With all the usual caveats that it's 2 preseason games, etc. I am overjoyed with Jones, however. If he shows development this year it will make another non-competitive season easier to swallow.
Is he a critical enough cog in ST play that he is safe? Because measured as WR alone, there are a roster full of guys ahead of him. Haven't even seen what/if Slayton can do.

I think the staff likes the dependability he brings
albeit seems the WR corps is awash in dependability if nothing else. On the Lattimer catch from Jones along the far sideline (just before the fumbled snap) I thought he did a good job of masking his anticipation of when the ball was coming close to catching range, to delay the DB's head turn. But maybe the DB didn't have a shot anyway.
I'm surprised that you think Latimer will get 65+ receptions this season. He has looked very good this preseason but I am always concerned when veteran WR's who haven't done much in their careers to date look great in the preseason. Are they just late bloomers or are they just feasting on younger less talented DB's?
As Sy mentioned TJ Jones appears to be a great find by the FO and he has looked very good since signing. I feel much better about the receiving corps than I did a month ago. Fowler, Jones, and Latimer all bring something different to the table.
Now let's hope that Slayton gets plenty of time over the final two preseason game and becomes a dependable deep threat for the offense.
they keep Lauletta. I think he is showing enough and would hate to waste the draft pick.
Slayton is absolutely making the team unless he drops every pass thrown to him the next two weeks.
With the concussion news about Tate, went back and watched him on every play to see if I could see what happened. Couldn't tell for sure, although there was one play on the first series of downs where he blocked and put his head down to the turf funny before he got up.
Tate played four series; had the one catch for five yards from Eli and the one underthrow incomplete to the sideline from Jones. Didn't seem as though anything was affecting him physically, but he wasn't exactly jumping off the screen as someone you'd want to pay a lot of money when you already have a slot receiver.
I thought the 3rd QB race got a bit tighter this week. I thought Tanney looked sharper last week. But he was shakier this week.
Tanney played surprisingly well against the Jets. Well enough where I was actually excited to see how the competition with Lauletta would play out. He wasn't as good against the Bears but hopefully they both finish strong. At the moment I would still keep Lauletta over Tanney as I still believe that no team would sign Tanney if he were released.
I think Lauletta has played well enough where another team would claim him on waivers to serve as their #3 QB if the Giants attempted to stash him on the practice squad. That's assuming he continues to play well over the final two preseason games.
You’re the best. I do however completely disagree with you about Barkley needing snaps. I don’t think getting 6 or 7 snaps is going to be the difference of him coming in ready to go and needing a week or two to “shake off the rust”. By all accounts, he looks anything but rusty in camp. He’s a RB, they need to limit the amount of abuse he takes any chance they can. IMO, the risk far outweighs the reward as far as getting him a few touches in a meaningless game. He is a pros pro. He will be ready to roll week 1. I wouldn’t let him anywhere near the field these next two weeks.
If I was just watching last night, I would take Lauletta, then there is the fact that he is just in his second year and may have both value and upside.
I think it will be Manning Jones Lauletta, then Jones Lauletta next year.
Allen is faster and Josh is much taller, heavier, and longer than Ryan Connelly. Allen is 6-5-262 and he ran a 4.63 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. Josh has very long arms. Connelly is 6-2-242 and he ran a 4.66 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. Ryan has short arms. Allen's size-speed ratio is far superior to Connelly's.
IMO, didn't play well against the Bears. Threw a terrible pick on 1st and goal from the one and also threw a deep pass down the middle against triple coverage that should have easily been picked. I'd stick with Lauletta. He MIGHT get better with more experience. Tanney has been around and I don't see the reason to keep the older quarterback on THIS team.
...very much appreciate your thoughtful, informative write-up. A really good read, especially when the Giants are playing well.
One very small quibble regarding Lorenzo Carter, who received one of your STUDS award.
Check out the video at the 41 second mark.
The Bears had Third & One and ran wide to the right. Carter got blown up by a double team but you can see that it is really just one Bears player, rookie TE Dax Raymond (#46) who kicks his ass all the way down the field. Maybe Carter is still being blocked as I write this.
In any event, this is the one thing that scares me about Carter. Can he set the edge, hold his ground, turn a run back to the inside?

Absolutely right, MS. I do have a game-note on Carter failing to seal the outside on that run. He doesn't have great contact presence right now, as the stoutness isn't there and he also plays high.
If the Giants had to play one of these two in 2019, Tanney is the better option.
That being said, who is the better option beyond 2019? My guess is Lauletta.
If Jones is the #2, I'm not sure keeping Tanney (the 2019 version of Jeff Rutledge) makes much sense.
Neither one of these guys is going to be a factor this year. If its at all close, they should go with Lauletta and hope he develops. Guys like Tanney are a dime a dozen, although usually a bit more expensive and we only have on a two year contract. Decent chance Laulleta can become a comp pick as well with how much QBs make if he shows any potential. Weird worrying about a backup QB considering its almost a certainty they'll play at some point without the Ironman under center.

I think you guys are overlooking the intangibles that aren't seen on the field. Tanney has been praised by Shurmur for what he brings to the QB room. We have seen DJ in action, but there is more than catching a snap in the shotgun and tossing to the first read. While Eli will help answer questions, his main focus will be preparing for the weekly opponent and knowing the game plan. Tanney is a viable back-up, but he also can assist DJ in how to breakdown opponent's film. I think KL is odd man out.
Not a big deal, but its a strike against him and I think the backups are at least partially dependent on the desire for the best support cast for DJ as possible.

Yes of course. I can't see those things. To me Lauletta makes more sense but I am not going to say I know more than the coaches...

This off-season DG had said that it is hard to count on someone who can't be on time. Remember the precursor to the arrest was that he was late earlier in the week. 2x in the same week, Kyle did his best speedracer impersonation.

Yes. Over the course of the spring and camp, DJ has been asked at least three times for print consumption how he has found, has been benefitting from Eli's mentoring: in each case, Jones has named Tanney first and foremost, then the room, then, almost in passing, Eli
I think Tanney to the practice squad has been the plan all along. Â
Lauletta will stay or go but not to the practice squad.
Tanney has made it to the practice squad throughout his career because the Coaches see him as a valuable piece of the team. If he performs well the Giants will do him a favor by releasing him so he can be picked up as a #3 QB. And if he isn’t picked up, the Giants will welcome him to the practice squad where he can manage the scout team and mentor Jones. Tanney will be a coach somewhere when he retires.
with either Tanney or Lauletta. Seems to me, it makes no difference which one is released or moved to the practice sqaud. Obviously some Giants fans hope that Lauletta could be developed and then traded for value, but I would be surprised (and pleasantly so) if that were to happen. Gettleman apparently sees something of value in Lauletta. If he's right, then I'm wrong and kudos to our general manager.

The WR corp is awash in has beens, never wusses and suck and apparently there is nothing coming out of the draft or free agency or we would not be playing cast off vets.
Please with Latimer; he's a 5 year vet who has caught 46 passes in his career. He is no good and the fact that he is getting extensive playing time in preseason games is an indictment of the rookies in camp.
I have to agree with the pessimistic view on Latimer Â
He's a guy that's always had the really intriguing physical tools, but he's never caught more than 19 passes in a season. All that despite being a relatively high draft pick (2nd round) that Denver wanted to get more involved. Projecting 60+ catches...I mean I get that we've got to throw it to somebody, but that might be a stretch.
I have no problem giving Barkley a few touches and I am
sure he is chomping at the bit to get out there .
Carter will improve and learn to set the edge better .
he has some great tools to work with . Guys like Banks
and Van Pelt were all pro at setting the edge he is not quite there yet . Jake Ceresna was very disruptive late in the game
Lattimer picked up where he left off last season hope he has
a healthy year .
will be a tough one. Both are well regarded as back up possibilities and QB discussion room positives. Seems Lauletta has turned the corner on the field lately and Tanney is still Tanney. The decision making group were very high on Lauletta when he was drafted for his potential. He fell back after that but think he is coming back now in the opinions of those that matter. we will see.
with the 1st team before the season starts? Wouldn't it beneficial to get guys fighting for roster spots more reps over a guy who will miss the first month of the season?

Golden Tate is in the concussion protocol. I don't know if he has tested out of it.

Scratch that. Just read through the Monday practice tweets and Golden is taking part. So it must not have been too bad of a concussion.

0 touches for Barkley, RB wear and tear is a thing. Plus he did fine missing almost all of preseason and Aug training.

I'm buying Latimer. As long as he's healthy. I dont think hes a #cathes guy, moere a big play receiver 17 ypc guy. Love the fact we finally have WRs that can break arm tackles and win contested catches, unlike the lightweights Reese liked to collect for years.
I am hoping and a-praying that the OL really is as good as they looked.
Lattimer and Shepard 1 and 2...
I think Shepard and Latimer are definitely ahead of him.
Fowler / R Shepard / Jones fight for the other snaps.
Don't forget we will see plenty of Engram split out as well
I think the staff likes the dependability he brings

Well, speed in shorts at the combine does not equal speed on the field. But I hope you're right.
I had to check that too... it's accurate. I think because the one returner ran backwards.
