The reason given last year for keeping Tanney was that we wanted a vet backup for Eli. Well, this year, its quite obvious that Jones will be backing up Eli. So this year, what is the purpose of continuing to hang on to Tanney? Seems to me it would make sense to hang on to Lauletta if we are gonna keep a QB3, or just keep 2 qbs and get Lauletta on the PS.

Tanney will most likely be kept to help DJ continue to learn. Lauletta probably goes to the PS.

Obviously that could change and he just didn't want to say he'd take a teammates number. I think it was from a Q&A in The Athletic that he basically said he's sticking with 8.

has more to do with next year than this year. If Eli is gone next year, who do you want as a back up? It may be better to keep Tanney since they may want the backup to be a more experienced vet.

Jones has been the first QB in after Eli in both preseason games. How on earth are you suggesting that Tanney is ahead of him to the point he has to pass him? And please don’t tell me you’re basing this on the first depth chart that came out before camp even began

There’s no way in hell Jones is going to be #3 to start the season. Secondly, Shurmur has said he likes having three QBs on the roster for meetings. Also, whoever is 3rd this year is being held on to most likely be the backup next season. They will have invested two offseasons into Tanney and Lauletta, better to have a backup you’ve fully evaluated and knows the offense than bringing in someone new to start from scratch.

Tanney/Lauletta battle is very close. There are arguments for and against both. But if Lauletta is cut, I'd be surprised if he clears waivers so we can put him on the PS. My guess is that he's claimed. We'd be better off trying to trade him. We won't get a fourth, but somebody might at least give a seventh, if only to avoid having him claimed by another team with a higher waiver claim.

No way Jones is not #2 and dressing come week one.

It’s not clear to me either one will clear waivers. Especially Lauletta.

I’d keep 3 QBs with Lauletta as the #3 so that he can be the backup to Jones next year.

Agree, unless player #54 (AKA the guy who would be cut to keep the 3rd QB) is a guy that wouldn't make the PS either. From what I've seen from Lauletta so far and Tanney - both are replaceable. Normally player #54 is out of the league before they see NFL game action, but who knows.

Different team different #. plus I wouldn't be surprised if someone whispered in his ear the last Duke QB that wore #17 for the Giants and suggested he stay away from it.

If we kept 3 QBs throughout Eli's career, we wouldn't have developed Cruz.

May have some upside. Tanney? I don't think anyone would claim him. Keep Lauletta.

and Put Lauletta on the PS. Tanney or Lauletta are not going to be #2. If Eli goes down Jones is the guy no matter what. Either Tanney or Lauletta would be available if a 3rd QB is needed and if we get to that point the season is lost anyway.

For the 1st time on a long time we have some guys in the 50-55 player range that other teams may want and getting a 7th rounder may be worth hanging on to these guys instead of a 3rd QB. The QBs are a dime a dozen, you can pick a guy up and get the same production as either of them.

I don't think 3 QBs is needed at this point. You didnt draft DJ to be a developmental guy, you drafted him to be the guy. Once this team is out of contention or if Eli goes down this is DJs team. He will have growing pains but you have to play him.

and Tanney is odd man out. There is no upside with Tanney, he is moe limited physically than Jones and Lauletta, and it's not like he has starting experience to fall back on.

I'd have Jones at #2, with Lauletta on the 53 undressed.

I agree unless the Giants feel Lauletta is a suitable backup to Jones for the rest of his rookie contract. If they don't feel confident that Lauletta is a solid #2 QB then I don't see the point carrying him on the roster. Again I think that if Tanney is cut he will remain unsigned. If the Giants need to add him later in the year then he should be available.

And I hope we only keep 2 QBs on our 53. Put one of them on the PS
