Easily noticeable during the preseason is the drop off from starting caliber offensive lineman to the second and third units. Reliable OL play is scarce throughout the league

Thought of this when rewatching the #Giants 2s/3s today... looking at guys whose 1-2 traits hopefully can help secure a floor, and honestly think youth/intangibles can give you the chance at a ceiling but its baby steps. With that said for units like NYG their depth in '19& gt;'18

Really liked this throw from Jones:

2x2 Shallow Cross Variation (very close to Chip Kelly Mesh, Shurmur favorite on 3rd-Medium)
CHI runs a weakside Creeper (rush 4) w/ weakside safety spin (C3 Match variation)

RT'ing the below, seeing the ? of who will replace the production of OBJ? Beckham is a top 2/3 WR in the NFL, quite simply the loss of talent to the WR group puts a premium on QB placement, particularly in an O geared to distribute on time to playmakers in space

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)
8/18/19, 12:02 PM
To be fair, a big reason for the RAC was the perfect/"lucky" play call, the Shallow outflanks the rotation/rush scheme. BUT, RAC is most often a function of the QB providing proper placement. Shurmur is gonna run a lot of CK Mesh. This is Jones' WheelHouse

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)
8/18/19, 6:38 PM
So do not see it as any skill player replacing OBJ bc its quite frankly very difficult. Rather the O has to excel in a balanced way (not run/pass ratio), but even distribution of targets w/one (SB) who will absolutely generate explosives (runs& gt;15 yards, passes& gt;18))

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)
8/18/19, 7:00 PM
Im not a FF but would think of it like this :
Tate, Fowler, Conrad: "win early" guys in Quick Game
Shep: Win at top of route and in traffic
CL, TJ: Contested Catch guys
EE, Barkley: guys you wanna create space for as primary, use motion, get them moving BEFORE D can contact

Slayton?

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)
8/18/19, 7:17 PM
Kind of in the take the top off the coverage vertical threat. That's another bucket where Jones and Latimer live too

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)
8/18/19, 7:23 PM
Yeah slaytons tough I know hes had a good camp but hes gotta win consistently vs press coverage ot will have s limited ceiling. He needs reps for that and just isnt getting them now

Tate WR1?

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)
8/18/19, 11:20 PM
So, its a good ? but depends on what hes being asked to do. Are the routes short where he has to win early vs press or off man, with opportunity for RAC? then I think hes near the top of the WR stack. Think of PHI game in CHI where hes runnign that Speed Out in OT

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)
8/18/19, 11:22 PM
But if you are asking him to win downfield with long vertical stems where he has to consistently beat guys with speed or at the top of routes, or even making stabs with a good catch radius... then no he would be at the bottom part of the WR stack

OL

Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21)
8/18/19, 3:25 PM
Some juggling with the second-team OL (L-R): Slade, Gates, Pulley, Salako, Wheeler. Wheeler back with the 2s, Slade moving to left side, Gates back inside bumping Evan Brown to third-team C

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)
8/18/19, 3:29 PM
This makes sense. Gates needs reps on the inside developing his anchor. Brown struggled the most in the first 2 PS games. Wheeler had an ok game last week, but I think the pressure is really on now with the 2s.

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)

Chandler is coming off a back injury where he missed some time, but already seeing improvement in play strength. Like the & #11015;& #65039; showing good COD (Change of Direction) coming from a breakdown to close space and not let ball carrier's length (6030 vs 5010) play

King FMIA: Kyler Murray, All-In On Arizona; Raiders, All-Out On Antonio Brown?
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/08/19/kyler-murray-cardinals-antonio-brown-raiders-fmia-nfl-peter-king/

Benoit MMQB: Vic Fangio Is Bringing His Hometown Vibes to Denver
Fangio has coached in many different locations over the years, but hes never forgotten his roots in his hometown of Dunmore, Penn. And now that Mike Munchak, from the neighboring Scranton, is also on his coaching staff, theres an undeniable Northeast Pennsylvania influence around the Denver facilities. Also, veterans explain the magnetic draw to Bill Belichick, Mike Mayock has had it with Antonio Brown, Kyler Murrays clapping problem and we try smelling salts!

One thing? Informationspecific, vital, crucial information that ultimately can help every aspect of an NFL players career.
Stephon Gilmore, who is entering his third season with the Patriots, remembered a game last year where Belichick came up to him before kickoff and pulled him aside.
He said, When the ball is traveling in this certain direction, the wind is blowing hard enough where you should probably trail the receiver just a little bit because the ball isnt going that deep.
I mean, nobody looks at those kinds of things, Gilmore told me. Its the little things like that. You listen to him.
(Both of Gilmores interceptions were in outdoor stadiums last year, for what its worth).
Kyle Van Noy, a former Lions second-round pick who came to New England via trade in 2017, told me that the information Belichick shares is just part of being on the team. There is a truth to the whole tiredPatriot Wayplatitude, even if it means different things to different people. Van Noy brought up theirTeam of Teamsperiods, where Belichick grouped together players from different sides of the ball for bonding activities. Even if the collective Patriot vibe from the outside is that of a pack of mercenaries, there is a pointed attempt at creating a singular heartbeat.
But yes, the direct, individually personalized, in-the-moment scouting reports you get from the greatest head coach in NFL history help with the charm.
Ive had multiple times where, just because I wear the [on-field microphone] I mean, I cant say too much because I still use most of [the pieces of information] against the teams we regularly play, Van Noy said by phone during the Patriots joint practices in Nashville. But yeah, he has a couple, man. Its impressive. Ill keep those forever. Its important to really listen, what he says, it holds true.

1. GIANTS 32, BEARS 14: EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. The allure of Daniel Jones was powerful enough to sucker me into driving to MetLife Stadium during peak drive-time traffic in New Jersey (read: gridlock) on one of the last summer weekends of 2019. For those reading this who are from a different part of the country, driving in New Jersey on a summer Friday afternoon amid throngs of people going to the Jersey Shore is like dragging your sedan through a hellscape of angry, child-stuffed sport utility vehicles and raised pickup trucks tattooed with wild bumper sticker ideology on everything from pets to churches to automatic weapons. Even the slightest in-car movement elicits a horn blasting from three cars behind.
It was worth it, if only to see how predictably Jones is now deified by a fan base that nearly swallowed itself whole on draft night at the idea of picking him. Jones was solid on Friday, going 11-of-14 for 161 yards and a touchdown (138.4 rating). He threw two picture-perfect passes (Danny Dimes is now a thing on Twitter), including the touchdown to T.J. Jones. He also fumbled one snap and got another ball swatted out of his arm by James Vaughters. It was a departure from a flawless debut, and well get to that in a moment. But first, a quick note on Eli Manning.
I clocked Mannings three non-play action throws of the night at 1.53, 2.06 and 1.4 seconds. While there was nothing resembling a Bears first-string defense on the field, we saw the more practical version of a Beckham-less offense at work: play action and bunch heavy, with some role players willing to battle and create legal traffic underneath.
Minus Golden Tate for four weeks, though, Im struggling to see how this is going to prolong Mannings time as the starter, even if he looked sharp. The one thing Manning may have going for him is that the Giants could theoretically win three of their first four gamesCowboys, Bills, Buccaneers, Washingtonwith Saquon Barkley alone.
As for Jones, its nearly impossible to get a read on him against the current level of competition, but its easy to see theres still some work to be done. His trigger isnt as fast as Mannings and hes not playing as talented a defense. At least from my vantage point, Manning (naturally) is processing the game faster and thats still more advantageous in this kind of offense than a nice deep ball. To his credit, Jones dove for the first ball he fumbled, and on the touchdown pass to Jones, he did a nice job of freezing the safety with his eyes before going up top and taking advantage of the single coverage.

At this point, any controversy seems manufactured; the product of the first real whiff of a quarterback controversy this part of New Jersey has seen in more than a decade.

Bruce Kimball G FA-Toronto CFL 1982 NYG 1982 Born 8-19-1959

UMASS HOF: Bruce Kimball

Earned three letters as a member of the UMass football team from 1976-78, and earned first-team all-America honors at guard in both 1977 and 1978. Kimball anchored the UMass line that helped the Minutemen rush for over 3,000 yards in 1978 (setting a school single-season record at the time) en route to the NCAA Division I-AA national championship game. Three different players on that 1978 team rushed for over 5000 yards, including 1,000-yard rusher Dennis Dent. Kimball served as captain in 1978, and earned all-Yankee Conference honors in both 1977 and 1978 when the team won back-to-back conference titles. A member of the 50th Anniversary Yankee Conference team, Kimball also helped UMass to the 1977 NCAA Division II playoffs. Following the conclusion of his UMass career, Kimball was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the seventh round of the 1979 National Football League Draft. He played for two seasons in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts, before moving on to the NFL in 1982. Kimball played for the New York Giants in 1982 and the Washington Redskins in 1983 and 1984. He was part of the Redskins' 1983 NFC championship team, and played in Super Bowl XVIII. A native of Rowley, Mass., he received his degree from UMass in Physical Education in 1979. Kimball now resides in Rye, N.H., and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000.

David Patten WR UDFA-Western Carolina 1997 NYG 1997-1999 8-29-1974

An undrafted free agent from Western Carolina who did not receive a workout from an NFL team after college, Patten spent six months loading coffee bags onto trucks. It was at this moment, Patten claims, that he rededicated himself to his Christian faith.
Soon, Patten impressed the New York Giants after running a 4.27 in the 40-yard dash at a University of South Carolina NFL workout in March 1997. Former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi called Patten a couple of days later and gave him a chance to try out for the team. The Giants eventually signed Patten to a one-year contract.
Still uncertain about his Giants' tenure, Patten slept on his cousin's couch during his rookie season.

Life After Football: The Story of David Patten (2-08-2019)

Pattens early football days were at Lower Richland High School where he played on the same team as Gold Glover and future Red Sox World Series Champion Pokey Reese.
Had Pokey [Reese] not played professional baseball, he would have been a Hall of Fame wide receiver, Patten said. I had seen him make some of the most acrobatic and phenomenal catches, he was making like the Odell Beckham Jr. catches and he would make even more phenomenal catches in baseball.
Patten then attended Western Carolina University. He went undrafted in 1996. After spending one year with the Albany Firebirds arena football team, he waited for his chance in the NFL. Even when there seemed like things were looking bleak, Patten stayed positive.
I can never remember not doubting whether I would make it to the NFL, Patten said. I knew with all of my heart and all of my mind and always believed that I would make it.
More than half a year passed, and still, no one called. Determined for answers, he turned his attention to his faith.
I was always conscientious of the fact that I know that I realized my dream and I knew it was the direct will of God, Patten said. I was doing everything I was supposed to do but because I wasnt committed to Him, I couldnt get a tryout, no one even looked at me and then when I committed my life to Christ, Im working eight months loading coffee beans into an 18-wheeler truck and I dont even have time to work out and I get picked up by the New York Giants.
Due to his slight frame, Patten would suffer injuries throughout his tenure with the Giants turning to creatine to help with the issue. Through the pain and the disadvantages he had, Patten would continue moving and playing through pain knowing that as an undrafted free agent, he could be released at any time without a second thought.
I was not going to not let anything stop me from realizing my dream, Patten said. Although I had several injuries, I never let any of it prevent me from going out there and practicing and playing in the preseason games, and to this day I dont know how I made it through it because I had a herniated disk in my back and my back would give out on me to the point where I couldnt walk and in some kind of way I would suck it up, tough it out and be able to play through the game or through the practice.

In 2007 while playing football, Patten was called to ministry and had no second thoughts that that was what he wanted to do after he was done catching passes.
When I was called to ministry, I really committed myself to study Gods word, Patten said. I didnt want to just preach for the sake of just preaching and studying the script and coming up with great sermons and as God began to reveal his truth to me and I started just think about the various stories, they are all inspiring.
Patten resides in Columbia, South Carolina where he started his own church called Awol Ministries in 2014, also taking up public speaking.

Clyde Powers SS D6-Oklahoma 1974 NYG 1974-1977 8-19-1951

1977 Profile: Clyde Powers

Strong Safety
No. 29
Oklahoma
"The No. 5 draft choice of the Giants in 1974, Powers won himself a spot on the club with fine work during the preseason. He played in all 14 regular season games as a strong safety and special team man and showed versatility and potential. Clyde started at strong safety in seven games and proved to be a fine hitter.
In 1975, he moved into the starting job at strong safety and had himself a big season. Clyde was among the league leaders in tackles, covered extremely well and had three interceptions, including a big one in the win over Buffalo on Monday Night. Last year, he again came up with a solid season's work, playing all 14 games, getting a pass interception and leading the secondary with 108 tackles.
A three-year letterman at Oklahoma, Powers was an All-Big Eight selection in his senior year and was picked to play in both the Senior Bowl and the Blue-Grey postseason games. He had eight interceptions in his collegiate career, including two touchdown returns against Kansas and Clemson.
Clyde Powers was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma, where his father was stationed in the Army, and was a three-sport standout at Lawton High School. He lists fishing and bowling as his favorite hobbies."

-1977 New York Giants Media Guide

NYT Giants' Clyde Powers Misses a Special Friend (3-05-1977)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., March 4In the finished basement of Giants Stadium, where the National Football League's best& #8208;pampered 3& #8208;11 team plays, Clyde Powers was driving golf balls, talking about printing and feeling sorry that he was not working with handicapped children.
The Giants' strong safety, at 25 years old one of the solid young pros in the defensive backfield, also said all the correct things about how last season was a learning experience, how the team would be stronger for it in 1977 and how he could not wait for July and summer camp.
A Grand Canyon With Carpets
Meanwhile, he is content with his offseason job as a sales trainee with Tanagraphies, a New York printing company (everything from business cards to annual reports), and with working out at the Meadowlands stadium, the basement of which is like the Grand Canyon with carpets.
This isn't much good for your football abilities, he said while driving golf halls into a net between exercises with the weights and racquetball games with several other Giants wintering in the area, It's kind of like a rest period. But it does help you loosen up your muscles after you've been working with the weights.

This is the second winter the Oklahoman has spent up North. Last offseason he worked for the Giants' speakers bureau and met the man who introduced him to the man who gave him the printing job.
It's really exciting, Powers said, and has a lot of potential.
But it is not what he studied at the University of Oklahoma, where he majored in special education.

I always felt like I wanted to work with mentally retarded kids, he said. I just fell in love with them. But the last time I was back in Oklahoma to work, after my first season with the Giants [1974], the only opportunity was to work with kids with cerebral palsy. I didn't think I could work with them, that I could help, but we just hit off.
You see the desire in their faces, the enthusiasm they have for life, how they have to work for just the little things in life. Did you ever see them try to swallow food? It's really hard for them. But you can't ever feel sorry for them. They can tell, and they won't respond.

One cerebral palsy youngster still responds to Powers.
His name is Charlie Roberts. he's from Norman, Okla., and we've become very tight, said Powers. I saw him when I went home for Christmas. He writes to me a lot. He's got a special typewriter, or if he's too tired his mother Wiles his dictation.
Powers takes I3& #8208;year& #8208;old Charlie out to shoot pool.
grab the stick when I'm shooting, said Powers, and he thinks he's shooting. He is.
Charlie's seen me a couple of times on TV, and I don't think he's ever seen me beaten. But he teases me a lot.
From Charlie, Powers will take the teasing. Up here, he doesn't.
I haven't had too much ribbingabout last season, he said. Most people I know arc sympathetic. They realize what a tough schedule we had. They also know they better not rib me too much, or they might be in for a fight.

When in 1-High, whether it be Match, Man, or Zone, the range of the FS helps DB's with routes attacking the MOF. Looks like a "Search" route,& the FS's play speed to break and move downhill results in a tackle, but all in all less chances 4 PBU's
