. He’s a smart player and a vet. Next year is the year he’s going to be at risk IMO
Not this year
TMS : 8/18/2019 11:59 am : link
unless injury or complete break down by Ogletree while we are still in contention. We have plenty of cap for next year and the draft where this can be addressed next year. Should beBettcher call and like what I see from his defense so far.
I'd start Ogletree and Davis week 1, but as the season progresses
Ira : 8/18/2019 12:01 pm : link
and Connelly learns the system and improves his play, I'd give him the chance to replace him.

Agree and I think Connelly may turn out to be a good one. I'd slow down on replacing Ogletree as a starter just yet.
I like Connelly, ALOT, but I think if it happens it'll be a Sean Lee/
Ben in Tampa : 8/18/2019 12:20 pm : link
Vander Esch-type situation.

Ogletree gets dinged, Connelly comes in a Wally Pips him.

Otherwise, Ogletree has some value and intangibles you don't necessarily trust a rookie mid-round pick to have when real bullets are flying.

Connelly looks like he could be a gamer, lets hope that plays out.
From Day 1 probably not
ajr2456 : 8/18/2019 12:30 pm : link
I don't think Ogletree is good but I don't think Connelly is ready for the responsibility of being the captain of the defense. Unless they want to give someone else the responsibility of adjusting the defense.
Connelly is good at diagnosing the play,
BocaGene : 8/18/2019 12:38 pm : link
but, to me, he seems to miss a lot tackles. Gets there, but, doesn't finish. I do think he will improve as he adjusts to NFL speed.
I would be shocked if coaches feel Connelly is at this level yet
Jimmy Googs : 8/18/2019 12:51 pm : link
Not that Ogletree is irreplaceable but he certainly doesn't suck.

Should be plenty of snaps to go around to all the linebackers, and its up to Connelly to show, as the season goes on, that he deserves to be on the field more.

Tackling will be Connelly's issue.
No Where Man : 8/18/2019 12:57 pm : link
However, he will disrupt a lot of plays.
Connolly misses tackles?
RobCarpenter : 8/18/2019 2:04 pm : link
That wasn’t true against the Jets, and was disruptive vs the Bears.

Sometimes I’m not sure if I’m watching the same game as some of you.

point is less about Connelly and more about how average Ogletree is. Does he do anything well?

Ogletree is a fantastic athlete, and will make a number of really impressive plays per year, but he's not a special player down to down.

He's very often trailing his man in coverage and a step late. My guess is he often misdiagnoses plays and assignments.

Landon Collins alluded to the linebackers making a lot of mistakes in coverage and Collins having to bail them out, then getting the flack from the media for losing his man.

We'll see this year if Peppers kind of suffers the same thing.
I'd play both Ogletree and Connelly
PatersonPlank : 8/18/2019 2:16 pm : link
we need two ILB, and I like them both better than the alternatives
Hope Connelly does well
mpinmaine : 8/18/2019 3:23 pm : link
He looked good in spots vs Jets.
..But he did miss at least one tackle in that game, maybe two.
That was a knock on him soon after we drafted him, Tackling. Let's hope he improves that cus he has instinct and other talents seemingly.
As far as Ogletrees
XBRONX : 8/18/2019 3:35 pm : link
ints. Stevie Brown had 8 one year. Tell me how good he was?
Ogletree

How much cap to we save if we cut him?
Didnt he do a good job

I think finishing

I guess you weren't arrogant after all...
It would be nice if people read the depth chart
Dave on the UWS : 8/18/2019 6:58 pm : link
There are two inside positions ILB and $ backer. Tae Davis is the starter at $ backer. Ogletree at ILB, with Connelly behind him. To start, Connelly would have to supplant Ogletree, not Davis. They play different positions.
Connelly was one of the Duds in game 2 review

start Connelly? Ogletree is a JAG?
guineaT : 8/18/2019 7:15 pm : link
LOL. It’s jumping the gun on the Connelly front. Let’s not forget we need two ILB’s in many of these defensive sets.

The ogletree JAG comment is just dumb. He’s a quality starting defender, definitely above average.
